Directoire style, mostly architectural, I think, was a feature of post-revolutionary France. It was quite neo-Classical as its inspiration was ancient Rome. (I know nothing about ancient Roman knickers.) It comes just before Empire style which is more the Jane Austen sort of thing, I think.

Wasn't the whole style of Empire-line clothing (Jane Austen's time; females anyway) called Directoire? Or is it the 'era'.
