Just New Year to get past and that is only a few hours long.

But wait! There's more to come. There doesn't appear to be a thread for objectors to carry on about "Hot Cross Buns"
They've been on sale here since before Christmas. Or is the "E" word, like the "C" word, not allowed just yet? grin

Thankyou Alexa

I like your attitude, Downtoearth.

Alexa I hope so,I have fought many battles over the last 15years,I need some peace and strength, which seem in very short supply at the moment

Alexa Wed 02-Jan-19 11:42:38

Downtoearth, your chosen pseudonym is IMO the right foundation for hope .

Glad someone else took the decorations down. I just felt like tidying up but think DH was a bit miffed when he arrived home from work and everything had disappeared.

It’s hard isn’t it?
No matter how hard we try and indeed cope with loneliness, illness, bereavement or loss of any sort, it sneaks up behind you and can knock you sideways again.
I thought I had foreseen and could handle the potential flashpoints but I was being optimistic. And didn’t
But onwards and upwards, I think Scarlett O’Hara got it right when she said “Tomorrow is another day”

annsixty - good to hear you have a positive vision for the New Year. I have had my first New Year on my own ever and it has it's ups and downs. Family were all here for Christmas and after but needed to get back to work as they live some distance away. People have been very kind and I have been reading other gransnetters posts but it has been hard. Nothing replaces the one you loved. Music has helped starting this morning with the New Year Concert from Vienna which we have watched for many years.

So pleased to hear that you are hopeful annsixty
I wish you a peaceful and very pleasant New Year, be kind to yourself flowers

I have had a new experience at Christmas
My H has been in a care home for 5/6 weeks.
Tonight I have had dinner with the outlaws.
Very pleasant very relaxing.
Hopeful for the New Year.

Happy New Year everyone.

Christmas/New Year can be so difficult, especially following a bereavement or being or having someone close who is suffering. It is a time of reflection, particularly when you are older. Personally, I appreciate the family meals, exchanges of gifts, games and walks with the dogs. I dislike the commercialism and the fact that it all kicks off in September. It should start later, end sooner and be simple.

Our last houseguests left this morning and I wasn't intending to take the decorations down, always used to do it on the 6th.However nice as it was the build up to Xmas seems to start ever earlier, even if you try to avoid it.So started tidying up and couldn't stop. Then took our dogs out for a lovely sunny walk .And felt -liberated !Happy New Year everyone.

Meno flowers No wonder you haven’t been cleaning the Argy lavs lately! We do need you there, so hurry back.

Gonegirl Tue 01-Jan-19 19:58:17

It's not over in our house. I'm sure I can still smell this Xmas tree. Can't chuck it out yet.

Menopaws Tue 01-Jan-19 19:55:11

I did work every day over Christmas and the days I've been ill we're my seasonal time off, typical! My mums ill and I've been ringing her every four hours to nudge her taking antibiotics, inhaler etc so caring over the phone so as not to infect her!

I loved Christmas as a child and when my children were small but now it's so different with everyone dotted about, we still haven't had our family day as it was due today but I've had flu and didn't want to risk with vulnerable grandchild so that's on Sunday now.
I can cope with that easily enough but our job at nursing home means that Xmas songs are on all day from Dec 1st, including outside entertainment, it drives me mad and by the time it comes I've had enough of it.
Today was a perfect post Xmas day for me. Having been in great discomfort and unable to sleep for five days with barely the strength to blow my nose for the millionth time, I slept five hours properly last night and the pain has gone, today I pottered about enjoying domestic chores again, resting and watching crap on tv, even had some food! God it's nice to feel better, so I'm glad it's over tbh, happy new year everyone

Nelliemoser Tue 01-Jan-19 19:14:21

I had a full house for a while over Christmas. Me (and him) coughing dreadfully.
My grandkids and their parents.

My son and his new girlfriend.

At one point we were all sitting on the floor playing with our long unused Lego on its way to the grandsons. A lovely time was had.

Jalima1108 Tue 01-Jan-19 18:04:35

So many people do have to work over Christmas and New Year due to the type of work they choose - and we're thankful to them all.

M0nica Tue 01-Jan-19 13:43:57

labazs1964 in the absence of any further information I can only assume that that was your choice. So you obviously chose it because you wanted it to be like that.

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Dec-18 20:01:43

A lovely country walk on Saturday followed by a couple of fairly lazy days (apart from this morning) of crosswords, reading, making phone calls I should have made before Christmas.

I hope you have a break soon, labazs - it could be quieter at another time anyway.

labazs1964 Mon 31-Dec-18 18:55:37

christmas and new year just working for us as usual no holiday no celebration just usual same old same old

lemongrove Mon 31-Dec-18 17:33:31

Yes, we had a similar experience today Jalima after spending a fortune on food.
I have enjoyed Christmas this year in spite of a sore throat.
Seeing the family and having time to relax and read our new books ( and eat far too much of mince pies, trifle and Christmas pud.)Watched more tv too, and played cd’s and watched films on dvd’s, as well as a few country walks.
So not really wanting it all to end.

Jalima1108 Mon 31-Dec-18 15:24:02

We should never have ventured out to the supermarket this morning - it took 40 minutes to get out of the car park afterwards!

Oldwoman70 Mon 31-Dec-18 15:14:06

Gonegirl Thanks for the hug! I'm not usually that self pitying just for some reason it got to me this morning!
