As the trial continues I notice that every photo I see of Rolf going into court his wife is grinning widely and Rolf appears to be supported physically by his family.

Whatever the truth is I wish his wife didn't look as if they were going to a party. Also Rolf has always been quite sprightly, I wonder if his new demeanour is being put on.

What do you think ?

petallus Fri 04-Jul-14 15:21:19

Oh, and I don't mean to suggest that there would be offences with those specific names, but behaviour like that, whatever it is called.

petallus Fri 04-Jul-14 15:22:39

Sexual assault probably.

I wonder if a custodial sentence would be imposed.

KatyK Fri 04-Jul-14 15:24:51

A woman was just interviewed on the news who was 'assaulted' by Rolf in the 1990s. She was not one of those who had complained about him to the police. She said she, and a camera man, were following him as he was teaching children in Belfast how to paint. She said he was perfectly amiable and pleasant, told her about his daughter and asked about her family. Then when the piece was over and they were leaving, the camera man went first and she was left with Rolf. She held her hand out to say goodbye and he grabbed her face in his hands and pulled her towards him and put his tongue into her mouth. Whilst this is not a serious assault or an assault on a child, it was an utterly revolting thing to do. How dare he!

petallus Fri 04-Jul-14 15:27:04

Yuk!

That story has the ring of truth about it.

How dare he? He dares easily, as do many other men, I'd say.

Here's some sentences (scroll down a good way for sexual offences). The judge will take into account aggravating and mitigating factors, attitude, whether he pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, number of offences and number of victims, level of harm caused and so on.

Agreed petallus. I suppose with the famous ones, all that adulation makes them believe their own publicity, that they are wonderful and that the women they grope or whatever will be pleased and grateful. I have often thought that if you are feted and made a fuss of for years you may start to believe that you are special. Personally, I wouldn't know!

Ana Fri 04-Jul-14 15:40:58

Those are all maximum sentences, though, and how often do those seem to be handed out? hmm

whenim64 Fri 04-Jul-14 15:46:59

Frequently, Ana and judges will sometimes comment that they are constrained by the maximum length as they would often hand down longer sentences. Then you get those at the other end of the spectrum who say the 11 year old girl was 'no angel' and give light sentences. Usually, judges work down from maximum on mitigation and go back up with aggravation, then factor in all the other stuff.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 15:55:53

KatyK did she go to the police at the time? Or a newspaper? She was a grown woman. These historical offences are too difficult to prove now.

Btw I would include "vulnerable" adults. Goes without saying.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 15:57:01

"the ring of truth about it".

Right. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 15:57:58

This thread is getting gossipy now.

KatyK Fri 04-Jul-14 16:02:08

Jingl - no she didn't and she said she didn't tell anyone because it wasn't that serious. She was working for the BBC but didn't mention it to them because she thought there was no point, it was just another dirty old man. I think he was about sixty and she was in her 20s. She has never made a complaint nor does she intend to, she was just giving an account of what happened.

whenim64 Fri 04-Jul-14 16:07:15

'Unduly lenient' complaint!

Ana Fri 04-Jul-14 16:12:56

Well, considering that he could have been sentenced to 14 years for the sexual assault of child under 13, I'd say it was pretty lenient, too!

GrannyTwice Fri 04-Jul-14 16:32:09

Petallus - groping? Groping?

penguinpaperback Fri 04-Jul-14 16:52:15

I agree Ana, I'm surprised, a very lenient sentence.

Nonu Fri 04-Jul-14 17:04:16
