Has anyone else had any difficulty in getting a My Waitrose card. I have been trying, by post, phone and online since November? At that time a friend kindly donated a packet of liquorice allsorts to me, which he had got free with his mY Waitrose card; He didn't like them and I love liquorice. Anyway, he urged me to sign up so I did. But I am still waiting.

My Mil loved her nets they had to be pure white and that took some doing as she smoked like a trooper, she was constantly buying, before she died 8yrs ago she gave a set to a woman across the road and I dont think they have been washed since, she would turn in her grave shock

I think there is a difference in appeance between nets and heavy lace curtains, which can be very decorative.

lancashirelass I am very happy with the Co-op bank in general and my
Co-op bank cards. I don't care at all if it might suggest socialist tendencies. What an obnoxious assitant I wish I had met her, I'd have given her a piece of my mind, it would have made my day!

No need for anyone to suggest socialist tendencies to me - I am happy to be a 'loonie leftie' as those charming right wingers call us. I can cope with snotty shop assistants!

Regarding vertical blinds and poshness. I started looking at them very closely today after the vacuum cleaner "ate" the plastic "chain" from the bottom of the ones at the patio door. They must be about 16 yrs old and look very dingy and dirty. A series of budgies have reached over from the back of the settee, chewed and frayed the edges of some of them.
The others show signs of staining where budgies, flying madly from pelmet to pelmet have pooped in mid flight. In tune with the laws of physics the momentum of the birds flight propels the poops forward and they hit the blinds while the birds land on the pelmet above. However Barnes Wallis got there first with inventing the idea of bouncing bombs. I am just not houseproud thats my trouble!

Spoken like a true socialist! You tell those minimum wage earners how it is.

Forgot wink

I am constantly amazed the way threads on Gransnet get bogged down in discussions about class, what is posh and what is working class etc etc. Who cares.

DH and I come from very different backgrounds and I cannot think of a single occasion in our lives where this has been a matter of comment or query or has affected any aspect of our lives from work through leisure to family.

Surely Gransnetters

Grannyeggs Mon 24-Sep-12 15:51:57

Well said flickety , class seems to be a bit of an obsession with some. I'm a Waitrose woman myself, with Tesco Value tendencies on occasion.i have my My Waitrose card.

Lilygran Mon 24-Sep-12 16:19:02

I go to Tesco (nearer) for a lot of basic stuff you can buy anywhere and the Co-op when I take things to be dry cleaned but they do not have the range of goods that Waitrose has. There is a giant Tesco opened recently not far from us. Instead of having a wider range, they simply have more shelves filled with the same goods. Twenty shelves of Persil, Fairy and other well-known brands of detergent, for example. I much prefer Waitrose.

Ana Mon 24-Sep-12 16:22:12

Isn't Waitrose posh?
There isn't one anywhere near me, so I wouldn't know....

Lilygran Mon 24-Sep-12 16:31:07

The one on Finchley Road near the tube station is definitely posh. I don't think ours can be, because it's up North.

annodomini Mon 24-Sep-12 16:34:42

What's all this about net or lace curtains? Mine are voile and I got them because my front windows are very close to the road and I do not wish potential burglars to view my priceless antiques grin and certainly don't want the neighbours to observe my less than perfect housewifery.

whenim64 Mon 24-Sep-12 16:40:06

My nearest Waitrose is pretentious posh. It's in Wilmslow and whenever I go there (usually get an online delivery from them) there's always some twit asking where the caviar or poulet de Bresse is, in a loud voice. They only do French chickens, not Bresse, as they would know I'm sure. It's just showing off. If they were really posh, they would a) get the staff to shop, b) order online or from the village butcher, or c) buy from Tesco and pass it off as Bresse! grin

Greatnan Mon 24-Sep-12 16:51:38

Nanadogsbody - which post are your two last posts addressing?

Nanadogsbody Mon 24-Sep-12 16:55:15

Ella46 Mon 24-Sep-12 16:59:15

when you are talking about my corner shop and it can't be posh because I'm a regular!! grin

FlicketyB Mon 24-Sep-12 17:04:14

I shop in Waitrose because my local store is compact and in the town centre so i can go to the bank, hairdressers, and visit all the other town centre facilties I may need to access when I visit it. The alternative is a huge out of town supermarket which is time consuming to shop in and as my bank hairdresser etc are in the town centre I then have to visit there as well.

I also support Waitrose, and the Coop because they are both stores where the staff are shareholders in the business and benefit directly from its profits. I would rather pay a bit extra to shop in a store that has some measure of social ownership and will treat its staff with respect than some huge multiple that screws its staff and its customers to maximise profits.

Lilygran Mon 24-Sep-12 17:08:51

Hear, hear FlicketyB

annodomini Mon 24-Sep-12 17:11:32

when, I think you mean that the customers are pretentious rather than the store! I reflect that if I shop in Waitrose - which I do - I am making a tiny contribution to DS's partner's annual bonus; well, that's what I tell myself anyway. wink

janeainsworth Mon 24-Sep-12 17:32:49

Flickety and Grannyeggs
I think it was my fault that the thread became "bogged down in discussions about class" with my assertion, which was meant to be semi-humorous, that I couldn't live without fresh coriander and basil.
As far as I was concerned, all subsequent remarks were intended in the same vein.
Can someone tell me when it all got so deadly serious please?

Nelliemoser Mon 24-Sep-12 17:36:16

Waitrose has pretensions of being posh and its advertising and branding aims itself at the upper end of the market. Like M&S food.

I shop most often at Asda as it was the nearest supermarket when we moved here and there are some other useful shops in the same town. Before we moved it was Sainsbury's.

Greatnan Mon 24-Sep-12 17:46:40

Just because somebody is on the minimum wage doesn't mean you have to put up with their being snotty! In fact, in my experience the snottiest people are those on the highest salaries - like Mitchell!
I wish people wouldn't dictate what other members can post - some of us enjoy thread drift. grin

Nanadogsbody Mon 24-Sep-12 18:11:49

Interesting word 'snotty' it hints at rudeness yet trying to be superior. Wonder what the dictionary definition is? hmm
