Mumsnet is extremely lucrative (through adverts I suppose) Not sure if GN is. Yet.

Oh come on Alea. There would be profits, large or small, without members. Because there would be no advertisers. So in a way, we are bought. Although of course, the professional competitioners would still be there.

Anyone who thinks that GNHQ have an easy time of it, sitting with their feet up on the desk and and , reading all the books mentioned on the forums, should try running a local site, trying to get GNers to post on there as well as these forums, and to persuade local businesses to do a free listing, let alone a paid advert.

Anyway, I don't like the layout of the pages on Mumsnet, all cramped together, ours is superior!

Under an other name I won a 'Mother and Daughter' Spa Day. We had a wonderful time and have repeated it since. - and I am a frequent poster but rarely ever, anywhere, enter competitions.

Elegran, whilst I agree that it can't be easy being a local editor, GNHQ don't seem to have to do much persuading to get people to post on the main site.

I'm trying to remember now how I came to know about GN but I don't think it was through any sort of recruitment drive!

I found this site online, just browsing. I 'm not bothered about profiles as I prefer to stay anonymous, especially if discussing quite personal family matters or asking advice. The one thing that I did not realise is that once you post you cannot edit. That is kind of annoying but now I know I will be more careful what I post.

Well, I like Gransnet, and don't see what's not to like really (apart from the missing profiles) - it's free for starters, and noone has to join. I've been very lucky with the competitions. I won a lovely Forest Holiday last year and gave it to the kids so didn't get the benefit and a set of books this year, and I've had a lot of the reading group freebies (so much so that I'm starting to whine a bit now that I've missed out on the last three ) I don't mind who wins - regular posters, lurkers, professional compers - good luck to them I'm also sure that GNHQ care, and they do a good job of keeping us in order

I'm registered on the other place, but it's a bit frenetic. All those bright young things. Can't stay on there long without feeling a headache coming on

I'm not sure how editing would work, could posts be altered/deleted after posting? It could make it very confusing especially if you think you've read one thing and perhaps responded but when you go back the post has changed or disappeared!

Another forum I go on has a delete button, I`ve used it several times as soon as I realised my post hadn`t come out the wy I intended.

i think the site is delightfully quirky will all it's little foibles and crashes. It suits me. I won a lovely bike this summer and loads of books over the years.

I don't pay much attention to the advertising but I have bought things thanks to tips from GNetters, these include my Karcher window thingmy, my Dyson cordless, a Whizzer, eyebrow powder, etc..

I've had plants identified, tried out new recipes and had complicated knitting instructions explained. What's not to like?

I heard about this site from my sister, who had been subjected to some unpleasantness by someone who no longer posts (or still does, but under another name). In general it's quite fair with the mods not interfering too much, and does it really matter if people who don't post enter competitions? Just because a name isn't familiar doesn't mean they haven't been a member for a long time - some people LIKE to just lurk.

Surely it is what it is. Post, don't post, enter competitions, don't enter competitions, keep membership, resign membership. Please yourself and don't whinge.

I don't understand why some posters are so keen to have a profile page.

I've used message boards for donkeys years now and rarely use or read profile pages. Apart from those who meet up, we don't know the majority of posters and I prefer to protect myself from abuse (and more) by not recording a lot of personal information on a site. Giving information about yourself in a post is one thing, giving any Tom, Dick or Harry a good wodge in one place is not sensible imo. Apart from the knowledge that rows can turn personal on here, we're all aware of how older people can be vulnerable to being targeted by the unscrupulous, so why make it easy for them?

GN is not the most user friendly message board I've used and as a minimum we should be able to edit our posts for a set period of time after posting (say 15 minutes), plus we need a flag telling us if we have a PM. Relying on an email is not the best way of doing this.

I don't doubt for a minute that Cari and her team work their socks off to keep the site going and am grateful to them. I won a book in my first month on here and was thrilled. I enter the competitions if I fancy the prizes, hopeful of winning because I have won before

I don't read the daily e-mail so they could save the bother of doing that. I used to read the weekly one. Other than that I think this whole site could do with a refresher/refurbishment.

I miss profiles simply because I like to know how old posters are, and whether they are a man or a woman. And perhaps, which neck of the woods they hail from.

I would never put a photo on a permanent profile page. That's ok on a thread that drifts off into the ether.

Fifteen minutes would be far too long for an edit button. There would be several answering posts by then. Much confusion all round! We don't need one at all. Preview if you're that bothered.
