AIBU to object to impossibly lovely , happy, or successful grans like in the Forums' photos at the top of the page?

Pornography is a distortion of the whole truth

My wild hair is past improving, although the hair on my head seems fine.?

You’re a good sport Alexa ??

Jalima1108 Sun 01-Jul-18 23:18:55

Thank you - much appreciated Alexa smile

Bouquets to Jalima, Far North, Lemongrove and others for laughs out loud.

FarNorth Thu 28-Jun-18 23:00:18

I really wouldn't want to see a photo of someone who looks like me, to start off the page grin

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Jun-18 21:25:48

I have a photo on the right of the page of some very grim-looking Victorians in their best clothes, advertising a genealogy site.

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Jun-18 21:21:39

we are not old dears who need to be shown nothing but pretty pictures.
I agree - it's enough to see ourselves in the mirror occasionally and give a sigh of appreciation at our undoubted loveliness.

lemongrove Thu 28-Jun-18 21:15:28

Ask HQ to put some pics of wrinkled grans with hairy chins
At the top, if it bothers you.

Alexa that may be today’s interpretation of the word, but pornography is overtly sexual material, nothing to do with misleading, lying or partial portrayal.

oldbatty Thu 28-Jun-18 20:58:12

Alexa are you really 340 years old?

suzied Thu 28-Jun-18 16:56:48

It is possible to be lovely and happy etc. No problem with that. Though I've got Disneyland at the top of mine.

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Jun-18 16:39:01

I'm not lovely, but I have occasionally been described as impossible. grin

Alexa Thu 28-Jun-18 16:01:44

The quality of the contributors to Gransnet shows that we are not old dears who need to be shown nothing but pretty pictures.

Lemongrove,it is an unusual use of 'pornography'. The essence of pornography is not the material it's the lying, or partial portrayal of the material.

Oldwoman70 Thu 28-Jun-18 14:31:51

I'm neither a grandparent or impossibly lovely grin

lemongrove Thu 28-Jun-18 14:26:43

I think that I am possibly lovely rather than impossibly lovely.grin

jenpax Thu 28-Jun-18 14:24:02

As an impossibly lovely grandparent I only want to see other impossibly lovely grandparents ??

lemongrove Thu 28-Jun-18 13:42:46

I don’t see a problem with any pics of attractive grans on here, would we all want to see unattractive ones? In any case I certainly din’t think I have seen any ‘impossibly lovely’ ones.
I also think it a very strange use of the word pornography.

The guardian often features stock photos to accompany people facing various dilemmas. For example a model with tousled hair in a bed with gorgeous, expensive bedding allegedly worried about her relationship. She will crop up again a few weeks later worrying about historic abuse. Then they have the shot of 'worried male'. 30 something, slight stubble, handsome and well dressed. He can't cope or he has addiction issues. It's pretty lazy really. I get what you're saying OP. They are stock images and do not represent reality.

alexa if we're honest we'd have to say that the day-to-day routines of others are at times, less than fascinating.
I remember the advertising when FB was launching - pic's and comments because someone had just painted her toenails! Umpteen pic's showing the meal that someone was about to consume!
Sorry, but I am not particularly interested in the minutiae of the lives of strangers.
Quite different when I read about the goings-on in the lives of folk I 'know' on GN!

grumppa Thu 28-Jun-18 10:12:32

Where? Where? Where are all theses glamour pics of Grans? All I have at the top of my page is an ad for MacDonalds grilled chicken meals. Is this a subtle reference to Grans being chicks, as with the hotel proprietor on the Isle of Wight who served Mrs. Grumppa her dinner with the immortal phrase "Chicken for a chick"?

Alexa Thu 28-Jun-18 09:56:10

MCEM, it's always interesting to see reality portrayed in photos.

mcem Thu 28-Jun-18 09:51:55

Are you seriously suggesting that GNHQ should go knocking on the doors of a prison to ask if an elderly inmate would care to act as a model?
How interesting would it be to see someone simply getting on with their job - whether cleaning, sitting at a keyboard or serving in a shop?
I really think you're labouring the point and not getting overwhelming support from a bunch of women who aren't made to feel inadequate by a few photographs!

Contributors may or may not be grans or even older women , who have lively minds and real experiences and are not stereotypes.

BTW has a gran ever been pictured wearing a hijab? A gran living in a B and B for the homeless? Grans at their work cleaning other old peoples' houses? A criminal gran in prison? Gran who cannot afford to visit the dentist? Gran who never wears makeup?

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Jun-18 20:35:26

as I have never every been 'impossibly lovely' and grew up seeing models such as Twiggy, Shrimpton, etc, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Jun-18 20:34:19

All I can see on the home page is a hand.

However, I should say that one of the 'impossibly lovely grans' has, on at least one occasion, been a real gransnetter.
(but not me!)
