Blooming scatter cushions

We are house sitting for relatives and on going into our designated bedroom we find scatter cushions on the bed hmm. This really irritates me. What are we supposed to do with them? I have got them stacked up on the sofa.

Can someone please explain the point of these great cushions which seem to have infiltrated lots of hotels too. I hate them.

Love cushions! Made some out of a silk sari someone gave me, and anyone who visits is so complimentary! We have some on the bed and I just chick them on the floor at night.

kittylester Tue 15-Mar-16 11:43:36

Nankate, no idea what they are called now but I hadn't heard 'scatter cushions' for ages. smile

Anyway, jing has decreed that I am pretentious so what do I know! grin And, not only do I have cushions on the bed but I have a matching strip. I had them made to match the curtains (it's getting worse!) In my defence I would like to say that our bedroom windows are small and the bedding is white so I wanted more pattern! blush

Another confession - each time I have given birth, DH has bought me a monkey (soppy s*d!) so there are 5 spread around our bedroom and are very special to me. Unfortunately, DGD1 has decided that I like cuddlies and remembers every single one she has bought me and checks where they are! grin

I suppose my neighbour could see my dangling duvet, but then hers is probably dangling, too, J. No secrets in a French village wink

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:15:29

I meant he duvet out the window. Not me!

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:14:46

I air the bed. Just while I have brekker and GN though. Leave it any longer and it wouldn't be done at bedtime. shock (and that's horrible!)

Haven't got the nerve to dangle out of window. grin I do put 'em on the back line when I change for seasons.

ffinnochio Tue 15-Mar-16 11:10:43

No cushions is my bedroom, scattered or otherwise, only pillows. I don't make the bed until late afternoon, as I throw back the duvet to air, and on fine days hang the duvet out the window. Very continental! smile

shock smile

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:02:58

Cushions and strips on beds at home is pretentious.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:02:01

I wouldn't call a cushion a 'pillow'. Just wrong. But the bathroom basin is a sink. As well as a basin. Or the trade 'wash hand basin'. Which sounds ridiculous.

FarNorth Tue 15-Mar-16 10:59:19

Exactly, Indinana. I guess it's a harmless habit for people who want to do that but confused.
I'll stick to pillows for comfort, propping etc.

Teacher11...cushions are called "pillows"
across the pond in the States.
Ive bought some lovely Laura Ashley cushions online with heavy discounts.
So I wait for that time to arrive !!

Indinana Tue 15-Mar-16 10:50:19

I think these terms are American imports Teacher. I do agree with you though, I hate the usage. I have nothing against the words being used that way in the US, but why, if we already have perfectly usable words, do we have to substitute terminology from across the pond? No doubt we'll soon be 'hanging a left' instead of turning left hmm

Bez1989 Tue 15-Mar-16 10:48:51

I love my lounge cushions on sofa and my Ercol armchair. The chair came with two cushións on either side in matching fabriic for arm rests. Ive ditched those in favour of two decorative ones both for comfort and for looks. The conservatory sofa has two cushions at one end for our Westie girl to use for her comfort !! I use two other cushions on my bed for medical reasons.
But I confess cushions are my weekness.
When we went into a store that has fine
cushion display my hubby would say
"The manager has told me all cushions
on display have been sold" smile

Teacher11 Tue 15-Mar-16 10:37:49

Has anyone noticed how EXPENSIVE nice cushions are? Laura Ashley will rush you fifty or sixty pounds for a decent cushion which is a significant proportion of what you'd pay for the actual sofa.

My pet hate is people calling cushions 'pillows'. A bit like calling the upstairs bathroom basin a 'sink'. Are the makeover programmes to blame?

Indinana Tue 15-Mar-16 10:37:32

I have never really 'got' the cluster of cushions on a bed, nor the strip of matching fabric at the bottom. In a hotel, yes, I can see it adds ambience, but at home why? You make the bed, arrange all the cushions and bits of fabric artfully and then go downstairs and inhabit the daytime rooms until it's bedtime again, when you take these decorations off and throw them on the floor while you sleep. What on earth is all that about? confused

If I want to sit up and read I prop myself up with an extra pillow. As someone upthread said, at least they have easily washable pillowcases, unlike cushions.

Lupatria Tue 15-Mar-16 10:34:07

i've got cushions on my bed and they go on the floor every night - i like the look of a bed with cushions.

in addition to the cushions i've got my christmas present from my grandaughters from a couple of years ago and daren't put it away as they live with me - it's a pink and orange owl. i collect owls so they thought they'd add to my collection.

however i must admit that it looks good on the bed with the cushions.

michellehargreaves Tue 15-Mar-16 10:25:59

I use large, decorative cushions behind the pillows. They add to the decor, are useful for propping me up when I am doing the crossword and I chuck them on the floor when ready to sleep. I couldn't have lots of smaller cushions though, just 2 per bed.

NanKate Tue 15-Mar-16 10:10:07

Well I see you are mostly in favour of what I call scatter cushions, is there a more modern name for them Kitty ?

I suppose when I started this thread I should have said we have lots of cushions in our living room, mostly to stop DH having a bad back. It's the large size cushions on beds I dislike. They are not generally soft enough to cuddle up to and are often of shiny material, like taffeta, and I am worried I will mess them up.

However when all is said and done I can't be doing with them. Now soft rug/blankets are my thing to cuddle up on the sofa. smile

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 09:31:00

And let's face it, most hotel rooms in this country need something. They could take a lesson or two from the 'continent'. hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 09:28:42

They're like that decorative bit of matching cloth that goes across the bed two thirds of the way down. Again, it's all about ambience, Darling.

Lona Tue 15-Mar-16 09:23:09

Such a lot of intolerance for cushions wink smile

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 09:17:41

People use the beds in hotels for lounging/tv watching. That's what the cushions are for. Even when perfectly good chairs are provided. hmm And I suppose they give the room a bit of ambience.

Charleygirl Tue 15-Mar-16 09:17:08

I have enough to wash without adding cushion covers in a bedroom. I have 3 bedrooms- 3 lots- I do not think so.

Luckygirl Tue 15-Mar-16 09:04:39

off

Luckygirl Tue 15-Mar-16 09:04:23

I often look at the bed cushions n B&Bs and hotels and wonder what the heck they are there for. If you use them to sleep on, that is dubiously hygienic as they do not have the sort of pillow case you can take of and wash. Who knows who has dribbled on it before you!
