To wish that posters would read what others have said

Why is it that so many people reply without paying any attention whatsoever to what they are replying to, or what others have posted previously on the thread? I don't mean when the thread wanders off topic, I mean when they are joining an on-going discussion.

I have even read posts which say "I have not read the rest of this conversation but my opinion is . . ." before jumping in with a statement which shows clearly that they have missed a lot of factual information and well-thought-out explanation and are talking a load of hot air from a position of complete ignorance.

Yes just what I said would happen margaretm74 See it's working already ! grin

margaretm74 Thu 13-Feb-14 09:53:01

I have carefully read everyone's posts and forgotten what I wanted to say.

Never mind, GN would probably have deleted it.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Feb-14 09:41:03

My post has been ignored.

See if I care. (tosses head and goes in search of porridge)

Aka Thu 13-Feb-14 08:53:42

Oh dear, I agree with all that's been said in here, both sides of the argument, I mean.

gillybob Thu 13-Feb-14 08:28:59

I was thinking on the same lines River . Sometimes when a thread is very long and you come to it late, by the time you had read and digested
what everyone said 100 posts ago you would have forgot what you wanted to say. Surely normal conversations aren't like this. Some people are there from the start and people come in half way through and right at the end too. I don't mind anyone saying "I said that ages ago" it's just waht they would say in a "real life" chat. confused

It's all just a load of hot air really, but it keeps us busy.

Riverwalk Thu 13-Feb-14 08:14:29

Why should anyone have to read what others have said before offering an opinion? confused

kittylester Thu 13-Feb-14 07:06:41

If someone says the same as I have said, I assume that I didn't make my own point clearly enough! confused

thatbags Thu 13-Feb-14 06:48:21

PS I don't think you're feelings on the subject are unreasonable, elegran, but i think you'll just have to grin and bear it.

thatbags Thu 13-Feb-14 06:46:51

It doesn't bother me. When the repetitions start getting tiresome, I just leave the thread. I might return to it if something interesting is said again, in which case I just ignore all the dross and respond to the interesting bit. It's bound to happen. Shrug.

Re post at the bottom of pages, as someone has already said, you can adjust the number of posts that you have on a page, so what is the bottom of a page to one person may not be the bottom of the page for someone else. So that is actually an imaginary problem.

You can have an entire thread on one page if you want, or 100 posts, or twenty-five...

Paige Thu 13-Feb-14 03:35:45

Yes Phe grin and LizG you must be a very interesting lady! smile

Anne58 Thu 13-Feb-14 00:50:40

paige like a*r"seh$le$ , everyone has them?

LizG Thu 13-Feb-14 00:34:50

Paige grin I have even been guilty of forgetting I have replied to a subject and worse, forgetting what I said. Then taking an almost opposite view the second time around.

Anne58 Thu 13-Feb-14 00:33:26

blush

Paige Thu 13-Feb-14 00:23:09

Yeah I just wait around and eventually someone posts what I wanted to say. Ever wonder why I don't post much? grin

LizG Thu 13-Feb-14 00:17:54

margaret grin .

I think it is a bit sad that we take ourselves so seriously. Sometimes I just don't have the time to read five pages and yet I would like to voice an opinion. Then I try to remember this when I start to feel irritated because someone is taking credit for my thoughts several pages back. (Angel with halo emoticon)

You know what they say Elegran – a camel is a horse designed by a committee. smile

margaretm74 Wed 12-Feb-14 23:38:49

See what I mean? Someone repeated what I just said. Same name as me as well, what a cheek.
(It was a mistake, not an attempt at humour. Still a novice at GN)

Paige Wed 12-Feb-14 23:36:18

meh...no big deal...what is it they say about opinions? hmm

Elegran Wed 12-Feb-14 23:35:17

Some threads remind me of committee meetings I have been at. A topic is raised and discussed, several valid points are made, they are discussed, and after chewing it around for a while a move is made to come to a decision on the subject.

At that point, someone says "I have had an idea!" and proceeds to suggest something that everyone else talked over thoroughly half an hour ago and rejected.

Lona Wed 12-Feb-14 23:34:32

merlot Not everyone has the same number of posts on a page. There are options smile

margaretm74 Wed 12-Feb-14 23:34:02

Saw this OP, thought I would come back to it after reading another thread - and there are already 14 posts on it. Must learn how to speed read. Must keep up.
And it takes me so long to type on this tablet that someone else has just posted what I was trying to say. Only more succintly and without typos

Maggiemaybe Wed 12-Feb-14 23:21:27

Me too. Sometimes there just isn't time to read every post. But isn't it just like real life - you come late to a conversation and put your two pennorth in, without knowing what everyone else has said before you turned up?

mollie Wed 12-Feb-14 23:08:27

I'm probably guilty. Apologies. Will do better.
