I, too, have talked to Americans who love the Royal Family. I had a heated discussion with one at a dinner I attended when I dared to suggest a hereditary monarchy was so last century. He went on about our monarchy and how they were highly regarded throughout the world. I pointed out that what he meant was that Elizabeth II was highly regarded. I suggested that perhaps the Americans might like to take them over and fund their lifestyle, an offer he speedily declined.
I hope they have a good day for the wedding but they should fund it themselves - all of it.

This wedding should be confined to Windsor Castle and any costs met by the Royal Family themselves.
The Civil List needs severe pruning perhaps they should be paid a fee for each appearance they make! That would take the Yorks out of the equation as they don't contribute much at all. The Sovereign the Heir and the Spare should be covered and the rest should be funded by the R F or earn their own living.

There is no civil list , it changed a few years ago.

Some modernisation certainly is needed.

I think there's been a misunderstanding here - I didn't mean funding for security - obviously; what I meant was funding for the RF's private lives is not provided by the taxpayer - the taxpayer provides the funds for them for the jobs they do and the security involved as a consequence of this, HM as Head of State and all the expenses that involves and the others of the RF who carry out duties on her behalf as requested by the public and required by the office of the Head of State.

I do think that the carriage ride resulting in extra security costs is a mistake.

There is a lot of misunderstanding of how the office of a Head of State works.

I think Eugenie has been a little unwise to emulate Harry's wedding as surely something different would have been more sensible. However, perhaps the poor girl has been dreaming of an open-carriage ride post-nuptials, for most of her life but Harry whipped in first, so what is she to do?!

I can't quite equate a quick trip around Windsor to a £2 million security bill (presumably the chapel and castle are always under scrutiny?) but agree that this cost should not be borne directly by local taxpayers (although the local community will benefit from extra souvenir/restaurant) trade.

Can you imagine if the crowd (which I am sure will be smaller than for Harry's wedding) should be attacked in any way, and there had been little security in place? There would be uproar. Perhaps £2 million from the public purse is worth the safety of our citizens.....? It does not seem fair to me for Eugenie's father to have to bear the full cost of protecting the public.

I do wish the British press (where I came in!) would stop inflaming the 'have' and 'have not' mentality. Eugenie is ninth in line of succession and as such deserves a modicum of support and an enjoyable wedding day.

But why? Because of an anachronistic system and an accident of birth? She is no more deserving than anyone else imo. It would take something of the magnitude of a nuclear holocaust to give her any significance in the monarchy.

Maybe she could morph into a sort of female Bear Grylls after the nuclear holocaust?

Oh I do OldMeg thank you for asking . An elected figurehead . Chosen by the people on his or her merit and not as an accident of birth . Perhaps an ex politician, perhaps not ? Definitely Someone respected by the ordinary people .

Where would their official residence be?
What monies would be allocated to them and what security would they need?

Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always ‘bad’ men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority.

Even if not, some of them, once elected, seem to change the rules to enable them to stay as Head of State for life.

What powers would they have?
At least our present Head of State, although expressing views in private to her PM, has to remain politically neutral. The position is as Ceremonial Head of State.

There are plenty palaces , castles owned by the country that the elected figure head could live in . Wouldn’t allow palaces and massive incomes for their grown up offspring and their offspring and their offspring ........forcever and ever .
