As a younger member of this community I want to take great care not to offend any of the other Gransnetters. I would be grateful for you input into how best to address you as a community. Would the term 'Senior user' be considered to be defamatory when talking about your use of the internet or would you rather the more colloquial 'Silver Surfer'.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Adam

Has Adam disappeared, scratching his head in bemusement?

Poor man probably imagined a lot of grey haired grannies, glasses perched on the end of their noses, knitting and drinking cups of Ovaltine!

Like those irritating old biddies that knit shreddies?

Nonu Wed 26-Mar-14 14:40:49

Aka that advert I think is ghastly , do any grannies look like that in real life ?
Hmmm

Elderflowers
Elderberries
Eldritches (misuse of adjective again, but worth it!)

Of course I am senior to you, junior, but then you are probably senior to your younger siblings (if any). It's not a particularly useful term and I dislike it because I dislike being pigeon-holed. Yes, I too have (mostly) silver hair. If I were a blonde, I would dislike being categorised because of the connotations that word has accumulated over the years (bimbo... airhead...). If you can't pigeon-hole me by my age or the colour of my hair, what then? Does it matter. We are as diverse as any other group... and so is your generation which one day will be, dare I say it, 'senior'.

Anno,.
I know where you are coming from, I dislike intensely , Old Age pensioner sounds so very , very old fashioned . A real throwback to the bad old days IMO,

What a thread to come across at the end of a difficult day, how on earth did it get overlooked yesterday? Totally riveting from the first response to the last. Thank you all for putting a great big smile on my face. Hopefully young Adam enjoyed his foray into the world of his elders and betters. Gransnetter is what I am proud to be and hope to remain.

I think I'd like to be an elderflower. DH can be an elderberry.

Both make good wine

Aka Wed 26-Mar-14 16:46:33

I'll drink to that wine

Someone's beaten you to The Elders.

I don't like the term 'seniors' as it's too American, and they refer to adolescents/teenagers as 'teens' not 'juniors'. I find it patronising. I don't mind being called an older person, because that seems to be where I am. I don't like elders, because it reminds me of my grandparents eating elder with their salad for Saturday tea. For those who haven't had the pleasure, elder was their favourite form of tripe, pronounced 'thripe' by paternal grandpa. grin

We could be Spekis - from the Old Norse meaning wise, which of course we all are wink

Ana Wed 26-Mar-14 19:18:47

Makes it sound as though we all wear specs though, which I don't. Or is it pronounced differently?

Nonu Wed 26-Mar-14 19:34:09

Ana grin

MiniMouse Wed 26-Mar-14 20:02:04

No idea Ana, I thought the same as you! Should have gone to . . . came to mind when I posted it grin Still think it's better than 'Seniors' though!
