I bought some 'plastic tat' probably made in China yesterday - two refillable water bottles for the DGC; they have some but DH broke one of them. More to go in the recycling [sigh].

Yes, I know there are metal ones - one to go into the recycling because it leaks. And it has a plastic lid anyway.

I find it hypocritical that people criticise anyone whose ever taken a flight or eaten a burger - helps them feel justified in ignoring the important message.

We may know the problems and be doing a bit of individual small scale action, but unless governments seriously get behind cutting emissions and tackling the problems of plastic and pollution by the fishing and agricultural and other big industries, the problem won’t begin to be seriously addressed. It can’t be left to self regulation - there has got to be concerted action and legislation. Pressure must be put on our esteemed politicians to put this at the top of the to do list, not giving tax reductions to the wealthy. That’s what we should be doing not pouring scorn on people who are trying to draw attention to the problem.

I knew about climate change more than 3 years ago, and have been doing what I can for years. XR want to disrupt air traffic. Supposing they do it the day he's due to fly, will he still think it's right if he misses his flight and can't get another for a week or so? You say chance of a lifetime, but these protestors may well have caused somebody to miss their "chance of a lifetime" in one way or another, not to mention missed hospital appointments, and the poor man who couldn't get to his dying father in time If 17 is old enough to preach to others, then 17 is old enough to follow your own advice. Greta Thunberg is only 16, she talks the talk and walks the walk!!!

It seems to be that it takes disruption for anything to get done. If there was no protests and no one drawing attention to the ecological crisis, then we’d just go around with our heads in the sand thinking someone else will do something. We may not like the methods but if thats what it takes to get the message across then so be it.

Aware but doing nothing

Most of us in our own way have tuned in to the need to recycle, compost, not buy plastic, to re-use plastic whenever possible, to use solar energy, to save water, re-use water, turn lights off, only drive the car if it's necessary, but to car-share and use public transport too. We are even building insect hotels and leaving part of the garden to wild flower meadow. Our local council is into planting up islands and verges with wild flowers. I donate to charities preserving endangered species, and I feed the birds and leave water out for wildlife. The list of all the things we can do to help grows daily, and most of us with a conscience try to do our bit. Most of us have got the eco-friendly message.

Big business has to play it's part.

Stopping traffic and people going about their business while they block roads and sing and dance and wave their posters about in a jolly group gathering isn't endearing many to ER. We all know the problems the planet faces. They seem to be creating more problems, and not solving any.

His father has for years done a huge amount of work for the Scouting Association. GS is following in his dad's footsteps. We, as a family, will not let him not go because of this.

janipat I have already explained the hat. The Scout Jamboree was arranged nearly three years ago, before anyone had heard of ER and before GS became so engage with saving the planet. He hasto go now. There is no getting out of it. As I said before, he is spoiling his anticipation of the trip because he feels so guilty about the flying.

it wont SOLVE it but it will HIGHLIGHT it ..keeping things in the public eye is key to moving towards a solution .Sometimes the most ridiculous things trigger a response in people and that will make them think

Gonegirl you're so proud of your grandson and his worry for the planet, and yet you say he will fly to the states for 3 weeks for a scout jamboree. Hardly essential travel is it, just a jolly? Just because it's booked and paid for doesn't mean he has to go. It's this not being prepared to deny themselves that causes people to think that many of the protestors are just hypocrites. And sorry, but XR welcomed Emma Thompson with open, adoring arms, and welcomed her high profile for their cause. They have to take the flak she inevitably invites too!

Just because someone doesn't agree with the methods of XR doesn't mean they don't accept there is a problem which needs to be dealt with. Again I ask, how does sitting in a pink bath in the middle of a major road do anything to solve the problem
