Stupid Suggestions

Why do ebay and Amazon have to follow up every purchase you have made with suggestions of identical purchases based on what other people like you bought?

I have just bought a second hand wardrobe on ebay. At the bottom of the page acknowledging that I had paid for the item was a random selection of furniture that 'other people had bought' and a selection of about another dozen wardrobes that might 'inspire me'

Buy a book or CD from Amazon and they automatically assume that you will want to make the further purchases based on what other people who bought that book/CD bought next so they are all listed together with every other book the author ever wrote including the one you have just bought in the hardback version and its translation into serbo-croat. None of them are remotely relevant to your taste in books/music.

Why can't they ajust ccept your order graciously, thank you for shopping with them and hope to see you again and stop making stupid suggestions for further purchases.

I still think that the logic behind the choice for the adverts, however it is done, is poor. Just because I have bought a wardrobe it doesn't follow that I am interested in buying further wardrobes. It would be more sense to show me adverts for coat hangers, carpets and decorating materials on the basis that I may be refurbishing a room and that I am known to have bought curtain fabric and curtain rails online before. if I buy a book I do not have an immediate or any interest in buying the same book in different editions bindings or other languages but an analysis that most books I buy are second hand and most were published before 1950 might enable them to suggest second hand book shops near me or specialist book sellers I may be interested in

I think the logic behind the algorithms drawn up by Google and their like to show people adverts for things they think they might be interested in based on the last thing they bought online, is so pointless that they might as well not bother.

And as for the idea I would even look at anything headed 'people who bought x book also bought........'. or be 'inspired' to buy a second wardrobe having just bought one, well, words fail me.

Probably the banner ads are through Google. I know that anyone with a website can get Adsense to show ads relevant to the page so I assume that Gransnet has done this. But I repeat, the choice is from Google, so I don't think that Geraldine or anyone else has any say.

I have only found the banner ads on Gransnet to be relevant to what has been said on Gransnet. Probably because they are Google ones. (?) Not like the ads that appear everywhere else and, it seems, are down to a different sort of cookie. Bit confuseding really.

Elegran Mon 15-Jul-13 16:33:47

The banner at the top is added by Gransnet but they do not control the ads. That is done via Adsense.

Elegran Mon 15-Jul-13 16:30:53

Flickety and others. It is nothing to do with Gransnet that you get these ads linked to what you have mentioned, so don't blame Geraldine. Everything you put on here is open to all the search engines. Google tailor their ads according to any interest you show. You can opt out of that if you choose.

Has it really got anything to do with Geraldine? grin I think the ads can be fun, and Gransnet needs them.

FlicketyB, you're right about targetted ads; I looked up a hotel on Google and later got the same hotel mentioned on the banner at the top of the GN page. Geraldine, I didn't book the hotel and am not likely to go to that very small town, so please don't bother.

As for Amazon, I unsubscribed from their irritating emails on the understanding that I would still get the confirmation of order ones. However, as I am currently boycotting them as they don't pay enough tax, I don't know if I would still get those ones.

I obviously hadn't been to the pub that night....

glassortwo Sun 14-Jul-13 21:08:12

grin Tegan a Nescafe jar wont hold much!!!!

Tegan Sun 14-Jul-13 21:04:16

Always worried about a car driving over the tent. Used a Nescafe jar once. Y'know, never thought of using a bucket [probably wasn't mentioned to me when I was in the guides, but then they didn't mention Nescafe jars either].

Ana Sun 14-Jul-13 20:56:45

Yes - in my camping days we made do with a bucket...grin

noodles Sun 14-Jul-13 20:51:10

I think you're right Ana The late night / early morning wellies on to go to the loo, then check everywhere for spiders or other creepy crawlies might not have been necessary. smile

Nonu Sun 14-Jul-13 20:49:43

ANA, stop it !!!

Ana Sun 14-Jul-13 20:44:13

You might have enjoyed camping more, noodles, if you'd invested in a shewee...! wink

noodles Sun 14-Jul-13 20:37:11

Nonu You and me both! I have been camping quite a few times and absolutely hated it. Anything that flies bites me, and the horror of trekking to the toilet block... aaarrgghh!!

On a lighter note, my son, his wife and two young children go camping a lot and absolutely love it. We visit for a few days, but stay in an hotel where all of my creature comforts are available.

Nonu Sun 14-Jul-13 20:32:02

I COULD NOT THINK OF ANYTHJING WORSE THAN CAMPING.

Unless it is being in the Everglades in Florida and being bitten to pieces

horror , horror

j08 Sun 14-Jul-13 20:26:30

Has anyone ever used one successfully?

j08 Sun 14-Jul-13 20:25:08

Of all the posters on Gransnet who might have bought a shewee, Mishap would not have been top of my list. grin

Ana Sun 14-Jul-13 20:23:52

In the middle of the night, I mean!

Ana Sun 14-Jul-13 20:23:18

A shewee would be handy whatever kind of camping you were doing. Saves trekking over to the toilet block...

Bags Sun 14-Jul-13 20:16:09

I'm talking about wild camping, not camp grounds with shower blocks sort of camping.

Bags Sun 14-Jul-13 20:15:13

Because when you are camping is when a shewee is useful.

Mishap Sun 14-Jul-13 20:05:35

I once bought a Shewee (device for ladies to pee standing up) and amazon sugested that I might alos love some wooden tent pegs! - the mind boggles!

I got a great printer from Amazon at a hugely reduced price because it was 'used'. It had actually been a display model in a store and had never printed anything. It has served me well for around four years.

wisewoman Sun 14-Jul-13 17:40:37

Ah, but Frank if you buy something from Amazon their follow up service is brilliant and you can buy without any anxiety. Can't say the same for large electrical stores. Maybe you were just lucky with your printer. I have had a couple of problems with things from Amazon and they were sorted out almost immediately. As a result it is usually my first port of call (though of course I feel guilty about bookshops and high street shops blush
