(What’s a fogey anyway ? Anyone know ? )

I mute the tv during the ads
I like my house warm
I avoid being on the road in the school run
I like quiet
I love good manners.

I like your reply Bridgeit me too plus always taking my tray back with my cup and plate on in Costa and always throwing my used tissues in the bin, I do not see why staff should do this plus I always return the newspaper to the rack, I hate how people leave their table in a mess. I bike 80 or over miles per week so enjoy trying not to be a fogey yet. I am fitter than my 27 year old daughter,

Am I an old fogey? hmm
I use my bus pass - to get to work.
I use bar soap (and shampoo/conditioner) and have my milk delivered to the doorstep - but for environmental reasons.
I love to read actual books - but also use Kindle and iPad.
I don't have slippers - but do wear 'indoor' shoes in the house.
I make my tea with a tea bag in a mug - but use a pot and loose tea for visitors.

I suspect being an 'old fogey' is related more to a state of mind than to activities. I know people who were born 'old fashioned' (I'm slightly that way myself), but there are others who could never be considered such no matter how old they become.

Yes ,after reading some of this lovely comments I realize I also belong to the OF club,I had my first flu jab yesterday I had gone to the chemist to collect my repeat prescription for overactive thyroid tablets and assistant asked me if I would like one as I was now 65.I always wear slippers because I am terrified of accidentally stepping on a spider!I wear a pinny when cooking /bakingbecause I am fed up of spashing my clothes .I detest reality programmes with so called celebs,I have watched Gardeners World since I lived with my mum and Dad .I had a butter fish but have now given up butter due to high cholesterol.I tell my daughter off for constantly looking at her phone and remember my parents telling me how they went to a dance ,the pictures and had fish and chips all for less than a shilling and tell my daughter that I got paid fifteen shilling and 3 pence for my first Saturday job when I was 15.

I do love words and couldn't resist finding out where the expression had its origins; this is the most comprehensive explanation I could find: Old Fogey

I was waiting for Gabriella to contribute...thank goodness!

LondonGranny I love your lavender water and your ink. Those are truly lovely things from the recent past. I use soda crystals in my washing which really works, is very cheap and is environmentally ok I think. Also I tell my children/grandchild off when they write "Yeah". Grrr... that does annoy me. My DS tells me that the word now appears in predictive text. Can you believe it!

For those who “tut” in the library
Please try not to. Libraries all over the country are desperately trying to remain open. They are mainly run by volunteers, largely self funding and are intended to be welcoming to all.
‘No sush’ policies are in place in most community libraries who are now trying to become the the hub of the communities they serve.
Thank you

I am 87 - of course I must be an Old Fogey BUT I have my marbles, understand technology, my children don’t knock me, I still do my own housework, do Twitter, eBay, email, What’s App etc. Am I a Fogey at all?

Harmonygranny Wed 02-Oct-19 13:46:05

I was an old fogey from the age of six....?

Booksnbeer Wed 02-Oct-19 13:39:49

I’m not sure if I’m an old fogey or not as I’ve hated most of these things since I was in my 50’s haha! I only watch tv an hour a day as it’s too noisy. I hate traffic and I live in a small town. I don’t get cold often but hubby does so keeps the heat up in winter and I keep the AC up in summer. I love to read so like quiet....hubby can’t stand quiet so goes in the garage with the radio. But if I get with my girlfriends and wine we get VERY loud ? I wear slippers unless I go out and love technology and am very good at it. I love dogs and puppies and noisy fun with them but don’t like people much. Maybe I’m not a fogey but a curmudgeon! Love reading all your stories. By the way, I’m from stateside...what is a pinney??

I am an old fogey until I go to a rock concert (which is not that often) but I bought a pair of elastic trousers last week, can’t wear heels anymore, eat very frugally, and save plastic bags like my mum did. And of course i now knit before dark and am currently reading Poldark!

chris8888 Wed 02-Oct-19 13:20:27

Me too do most of the above and take my trolley to the town. Library books are heavy lol.

Mcrc Wed 02-Oct-19 13:16:52

I guess I am a "young" old fogey but I love handwritten letters and thank you notes.

Shirls52000 Wed 02-Oct-19 13:09:01

Definitely not an old fogey and will be fighting old fogeydom to the grave. At 62 I live loud rock music, going to concerts, eating and drinking good food and wine and travelling, have just returned from sailing stound the Turkish coast on s Gulet and off to Ecuador and Galapagos in 4 weeks. Age is just a number, I m ticking all my bucket list things off as life is too short not to xx

I did look at the TV listings for this evening before going out and now feel very excited about coming home. Does that count as old fogeyness?

Kartush Wed 02-Oct-19 13:01:09

I am half and half I guess, I don’t like the chilly weather but don’t own slippers, socks or bare feet at home..... I love technology, have pc, iPad, iPhone and kindle, love loud music, teenagers and noisy kids but like a bit of quiet me time as well.
Husband and I usually eat in front of the tv but only dinner.

Horatia Wed 02-Oct-19 12:57:02

I preferred the presenters of yesteryear and quiz shows to those we have today. If I'm cold I place a hot water bottle beside me in my chair, a little portable radiator. I do like using my computer and mobile though. I have been missing my Carmen rollers lately. Revel in being an old fogey at times.

Rosina Wed 02-Oct-19 12:54:37

Radio. typing lessons a must ...

Rosina Wed 02-Oct-19 12:53:49

Oooooh yes! Absolutely a paid up member of old fogeyness. Loose leaf tea and strainer, bar soap, cotton bed linen, dark wood furniture (am I the only person in Britain who likes dark furniture?) Gallantry, flawless manners, letter writing, Nivea, Handel, Bach, reading in bed at a reasonable hour, Radiuo 4....you have probably all 'nodded off' by now.
I aso love my conputer, ipad, ipod, contactless cards, mobile, and the young - who keep me so.

Jodieb Wed 02-Oct-19 12:48:06

Well, I was going to put 'I certainly am not!' But after reading the first few and having a giggle I thought, 'well maybe I am, then!'

Mealybug Wed 02-Oct-19 12:45:48

I'm partly old fogey lol, I'm tech savvy and would be lost without my computer, like to follow football and keep up with my grand children. However I don't go out much, like the soaps and hate bad manners and bullying. I also hate shopping so only buy my comfy clothes online.

Pantglas2 Wed 02-Oct-19 12:29:44

I’m the same sheilasue, I take the best out of my grandparents, my dad’s generation, my own, my daughter’s and now my grandchildren’s and enjoy it all.

I also have my standards and won’t drop them just to be thought of as ‘young’! How sad would that be.....at my age!

Sheilasue Wed 02-Oct-19 12:22:53

Hate fogey and for that matter old. But I do a lot of the above apart from wearing crocs, old baggy trousers when I go out, indoors yes. Love my bus pass and the trains into London which are free too.
Age is just a number to me it’s how I feel on the day.

hopstone Wed 02-Oct-19 12:16:23

Spot on, I totally agree Lilyflower
