Windrush Generation

The actions by the current Home Office make me ashamed to be British. The attempts to declare the Windrush generation of Caribbeans illegal immigrants is yet another example of witless politicians and civil servants who appear to be unable to work out the impact of their policies and ultimately laws on ALL citizens of Britain. I am appalled by the current fiasco. These people answered the call for support as members of the Commonwealth and this is how we treat them. I hang my head in shame.

Does it look better ir worse Jalima ?
It's horrendous and even DH agreed it did not look like me.

I will probably be scanned, patted down, taken aside again at every airport, but that is no different to usual! [sigh]

Utility bills are usually in one name, not joint names.
Ours used to be in mine but since DH took over the household finances when he retired, they are in his name.

grin
My bus pass is a bit like that, I look a bit of a shady character.

lemongrove Wed 02-May-18 22:15:43

Disappointingly, nobody challenges me about it.?

It takes little research on the Internet to find numerous articles on voter fraud and their hot spots.

MaizieD Thu 03-May-18 17:01:34

Perhaps you could give me a few links, Joelsnan. My first two pages of search results for 'voter fraud uk' came up with a series of results saying that voter fraud was negligible.

All our utility bills are online now and paperless, so I couldn't produce one, I suppose I could print one off or find one on my phone, but how many people are going to bother, especially if they've had a busy day at work , collecting kids, cooking tea etc.

The pilot scheme seems to be a great success not hmm

It’s not just the few who turned up at the polling station without ID - it’s the people who didn’t have any suitable ID available or who didn’t have time to search for their documents.
I’ve often, in the past, dashed into the polling station on the way home from work, without having to think have I got my passport, polling card etc.

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 19:02:41

It seems like the different areas are stating different requirements. Swindon say you need your polling card, if not then photographic id such as passport, & they won't accept bank statements etc. Whereas Bromley are saying photo id but include bus pass etc or 2 other things from a long list which includes bank statement, utility bill etc. It will be interesting to see how many were denied a vote at each place

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 19:05:49

People of the Windrush generation who are struggling to get relevant id, and people who can't afford passports or driving license, are the ones who could end up disenfranchised if these requirements are introduced more widely

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 19:08:57

On 16th April 2018 the Tories said "all cases would be sorted out within a fortnight".

Windrush Statistics:

• 7,000 have come forward
• 3,000 identified as Windrush Victims
• 100 Victims now have their cases solved
• 96% of identified Windrush Victims still don't have their cases solved

The different pilot areas are piloting different forms of ID. However the whole voter Id project is aimed at reducing the Labour vote. This government is an absolute disgrace

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:05:17

maryeliza, I'd have to agree with you. There were problems with postal votes in 2004/2005 but current data available doesn’t suggest that in-person or proxy voter fraud is a significant problem (I think there was one prosecution?). Info from the USA provides some evidence that strict ID requirements may have an uneven impact across different communities, and risks therefore having a distorting effect on electoral participation. The pilot should be scrutinised very carefully.

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:26:50

The USA info is from University of California San Diego (sorry I can't find the link now)

MaizieD Thu 03-May-18 20:33:10

I'm still waiting for Joelsnan to come back with all this information on voter fraud which a simple internet search was supposed to find...

Well whilst you’re waiting Maizie

MaizieD Thu 03-May-18 23:29:41

Well, yes. that was the sort of thing I was finding, maryeliza...

We're clearly not looking in the right place...

Lutfer Rahman, once the mayor of Tower Hamlets was banned from holding office.
The judge said that he had driven a coach and horses through election law and didn't care

maryeliza54 Fri 04-May-18 08:18:15

Voter ID is aimed at those who vote when they are not legally entitled - it is a sub section of electoral law which includes a huge range of possible offences - you know like the Tories not declaring all their election expenses or that dreadful UKIP man who pretended to live in the constituency. I think some posters haven’t quite understood that
