Over the top advent calendars

I am horrified by this new idea of really expensive advent calendars that everyone is trying to flog now. I was in M&S today and they were having a big promotion on advent calendars filled with toiletries "worth £250" which you could buy for "only" £35" if you spent so much in store. Boots and Debenhams are promoting similar.
A quick look on Amazon shows calendars filled with alcohol miniatures ranging from£900(!) to £100, calendars with beer, candles, nail varnish, toys....everyone is jumping on the bandwaggon.
It seems to me that these things actually de-value Christmas Day. Part of the excitement is the anticipation - if we are deluged with gifts every day throughout December what will be special about Xmas?
IMHO, Advent calendars should be just for kids and have a little chocolate at the most in them!
Rant over!

Haha, no way in gods green earth would I spend hundreds on advent calendars. I used to adore those lovely, glittery nativity scene calendars but I couldn’t find one for me. I did find the usual choccy a day calendars for the children, for my son and his partner and for my own DH !!!!!! Get them one each every year. There’s a bit of s child in all of us ?

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 13-Dec-17 10:35:46

felice I wondered how you make a sheep costume so Googled it! I was surprised to find that it's not as hard as I thought, but you do need a lot of cotton wool balls!

Have a look here tchgrin

Nativity play at church soon felice - we have a sheep outfit but I expect DGC will be asked to be a shepherd!

Jalima1108 Tue 12-Dec-17 23:20:30

Thank you both, will check it out.

felice Tue 12-Dec-17 23:14:35

Surprised to see this thread is still going, to go back to the start DGS is so enjoying opening his Lego calendar every day. The little Lego items are lovely and we are having so much fun with it, the Grandma with the cookies was on the snowboard this afternoon.
He also opens his old fashioned one, doors only and is enjoying the countdown to Christmas.
Nativity play at Church this Sunday, he wants to be a Sheep but not sure if I can find the stuff, so a Shepherd it will be.

The brand I miss is NXY which was bought by L'Oréal which is the biggest baddie for me in the world of animal testing. I have not forgotten L'Oréal being at the forefront of the delays for a ban on animal testing in the EU. Unfortunately it owns several other brands I would like to buy, especially Maybelline and IT Cosmetics. It annoys me when I find products that I like and then a company like L'Oréal comes along and buys the brand. angry

nightowl Tue 12-Dec-17 22:49:28

I agree Wilma it’s a minefield and it can be tempting just to plug your ears, close your eyes and sing lalala! I also refuse to buy products whose parent company is not cruelty free - I had to abandon Bobbi Brown and Dermalogica, both of which had been favourites for many years.

I agree Superdrug is great, as is the Coop all of whose personal care and household products are cruelty free and leaping bunny certified. Household products are another minefield!

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 12-Dec-17 22:28:53

Sorry to harp on about this subject, but it is actually a bit more complicated than you might think because a lot of the brands certified as cruelty free are actually owned by parent companies that are not cruelty free.

It's up to the individual where they draw the line, but if I find out that the parent company is not cruelty free then I stop buying the brand. L'Oréal is one of the worst culprits for buying cruelty free brands and keeping them cruelty free, whilst not being cruelty free itself.

In all honesty I can be like an ostrich with its head in the sand and not want to know about non-cruelty free parent companies, but once I do find out my conscience won't let me carry on that way.

Some of the top cruelty free brands owned by companies that are not cruelty free

Don't look if you'd rather be an ostrich! tchwink

PS Big cheer for Superdrug because all its own brand cosmetics and skin care products are cruelty free - and many are highly rated too.

Whoops! The Bah Humbug was not for animal testing it was for the commercialisation of Advent calendars.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 12-Dec-17 22:11:42

It's a big deal for me and the worst one of all for me is Avon because it lead the way by stopping animal testing and made this subject a selling point for years.

The worst thing is that if you raise the subject with any of the brands which restarted testing just to sell in China, the standard answer is that their products you buy in the UK are not tested on animals. As if that's the point.

NotTooOld Tue 12-Dec-17 22:07:16

Hmm. I feel a Bah Humbug coming on..........tchconfused

Iam64 Tue 12-Dec-17 21:36:01

Thanks for the link nightowl. Those companies won’t get my cash in future.

Elrel Tue 12-Dec-17 21:34:04

Night owl - how awful, a big step back for animal rights.
