Just saw this over on mumsnet and it did make me laugh. Al Paseeno? My dear old grandfather used to pronounce the z in Chez Fred his local fish and chip shop. Such a funny memory.

I recently heard a news-re3ader refer to someone who may have committed a crime as "a susPECT"

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he was going deaf.

Mount Sinai is where the 10 Commandments were supposed to have been given to Moses, absent - why are you confused?

absent Wed 29-Oct-14 05:47:27

janerowena Was that actually supposed to be Ararat or was it somewhere that sounded like cyanide (Sinai perhaps)? Yours – Confused of Richmond.

I'm not sure how I didn't explode today. We went to Wisley, and overheard as a young boy asked his grandfather 'What is cyanide?'.

The grandfather replied, 'It's the name of the mountain where Moses handed over the ten commandments.'

KateK in our house we have a giraffe of wine.

Ana Tue 28-Oct-14 18:41:30

It's not difficult to say 'fifth' either, but 'fith' seems to have become the norm...hmm

Katek Tue 28-Oct-14 18:39:48

Courtesy of my sil...a cravat of wine

Or instead of height, they say heighth, adding a th on the end. Have heard this a lot. But it's not good manners to correct people is it? So how do you handle it? Do you then just say 'height' without emphasising it? It is so tempting to correct people, but not a nice thing to do.

rubysong Sat 25-Oct-14 13:20:37

People who say ' sickth' instead of sixth. It's really not difficult to say sixth.

Jane10 It was Terry Wogan who had the misheard lyrics- the full quote is
"You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel with four hundred children and a crock in the field." It was a song called Lucille.
When I was teaching one child thought it was "Harold be thy name" in the Lord's Prayer.
Geordies say "fillum" instead of film-so annoying!

Nvella Sat 25-Oct-14 02:42:06

Probably Supernanny with her "asseptable"

Back in the year 2000 my mum insisted on calling the the new 'me nelly um' instead of millennium. Agghhhh!
Thank heavens there won't be another one for a thousand years. I don't think I could stand the strain!!

Soutra Thu 23-Oct-14 21:54:45

My DGSs have "bitmins" every day . smile

mrsmopp Thu 23-Oct-14 21:23:56

Mum, a keen knitter got me to hold the hank of wool as she wound it into a ball. She got exasperated with me as my arms ached. "For goodness sake, will you hold it taunt!!"she exclaimed.

And pseudo American pronunciations by people who have been to the USA and fancy themselves as quasi American!

annodomini Thu 23-Oct-14 18:35:43

Annoyingly, some people who should know better that they are pronouncing the 'cc' in words like access as if they were 'ss' - assess. I have even heard 'assidental'. How on earth does this come about?

MamaCaz Thu 23-Oct-14 17:15:59

Ana grin

Ana Thu 23-Oct-14 13:28:47

Just be very careful when you go to see your GP, MamaCaz! grin

MamaCaz Thu 23-Oct-14 13:23:44

Ana: Oops. Yes, that's the one I meant - the third 'a' of asparagus blush. It seems I can't even count now!

feetlebaum Thu 23-Oct-14 11:57:21

My dear mother use to say 'vitamims', and 'ruband', for 'ribbon'. That last might have had some historicity - she had worked in a drapery shop as a girl, selling lace.

feetlebaum Thu 23-Oct-14 11:55:39

@mrsmopp - the boy Blair was also guilty of 'one pence' in Parliament.

@Nonu - I think you'll find that 'Mapp and Lucia' was a 1980s production (1985). How tarsome!

Ana Thu 23-Oct-14 10:55:16

How else would you pronounce 'asparagus'? confused

(or did you mean the third 'a' MamaCaz?)

mrsmopp Thu 23-Oct-14 10:27:19

Asparagus?? Don't you mean Sparrow Grass??

MamaCaz Thu 23-Oct-14 10:15:35

I daren't say St Pancras without mentally checking first that I've got the right word, as St Pancreas is just as likely to come out of my mouth!

DGS (age 3) says he likes chicken con carne.

In our family we all now pronounce asparagus with the stress on the second 'a' because that's how our son's Russian partner used to say it.

The one that most bugs me (out of a big list, because I'm a grumpy old thing !!!): pronounciation instead of pronunciation.
