So many Gneters think that it is not fair to target the readers of certain newspapers - and yet- the front pages of some of those newpapers are full of hate targetting foreigners, day in, day out. Today foreign drivers who phone or text at the wheel. Phoning or texting at the wheel is a menace, and should be stopped - whether it is mum or dad on the school run, white van drivers or lorry drivers, anyone- irrespective of nationality, sex, ethnicity, profession - ALL:

Totally agree with his 'rant' of the sheer hatred and racism in the popular Press at the moment- which is spilling out onto our streets too:

STOP PHONING OR TEXTING AT THE WHEEL - be you Polish, or British, or a dad or mum on the school run, or a Trader, or ... ANYONE - JUST - STOP - IT - please.

"By returning your Lego you are implying you support a newspaper that prints racist articles on its front page." implying almost exactly the opposite, I'd have said.

Were you interpreting a post so as to reinforce your opinion of the poster? I hope not.

Wow I love this guy - why can't we have Pierre Trudeau as Prime Minister, please: solutions, not hate and fears:

Off to Cape Town tomorrow to visit the place where my OH was born 70 years ago- and where his family was destroyed by Apartheid in 1948, when his parents emigrated to the UK (which they could do as grand-father was Brtish). Will visit Robben Island- and see what it was like, to live with hate- and as Trevor Noah says, to even be born a crime. Lest we forget.

Now English is not my language, I know - but it seems to me that sentence is not really gramatically well formulated:

'Why I answered durhamjen's question is for me to wonder about.'

I'd say that 'the reason why ...' would be gramatically better. But thanks.

Yes, got the smile bags, of course.

All diversions of course to the real issues.

STOP FUNDING HATE by buying newspapers that peddle hate and racism. Simple.

Well done, Ceesnan! grin

Ana Mon 14-Nov-16 16:45:10

It was nelliemoser who said of POGS you appear to me to be racist, then denied that she meant that POGS was a racist...confused

thatbags Mon 14-Nov-16 16:43:47

grin grin and Chortle McChortle, cees!

Ceesnan Mon 14-Nov-16 16:42:20

Why I answered durhamjen's question is for me to wonder about. A sentence starting with 'why' and is not a question!, could we have a smug emoticon please?

thatbags Mon 14-Nov-16 16:40:00

Can someone bring me up to date, please? CBA to read all the stuff in between.

Did a gransnetter return some Lego because the Lego company pulled its offer out of the DM?

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 16:37:43

I meant exactly what that sentence says, Ceesnan. It does not say that POGS is racist, does it?

thatbags Mon 14-Nov-16 16:36:38

That,s what the smile was meant to do anyroad. Bloody uncooperative emojis! ?

thatbags Mon 14-Nov-16 16:35:39

You are right, gj. I was illustrating the general use of "why". Sorry if that wasn't clear. I thought the smile might have indicated the light, not unfriendly teasingness of my comment.

Ceesnan Mon 14-Nov-16 16:35:34

By returning your Lego you are implying you support a newspaper that prints racist articles on its front page. You wrote that yesterday durhamjen, and when tackled insisted that you hadn't meant what people thought.

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 16:35:14

Just realised I missed a question mark off there.
Can you spot the undeliberate error?

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 16:33:57

Jalima, Ceesnan realised that was a question and answered it. She said she didn't agree with me.
Did you miss it.

POGS hasn't been bullied off before. Why would she leave now?
She likes the sparring. She will be back later with a very long post.

Ana Mon 14-Nov-16 16:33:27

I think POGS is made of sterner stuff, but the accusation was disgraceful!

rosesarered Mon 14-Nov-16 16:30:48

hear hear Jalima

Jalima Mon 14-Nov-16 16:28:04

Oh, you mean like someone accusing POGS of being something she is patently not from all her posts because she said she read a certain publication?

I do hope that is not someone else who has been bullied off.

ps the above was a rhetorical question btw

granjura Mon 14-Nov-16 16:18:17

thatbags, I am rattling my little brains here- can you give an example of a sentence that begins with 'why' and is not a question. Why on its own is not a sentence, is it?

granjura Mon 14-Nov-16 16:16:58

Ah- but where is the problem with that clear question, as it has a clear ?at the end, clearly making it a question.

I was thinking about that one, acutally ' Why are you all so happy to defend such things because it's 'free speech' and yet turn on someone for giving their opinion on a forum?' by Tegan- even if she had forgotten the ? - it would still very clearly be a question.

Jalima Mon 14-Nov-16 15:45:27

Although, actually, you haven't said you do not agree with me, have you?
I can't find why in that sentence/question but perhaps I am misreading it.

Sometimes a question can be rhetorical - to make a point.

thatbags Mon 14-Nov-16 15:44:31

Why! Bless me! I think there might be exceptions, gj smile

granjura Mon 14-Nov-16 15:39:57

Perhaps it's just me, that I don't think a statement normally start with the word 'why' ! intonation or no intonation.
