We have not got a profile page

We cant edit.

We dont have a posting list, [who posts what where] available on many other sites.

GN entices with books, freebies from the publishers.

Sadly we are being bought for a mess of potage.

Owners dont give a tuppenny toss what we do as long as their coffers are filled, and not a sweary word from me YET

PS gringrin
If you go to "I'm on" on the mobile site it shows you the last post and who it's from on each thread. Also useful if there's several pages as it takes you straight to the last page if you click on the last post.
I'm sure most of you know that anyway.

Clearly I'm easily flummoxed jingl smile
(and I have a headache) sad

ninathenana Wed 11-Nov-15 09:53:29

Am I the only long time (couple of months from the start) member who doesn't enter the competitions ? To be honest I never think to look. I did randomly receive a book once but didn't do anything for it.
The profiles page doesn't bother me but I really would like an edit button. It saves adding another post as a PS and you can reinstate the words that your device decides you've got wrong ! This occurs when you press post so despite checking I end up having to post again with a correction.
Having said all that, thanks Cari & Co. I love GN <3

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Nov-15 09:47:06

Healthy cynicism I would say.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Nov-15 09:46:20

"Who's for us? Damn few. And they are all dead".

What's flummoxing in that?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Nov-15 09:44:13

Totally confused at that.

The original poster got her message over. That was the important thing. hmm

Alea Wed 11-Nov-15 09:36:33

grin How to antagonise the entire population south of Gretna plus a few north!!! But taking the chance in case anybody else is flummoxed (love that word)

"Here's to us Carruthers!
Oh, I say, absolutely!
Not a lot of chaps like us, what, what?
Damn few, old chap, and sadly no longer with us.
Chin, chin, old boy!"

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 11-Nov-15 09:28:46

I miss profiles simply because I like to know how old posters are, and whether they are a man or a woman. And perhaps, which neck of the woods they hail from.

I would never put a photo on a permanent profile page. That's ok on a thread that drifts off into the ether.

Fifteen minutes would be far too long for an edit button. There would be several answering posts by then. Much confusion all round! We don't need one at all. Preview if you're that bothered.

loopylou Wed 11-Nov-15 09:22:37

smile Thanks Alea
It's still utterly alien to me <wanders off shaking aching head> as a Sassenach!

My thought was that it is a misremembered version of a Scottish "toast" "Here's to us!"

"Here's tae us
Wha's like us?
Dam' few
An' they're a' deid"

I don't read the daily e-mail so they could save the bother of doing that. I used to read the weekly one. Other than that I think this whole site could do with a refresher/refurbishment.

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 11-Nov-15 08:49:37

I don't understand why some posters are so keen to have a profile page.

I've used message boards for donkeys years now and rarely use or read profile pages. Apart from those who meet up, we don't know the majority of posters and I prefer to protect myself from abuse (and more) by not recording a lot of personal information on a site. Giving information about yourself in a post is one thing, giving any Tom, Dick or Harry a good wodge in one place is not sensible imo. Apart from the knowledge that rows can turn personal on here, we're all aware of how older people can be vulnerable to being targeted by the unscrupulous, so why make it easy for them?

GN is not the most user friendly message board I've used and as a minimum we should be able to edit our posts for a set period of time after posting (say 15 minutes), plus we need a flag telling us if we have a PM. Relying on an email is not the best way of doing this.

I don't doubt for a minute that Cari and her team work their socks off to keep the site going and am grateful to them. I won a book in my first month on here and was thrilled. I enter the competitions if I fancy the prizes, hopeful of winning because I have won before grin

grin absent

I still can't work out what the saying in the thread title is supposed to mean!
waes for us, damn few, and they are all deid???
Seriously strange confused!

absent Wed 11-Nov-15 07:14:41

Surely it is what it is. Post, don't post, enter competitions, don't enter competitions, keep membership, resign membership. Please yourself and don't whinge.

Ceesnan Wed 11-Nov-15 06:49:21

I heard about this site from my sister, who had been subjected to some unpleasantness by someone who no longer posts (or still does, but under another name). In general it's quite fair with the mods not interfering too much, and does it really matter if people who don't post enter competitions? Just because a name isn't familiar doesn't mean they haven't been a member for a long time - some people LIKE to just lurk.

i think the site is delightfully quirky will all it's little foibles and crashes. It suits me. I won a lovely bike this summer and loads of books over the years.

I don't pay much attention to the advertising but I have bought things thanks to tips from GNetters, these include my Karcher window thingmy, my Dyson cordless, a Whizzer, eyebrow powder, etc..

I've had plants identified, tried out new recipes and had complicated knitting instructions explained. What's not to like?

numberplease Tue 10-Nov-15 21:57:05

Another forum I go on has a delete button, I`ve used it several times as soon as I realised my post hadn`t come out the wy I intended.

loopylou Tue 10-Nov-15 20:10:53

I'm not sure how editing would work, could posts be altered/deleted after posting? It could make it very confusing especially if you think you've read one thing and perhaps responded but when you go back the post has changed or disappeared!
Very confusing imo (not that it takes much smile)

Maggiemaybe Tue 10-Nov-15 20:08:14

Well, I like Gransnet, and don't see what's not to like really (apart from the missing profiles) - it's free for starters, and noone has to join. I've been very lucky with the competitions. I won a lovely Forest Holiday last year and gave it to the kids so didn't get the benefit and a set of books this year, and I've had a lot of the reading group freebies (so much so that I'm starting to whine a bit now that I've missed out on the last three sad) I don't mind who wins - regular posters, lurkers, professional compers - good luck to them smile I'm also sure that GNHQ care, and they do a good job of keeping us in order cupcake

I'm registered on the other place, but it's a bit frenetic. All those bright young things. Can't stay on there long without feeling a headache coming on grin

Cher53 Tue 10-Nov-15 20:03:00

I found this site online, just browsing. I 'm not bothered about profiles as I prefer to stay anonymous, especially if discussing quite personal family matters or asking advice. The one thing that I did not realise is that once you post you cannot edit. That is kind of annoying but now I know I will be more careful what I post.
I really enjoy the site and appreciate the fact it is here.

Ana Tue 10-Nov-15 19:53:54

Elegran, whilst I agree that it can't be easy being a local editor, GNHQ don't seem to have to do much persuading to get people to post on the main site.

I'm trying to remember now how I came to know about GN but I don't think it was through any sort of recruitment drive!

M0nica Tue 10-Nov-15 19:49:20

Under an other name I won a 'Mother and Daughter' Spa Day. We had a wonderful time and have repeated it since. - and I am a frequent poster but rarely ever, anywhere, enter competitions.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 10-Nov-15 19:18:51

No harm in jollyg saying what she thinks though. I'm all for it! smile

rosesarered Tue 10-Nov-15 19:18:36

Anyway, I don't like the layout of the pages on Mumsnet, all cramped together, ours is superior!

Elegran Tue 10-Nov-15 19:10:55

There wouldn't be many advertisers if there were no members to advertise to, though. It is a spiral.

Anyone who thinks that GNHQ have an easy time of it, sitting with their feet up on the desk and wine and cupcake cupcake , reading all the books mentioned on the forums, should try running a local site, trying to get GNers to post on there as well as these forums, and to persuade local businesses to do a free listing, let alone a paid advert.
