(What’s a fogey anyway ? Anyone know ? )

I mute the tv during the ads
I like my house warm
I avoid being on the road in the school run
I like quiet
I love good manners.

I must be an old fogey . I avoid crowds , like my own company and not really bothered about going out socialising and I like my own home .

Grandmama - I don’t think you’re an old fogey. You just like good, old-fashioned stuff! smile There’s nothing wrong with being sensible and enjoying decent things.
Old fogies (is that the correct plural form?!) include anyone who can stand to watch cricket… confused
Sorry, but I just don’t get it (the point of it, that issmile). The commentators are worse than the game itself. Nasser Hussain is the worst - does he actually possess a sense of humour? Bumble is okay, though. At least he’s funny, but he’s still an old fogey!

Been an old fogey for years and getting more fogeyish every day. Loose leaf tea, tea pot, tea cosy knitted by me, table napkin (for me, DH doesn't bother), fountain pen with proper ink not cartridges, cotton hankies, face flannels, bath (no shower here), have only just got a mobile phone (basic Nokia with no internet, only got it to keep in touch with DH who is not well), listen to the Home Service on the wireless, watch Dad's army, write thank you letters, have a milkman, never cut string so can spend hours unknotting it, knit, use furniture polish, always bone china cups and mugs, no microwave, no freezer until last year when we bought a small table top, daughters say I live in a museum and so it goes on . . . .

I’ve come to the conclusion that oldfogeyism is the pinnacle of success.
Those who have achieved it have found the meaning of life....and it’s good.??

Nannanna Wed 02-Oct-19 19:06:23

Nannanna Wed 02-Oct-19 18:54:29

Lovely cup of tea brewed from loose tea and top up from beautiful teapot...bliss

TrendyNannie6 Wed 02-Oct-19 18:38:25

In some ways I am. I love eating my dinner with tray on my lap in front of the tele, I love all the old sitcoms on the tele on the buses George n Mildred keeping up appearances, unfortunately I don’t keep up appearances for anyone lol I’m just me, I can’t wait to get my bus pass got another 4 half years to wait, by then there won’t be one lol. But on the other hand I don’t consider myself an old fogey I don’t dress like one, I like to think I dress quite modern but certainly not mutton as lamb

What's wrong with being an old fogey? Should we be whining on twitter about being persecuted for being fogeys?

I'm a fogey and proud. Should we have a fogeys march sometime? In our raincoats and sensible shoes of course and taking care to avoid blocking the road. We could have a mass tea and scone picnic afterwards before using our bus passes to get us all home before it's dark.

CBBL Wed 02-Oct-19 17:39:51

Me too, in most respects. Don't care for elasticated waistbands, though - I have to put a belt on everything, as I hate having to "hitch" things up (I've even "made" belt loops for trousers and skirts with part elasticated waists)! I don't feel "dressed" unless I am wearing a jacket or wrap when going out (even to the shops). Sodapop - I'm a MEGA book fan (despite having been given two Kindles). Yes, I'm definitely an old fogey!

Conni7 Wed 02-Oct-19 17:39:44

Dictionary definition of a fogey: "a dull old-fashioned person". Where does that leave us all? Old-fashioned yes, but dull definitely not!

cassandra264 Wed 02-Oct-19 17:30:53

I admit to meeting nearly all the definitions of old fogeyness as previously described. And I now have a warm sense of belonging - when earlier this week I was feeling extremely dispirited that I could no longer keep pace with change, and probably needed to be thrown out with the rubbish. Thank you, ladies!

I can even start to think I am doing my bit for society, allowing my AC's generation to feel superior. Self confidence in the workplace (which I am no longer part of)
- as well as outside it - can be a wonderful thing - if tempered with a dash of humility/compassion as well as expertise. It can help to change the world for the better.

So now, as an old fogey with arthritis, I graciously accept help carrying heavy cases; let someone assist me when I have problems with the computer instead of struggling to sort it out by myself; and do not hesitate, now I am no longer competing in any arena, to say what a wonderful job someone is doing (if they are) or to tell some young person who has dressed up for an occasion, that s/he looks fantastic.

Now I am going to put on my slippers and eat my dinner on a tray in front of the television.smile

Criticality Wed 02-Oct-19 17:19:07

MissAdventure after reading your post about taking pictures of the particularly bad ones and picturing stooping old fogeys in slippers, pinnies and old cardigans I realised you were talking about potholes!

angie95 Wed 02-Oct-19 16:20:43

Yes, definitely, I like peace , comfort, I like Autumn , it's not too hot, I'm forgetful, I don't like any reality tv and still laugh at Dads Army and Only Fools and Horses!

Jue1 Wed 02-Oct-19 16:19:28

None of that is being an old fogey. It’s just common sense and comfort.
An old fogey is stuck in their own time zone and they do not embrace change or difference.
They avoid technology and all things modern.
I’m not saying I’m all this but I do try.. it’s called being alive.

whywhywhy Wed 02-Oct-19 16:16:27

I love being an old fogey! I get my pyjamas and dressing gown on early on a night. Wear slippers when I am in the house. Knit, knit and more knit. I never go out and drive when it is dark. I love Radio 2 all the time. I watch all the gameshow quiz programmes. Also I cut out all the money off vouchers that I can find. I moan like mad at everything and who cares I have got to this age so I can!

pen50 Wed 02-Oct-19 15:57:24

Sorry, I'm 63 but definitely doing my best to embrace my inner 16 year old.

Actually, scrub that, 6 year old.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 02-Oct-19 15:55:54

Here's another one - if I walk in to a shop and the music is too loud I walk back out again.

Bridgeit Wed 02-Oct-19 15:44:50

Thankyou Guieneagirlp, and well done you for keeping so fit.

Gemini1789 Wed 02-Oct-19 15:29:58

That was for Booksnbeer. Sorry it’s out of sync.

Gemini1789 Wed 02-Oct-19 15:27:31

A pinny is short for pinafore or apron. ?
Did you mean that or was it rhetorical like ‘ What’s sex ? Can’t remember ! ‘

Feelingmyage55 Wed 02-Oct-19 15:12:42

I have a hot water bottle, take a flask of tea when I go out for the day, still use cash for small purchases, repair clothes, use loose tea, bar soap, knit and read the P——— F——-. But I don’t think I am an old fogey, still love to dance, follow my sport, wear up to date clothes, use an iPad and kindle. I think I might be an old fogey from 7 pm to 7 am - not during the day yet.
