Ok so part of the town is shut off due to protesters causing diversions and more traffic fumes. Also the majority probably don't use public transport or ride a bike to work. When the kids did it it was on a school day not a weekend. And you can bet they drive with parents to school, clubs, visit friends etc to say nothing about gap years later when they fly around the world. Also I'll bet a lot go on foriegn holidays and certainly not biking in the countryside. Also the mess left behind shows they don't care about the environment much either. Why protest in busy streets etc when we have a huge green outside our council buildings? Anyone else feel like this or am I just a miserable OAP
Thoughts?

Elegran ^ sceptics say "See - there was no need to worry and take all that trouble after all. It never happened! What a waste of time and effort doing all that protesting and cleaning up!"^
That's what they said about the millennium bug. No praise for those of us who worked our socks off for several years to make sure it didn't happen!

re; a couple of points above - 'global warming' is often replaced by the phrase 'climate change' or even 'climate weirding' because a lot of folk are morons and don't understand that global warming is a cause and the symptoms can be flooding or cold weather when you expect warm or droughts when you expect rain. Many of the protesters are young. Young folk protest. I used to - now I write angry letters and let the young ones do the street protests. Thank goodness some of them still do rather than spending all day attached to Televisions watching soap operas and ignoring the plight of the planet and our fellow suffering human beings - those already suffering the effects of pollution and climate damage. SOMEONE has to care. The Greatest Generation are almost gone. The Comfy Smug Generation aren't going to do anything nor will they be the ones still alive when everything really goes tits up. Well done the protesters. Anyone protesting near me will be offered a cuppa.

Gonegirl Tue 16-Jul-19 10:50:25

Yes. A man bun. hmm/smile

Better them disrupting the streets of London than those streets awash with floodwater from an ever-rising Thames.

Has it ever occurred to those who poo-poo concern with climate change that there are two possible scenarios ahead?

1) Everyone listens to the predictions, does their best to understand them, and then alters their lifestyles to leave as small a footprint as they can. Governments listen and pass legislation that makes it an advantage to act to prevent the predictions being fulfilled and a disadvantage to continue adding to the problem. Those who see that their government is not taking any of these measures make a hell of a noise about it and persuade them to take action.
Result - global climate warning is arrested, the earth does not reach a critical and irreversable stage, all is well, and the sceptics say "See - there was no need to worry and take all that trouble after all. It never happened! What a waste of time and effort doing all that protesting and cleaning up!"

2) Starts with people saying "Shere is no point in taking the trouble to protest and causing inconvenience. It may never happen!" So protesters don't protest, no-one is inconvenienced, governments go their own sweet way, those who don't bother about climate warming continue not to worry. Thins go on as before. ~The efforts of the converted are not enough, the global temperature gradually increases, gaining speed as the feedbacks feed in and heat causes changes that generate more heat.
Result - It gets too late to reverse.

I'd rather see GG's GS and his blue boat disrupting the streets of London than the Tommy Robinson menacing rabble that were causing mayhem last week.

Is that a man-bun?

Gonegirl Tue 16-Jul-19 09:41:20

GG'GG

He's got another year before he does his A levels.

merlotgran Mon 15-Jul-19 20:58:15

One of my DGDs has just finished her A levels. She left school weeks ago.

merlotgran Mon 15-Jul-19 20:56:33

I wish two of my grandsons would do something like this instead of ignoring my pleas to put their take-away boxes, drinks cans and all things plastic in the recycling bin. angry angry

We end up doing it for them.

In desperation!

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 20:54:12

No, he's 17. He's halfway through his A levels. The exams would be school exams I suppose.

merlotgran Mon 15-Jul-19 20:51:46

She did say he'd finished his exams.

I think.

merlotgran Mon 15-Jul-19 20:51:09

N&G, I don't know how old Gonegirl's grandson is but if he has just taken his GCSEs, he will have been allowed to leave school once his last exam has been taken.

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-19 20:30:49

I'm so glad my daughters chemo was never held up by protesters.
I'm not sure I would have been responsible for my actions.

Beckett Mon 15-Jul-19 20:26:14

There were interviews on local TV tonight - one person was unable to get to the hospital for an appointment, another was late for her chemo. treatment. When asked about this one of the protesters said "it's worth it"

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 20:21:05

Are you asking me?! ?

I dunno. I'm only his granny.

gillybob Mon 15-Jul-19 19:58:18

And just for the record :

one of the world's largest container ships can emit about as much pollution as 50 million cars. Further, the 15 largest ships in the world emit as much nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide as the world's 760 million cars.

So how do we move anything ?

gillybob Mon 15-Jul-19 19:54:53

All these protestors must be seriously loaded if they can afford to buy rail tickets at the last minute !

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-19 19:52:45

smile
Thank you, I love the highlands, I could hear that lovely gentle accent when I read that.

Elegran Mon 15-Jul-19 19:47:58

If it had not been highlighted, would there have been any changes, or would people have said "But I didn't know . . " ?

When the Highland sinner went to heaven, God met him at the gate with a catalogue of his misdeeds, and the news that he would not be admitted but would taking the down escalator to the everlasting bonfire. The sinner wept and pleaded, and said, "But Lord, Lord, I didna ken!" But the Lord answered him "Weel, ye ken noo!"

However often people are told the truth, once more doesn't go amiss.

MissAdventure Mon 15-Jul-19 19:40:35

I don't understand how highlighting it does any good though, seriously.
Have there been significant changes bought about by these protests?

I'm not being facetious; I genuinely don't know.
