AIBU to be looking forward to Autumn,? Beautiful colourful leaves, wellie boots, squelchy walks, fireworks , home baking OK perhaps not that one ( never turns out the way I envisage.)
Do you have a favourite season & what is the reason ?

Must say I don't think of summer really being over until the end of September.

Do any of you who suffer from depression during the short days use one of the daylight lamps designed for SAD, and if so, does it help?

I'm asking because I have a Swedish friend who's going back there to live, having lived away for many decades, and already she's getting in a bit of a tizz about the even shorter winter days there. Was wondering whether to recommend a SAD treatment lamp.

If the Met Office is to be believed, we are in for another heatwave lasting into November. Apparently it's a 'plume' arriving from Africa via Spain.

GabriellaG Tue 28-Aug-18 13:15:31

Spring and Autumn are my favourites.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. We should be thankful that we can get out of bed to enjoy another day whatever the weather. My Mother was bed bound for years and would have loved getting out in any weather.

I do not look forward to Autumn generally but this one will be very different. I should finally retire in October and at the age of 74 I now feel I have done my bit.

It is also our 50th wedding anniversary in the same month which we are really looking forward to although we do not know what our three daughters and their families have planned for us.

It will be the second time I have retired with the first being in 2013. I agreed to go back to the business to "help out" in the same year and been "helping out" ever since. I think that proves the old adage "never volunteer".

However, this Autumn should be something very special and Carol my wife and me are really looking forward to it. smile

Another autumnal person here, I dislike the sun and heat. Love cooler days, changing colours, rain and its a precursor to winter. Cold days, cosy dark nights, not long until Christmas - lovely .

I love Autumn, always have. I like being able to go walking on the crunchy leaves without getting overheated but also without having to wear a heavy coat. I love the crisp mornings . Several years ago I was lucky enough to visit New England in the fall and the colours were absolutely stunning. Definitely my favourite season

Autumn is ok until the clocks go back then I start to sink into a depression. Then the dark evenings make me want to hibernate till Spring. Everything in the garden is dying and lots of sad memories come back to me.
I am trying to make more of an effort this year. I've signed up for an Italian course and volunteered to sell Christmas cards for good causes in Nov/Dec. Hopefully that'll keep me occupied until I can start looking forward to Spring and getting out in the garden again.

I actually love all four seasons as they each have so much to offer - Spring all the new births (eg Lambs), flowers coming out and all the bright colours resurfacing and the weather warming up; summer for all the colour and warmth, beautiful life all around you, motorbike rides; autumn for the change in colours, smell of bonfires and the change to warmer clothes and boots;winter for snow, wrapping up, warmth when you walk in the door after being outside and Christmas, which I love.

Nanny123 Tue 28-Aug-18 12:15:05

I love spring, the garden is starting to come alive and there is hope for a good summer. The nights are getting longer and people seem happier.

In the local butcher's the other day a customer was buying ham shanks and heading home to make soup.
My soup season runs from mid-October, when the DGC return to school for the winter term, until the Easter holidays start.
My fellow customer makes soup all year round!

Witzend Tue 28-Aug-18 11:38:52

While I've (mostly) enjoyed the summer, I am now looking forward to autumn, aka 'Season of mists and mellow
soupfulness' in this house, since I do make a lot of thick, main course soups - no recipe but just whatever veggies I have, plus any suitable leftovers, lentils, pearl barley, etc. Plus bread and grated cheese.

They were a necessity many moons ago when dh and I were utterly broke, but he still loves them and would eat them every night.

I don't mind the dark evenings, since I have a Nativity set for Gdcs to knit, pref. by 1st December, and there's still an unfinished jigsaw (in one of those zip-up cases) left from last winter. I somehow don't feel right doing them during more clement seasons.

jennil23 I relate so much to your post. I lived for 10 years in Papua New Guinea; it was a long time ago now, but I continue to love heat and sunshine, and dread winters, particularly the lack of light, more every year, hence autumn fills me with foreboding..

Legs55 Tue 28-Aug-18 11:35:24

Love the Autumn colours, driving on a sunny Autumn day along avenues of trees all different colours. Don't even mind Winter too much as long as we get crisp, sunny, frosty weather. Even though I was snowed in twice last year it was lovely looking at it from indoors or wrapping up warm scarf, hat & gloves (my waterproof boots got their 1st outing 5 years after I 1st bought them) .

Spring for all the new shoots & Spring flowers. Summer, long hot days, enjoying being outside.

Kim19 Tue 28-Aug-18 11:33:41

Awful Autumn. Harbinger to Winter. Definitely not for me. I will concede it can have some attractive colouring but the reduced temperature negates that for me. One bonus is that my various friends and family try to squeeze in one last meet up before settling in for hibernation. That is good. Also there looks like some promising drama coming on tv and, of course, Strictly. Other than that - roll on Spring!

JackyB Tue 28-Aug-18 11:28:01

I love the Autumn, too - we really had a lot of summer this year, and it's about time it got a bit cooler. At the moment it's ideal - still sunny but not so hot.

I had thought of starting a thread where we could praise our favourite month in rhyme. (Mine would be September, I've thought of a couple of lines already)

Would there be any takers?

AllTheLs Tue 28-Aug-18 11:24:53

Yes, Autumn is my favourite by a million miles. Love the colours - the Acers, Dahlias, autumn leaves on a woodland walk, etc, etc. Resuming birdwatching, blackberries, end of the ever-lasting school holidays, that lovely slight sense of melancholy. Oh, I just adore Autumn.

Willow500 Tue 28-Aug-18 11:16:20

I'm definitely an autumn/winter person - I love it when the nights start drawing in and we can put the lamps and candles on and make the house cosy. My mum hated the dark nights but loved all the colours of the changing trees.

Nanny41 Tue 28-Aug-18 11:15:33

Like Cherrytree 59 I love Spring, favourite flowers daffodils, the promise of lovely things to come.
Autumn is depressing thinking of what is to follow, darker days, having to wrap up when going out, not like during the Summer when you can just go out, no jacket, boots scarves, etc and driving in the dark, my pet hate, I must add we live in Sweden, and it is DARK and cold for many months.Roll on SPRING!!

hillwalker70 Tue 28-Aug-18 11:12:36

I prefer Autumn and Winter as it seems to be a far more sociable time, everyone back from their travels and winter classes and societies start up again. I much prefer to be out and about on winter evenings, then come home to my lovely quiet, placid home.

Craftycat Tue 28-Aug-18 10:51:41

Summer.
I hate Autumn when everything is dying & winter is so miserable.
Spring is OK but lovely hot summer days are my favourite.

oldbatty Tue 28-Aug-18 10:47:21

Anything after the Spring equinox is fine by me.

Mapleleaf Tue 28-Aug-18 10:46:23

Your garden looks lovely, * Flossie*.

Mapleleaf Tue 28-Aug-18 10:41:39

I love the freshness of Spring and the colours of Autumn, but to be honest, each season has its special beauty and something to enjoy.

blueberry1 Tue 28-Aug-18 10:21:58

Totally with you bridgeit, autumn has always been my favourite season.Beautiful colours and crisp days;evenings snuggled up on the sofa.
