Am I alone in getting confused by all the references to DD, SiL, DGD etc? I just read a plea in another forum where I really could not work out who the poster was talking about.
It doesn't take much more work to type 'my husband' or 'my grandson' , or even 'my son-in-law's sister's daughter's child'.
But it does make the relationships obvious.
confused

My previous post was deleted because I inadvertently mentioned a certain garment - sorry.

sodapop Thu 20-Dec-18 16:28:42

Yes we can do that Maw but I agree with tinafl a long post with a lot of these abbreviations is definitely off putting for me.

MawBroon Thu 20-Dec-18 16:09:05

Sigh
Don’t do it if you don’t want to.
If it is the convention of the site, live with it.

I do understand the abbreviations now but find all the darlings & dears extremely irritating. Do people actually prefix daughter, son, husband with dear & darling in real life? I certainly don't know anyone who does. I use words not abbreviations or acronyms in text messages too.

StillGame Thu 20-Dec-18 15:55:50

I think its telling that the in-law abbreviations never have the Dear/Darling in front of them whereas all the other relations do.

Farmor15 Thu 20-Dec-18 15:27:34

Agree with mcem who posted earlier in the thread that these are not acronyms but abbreviations. Gransnet should change the heading on list.

tinaf1 Thu 20-Dec-18 13:38:35

Get what your saying SparklyGrandma but when it's a long post about different family members with loads of abbreviation I just look and then CBA ?

SparklyGrandma Thu 20-Dec-18 03:34:53

I thought DH, DD, DDiL, DS etc were either affectionate, or said with irony through gritted teeth.
Makes it entertaining guessing which. Dear as a prefix can be seen in different ways...

MawBroon Sun 16-Dec-18 21:22:12

Why what?

BlueBelle Sun 16-Dec-18 21:15:49

Why?

Chewbacca Sun 16-Dec-18 19:28:26

Just substitute darned/dreaded/dratted/damned?

MissAdventure Sun 16-Dec-18 19:22:57

Me neither.
It sounds very twee if you say it out loud.

tinaf1 Sun 16-Dec-18 19:05:29

I get the part about acronyms, but what I don't get is why it has to be dear or darling in front of them ( retreats behind the sofa ? )

That’s GransNet by the way tchgrin

MawBroon Sun 16-Dec-18 12:04:04

It wasn’t my list Bluebelle I merely copied and pasted the Acronyms page kindly provided by GN. confused

BlueBelle Sun 16-Dec-18 11:24:10

I don’t need MawBoons list ?I m intelligent enough to work most of them out but I think like some people don’t have an ear for languages or even music I don’t automatically read a post littered with abbreviations and understand it It muddles me, I have to go back and read it again saying the full word in my head to get the gist

I think it’s sloppy in an age when we go on about teens and their text speak and frankly a bit hypercritical

I think the darling, dreary, difficult stuff is awful who in this day and age constantly refers to their darling husband or darling daughter if it’s copied off Mumsnet let them keep it aren’t we able to be individual in our thinking

Anyway rant well and truely over I will continue writing the full word and thoroughly appreciate the posts that do so too and avoid some of the long threads littered with DD s and DSs and leave those for you clever people who read them easily

Missfoodlove Sun 16-Dec-18 10:52:27

I just don’t use them! I would never refer to Mr P as “ darling or dear husband”.

Brunette10 Sun 16-Dec-18 09:09:40

EllanVannin - also did Pitmans shorthand many, many years ago and still remember short forms etc. Oh the days!

DanniRae Sun 16-Dec-18 09:03:02

I don't like them either but don't think it's ever going to change........so I always type out everything in full and at least people can read my posts easily!! wink

AlieOxon Sun 16-Dec-18 08:57:54

They do it on the News too....
