They had this topic as a phone in on our local radio and there were some fascinating answers. Thought I might try it here, so

The milkman coming with a horse. I must have been very small, though, since we moved from that area when I was 6.
Dds thought it utterly hilarious when I told them!

The rag and bone man coming round the streets calling out "rags and bones."
A jar wrapped in yellow cellophane containing a powder that you added to water to make a fizzy drink. I think it was called Koolooze? (sp). Way before Cremola Foam.

I remember the drone of bombers during WW2 and the anxiety of the grown-ups as they watched the planes.
I remember pikelets being toasted over the fire on a long toasting fork whilst the Ink Spots were singing on the wireless.
I remember seeing my father for the first time when he returned from the war in the spring of 1945.
I remember the air raid shelter opposite our house and I remember the day it was knocked down when the war was over.

Ditto to bomb damage. I remember seeing it everywhere (S London) in the 50s - and in summer, rose bay willow herb growing all over it.
