Lead story World at One, the whole of the Media Show and now the lead on PM

I don’t agree that being a valid victim makes all victims equal. What does that actually mean? Do you mean that there is some kind if pecking order or hierarchy? Surely not?

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 22:41:45

mostly the answer must be yes. I like your second sentence btw.

mostlyharmless Wed 11-Oct-17 22:09:23

It is dominating the news excessively.

But it reflects the power of the male celebrity which sadly seems woven into our society.

It stands incongruously next to stories of a President of the US who claims openly that he "grabs women by the pussy" and doesn't seem to be subject to any sanctions for his behaviour.

Are these powerful, wealthy men above the law?

I don’t agree that being a valid victim makes all victims equal.

kittylester Wed 11-Oct-17 20:50:32

You are being unreasonable! Each victim is a valid victim in their own right regardless of who their abuser was.

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 20:38:07

But isn’t there a real hypocrisy in the current situation? The MSM and SM frothing over his behaviour whilst they all peddle the sexualised images of young women and the kudos and wealth that goes to young women based mainly on their looks? There’s something very corrupt about all of this -Donna Karan the fashion designer you refer to designs cleavage and thigh revealing dresses for women to wear to ask for it in. I’m increasingly thinking that there are conceptual differences between what CS and JS got away with and why - such as the options open or not to their victims and the self interest of why HW got away with it. I agree about the basic issue of people not speaking out but there are huge differences as well

Iam64 Wed 11-Oct-17 20:27:57

maryeliza, I understand your feelings but I believe the conspiracy of silence around men like Harvey Weinstein goes hand in hand with the non prosecution of men like CS, JS etc.
It's about powerful individuals, usually men, using their power and position to get their needs met. I heard a female clothes designer dismiss many of the complainants as "asking for it" because of the way they dress. Victim blaming in this kind of crime is widespread. Why didn't the women speak out - good question but the answer is simple. Would they be believed, would they ever work again? Would making it public make it harder for them to deal with their feelings about the incident. Would they always be blamed?

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 20:22:34

Re his wife - some say she’s more worried about the impact on her business. She knew and heard nothing until this week? ????

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 20:21:20

But when it comes to UK news I expect CS and the abusevof children to be prioritised

GracesGranMK2 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:59:29

no maryeliza - there should be no suggestion of a hierarchy of abuse. Is there a hierarchy of murder? All such sense of entitlement needs to be called out as does the idea that it is okay to facilitate or turn a blind eye to such behaviour.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:54:39

Gill57, his wife is not standing by him; she is leaving him.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:53:37

Oh Iam, just got down to your post - thank heavens.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:52:44

It’s the prominence that I find ridiculous - the first 20 minutes of PM? Really?

So what does take precedence over possible and recorded rapes and sexual attacks on probably as big a scale as Saville? Has the Queen died?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:50:17

Why all the fuss, we have all heard of the casting couch have we not . This cannot be compared with Saville

Please tell me where a single victim of either will find it incomparable? For heavens sake these are people manipulated by a culture that needs to be changed and changed quickly.

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:38:47

I don’t want to get into a debate about hierarchies of abuse but vulnerable children in the care of the la being abused by CS compared with the HW situation

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:36:43

Exactly ann

Grandma70s Wed 11-Oct-17 19:36:27

I don’t know why anybody’s surprised. The media are going on as if they’ve never heard of such a thing. It’s as old as the hills.

Aa change in culture would certainly be welcome, and it does look as if it’s happening. The women who mostly went along with it at the time are now realising how demeaning it was.

annsixty Wed 11-Oct-17 19:31:57

I am far more exercised by the current investigation into Cyril Smith.
The most horrendous cover up by the establishment for many a long year.

GillT57 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:28:07

What I cannot understand is why his wife has 'stood by him'...(maybe because he is loaded). He has daughters, and if my husband was charged and admitted guilt of this sexual exploitation I would kick him out. How could anyone get back into bed beside a man knowing what he had forced other women to do? All of you who are saying that this is the way it is and always has been, well yes, I agree, but would you feel the same if it was your grandaughter or daughter, your son or grandson? This was not about sexual favours for getting parts, it was sexual favours to stop being blacklisted. Disgusting. Needs to be dealt with and those idiots who supported Roman Polanski need their heads examined.

Anniebach Wed 11-Oct-17 19:06:08

I am sorry for what I have done but I will sue because I have been accused of doing what I apologised for but didn't do it

grin

maryeliza54 Wed 11-Oct-17 19:00:24

It’s the prominence that I find ridiculous - the first 20 minutes of PM? Really?

minesaprosecco Wed 11-Oct-17 18:58:24

Not much of an apology then. Hypocritical as well as licentious.

Anniebach Wed 11-Oct-17 18:56:38

He has apologised for his actions but is suing a newspaper for printing the story, work that one out n

Iam64 Wed 11-Oct-17 18:49:01

We may find it tedious and all a bit Hollywood but it raises the profile of the exploitation and abuse of young people, as well as once again reminding lecherous blokes that their behaviour isn't acceptable.
We need a culture change don't we.
It's interesting that the film industry is calling him out, belatedly. Sacked from his company etc.
Meanwhile the other (alleged) serial sex groper becomes Potus.

Anniebach Wed 11-Oct-17 18:48:12

Yes it is a nasty couch but girls are willing to grit their teeth for a part in a film, sad but true .
