Well deserved IMO, we need more & more people to get on board with this.

I for one am not as aware & as active as I should be with regard to what I buy & what I throw away , recycle etc ,etc

Listening to her speeches & efforts helps me to remind me that I could to do better.

Whether we're heading for devastating warming or drastic cooling, we need to clean up our planet regardless.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 20:34:10

we are at the beginning of a mini ice age (maunder minimum) as characterised by wildly fluctuating temperatures ie very hot to very cold to very hot with no period of time in which to adapt. Not to forget that our lifetime length is no time compared to earth time

Enough from me anyway, I am not about to give a lecture. However I do think that this young teenager is being used by adults with an agenda and the prognosis for her future mental health cannot be good. Unfortunately she is dragging the mental health of countless youngsters down with her.

11 year old DGD has been having real anxiety about this too.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 20:28:43

You know what? I can't be arsed to get into argument on this.

I'm sure you are an extremely well read, highly qualified scientist craftyone. There are still some scientists who don't quite keep up.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 20:25:54

Oh no! That's not good.

Oopsminty Thu 12-Dec-19 20:23:19

I think she's achieved a lot by getting the whole world talking about her.

I wish that my somewhat dramatic grandson wasn't so involved with her message though.

He's 10 and is experiencing sleepless nights, worrying that we're all about to fry

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 20:21:45

craftyone I don't think anyone is denying that solar activity can affect temperatures on earth and can cause them to fluctuate over long periods of time.
However, that, combined with manmade activity, is accelerating the process.

My SIL is of the opinion, however, that all this could precede a period of global cooling with disastrous effects.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 20:18:49

I don`t need to read up on the science gonegirl. I am a scientist

I am not out to convince anyone. You should perhaps know that scientists deal with facts and not airy fairy hysteria

Greta is a good example to all the children and young people whose only ambition is to be famous (without working out famous for what)

She does have passion for her cause and does not seem motivated by fame.

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 20:11:56

I’m not talking about pollution! Somehow the flat earthers persist

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 20:02:22

Thank God the denyers don't matter anymore. The science is talking.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 19:37:53

This climate is not occurring naturally. Read up on the science.

JenniferEccles Thu 12-Dec-19 19:18:03

Entirely right craftyone but some take some convincing.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 19:09:11

oh dear mrtjgran you are getting confused, pollution and climate change are different entities. Pollution is man made. Climate change occurs naturally. Climate change is complicated but the driver is the sun. Pollution is driven by man

Sorry to say she rather grated on me. The "You stole my childhood" was what did it.

Someone on my Facebook feed posted images of her and that quote, followed by pictures of child soldiers, children forced to work in mineral mines etc, with a comment/caption along the lines of "whose childhood has really been stolen?

Yes, she's passionate and makes some good points, but...........hmm

Bridgeit Thu 12-Dec-19 19:04:28

She would be more likely to suffer & be stressed if she could not pursue her passion.

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 19:02:26

There are a very very very few dissenting scientists but the overwhelming majority see human activity as causing or exacerbating climate change.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 18:57:43

marjgran, time for some teaching from a scientist perhaps? would you like to know a bit about maunder minimum and sunspots?

ExperiencedNotOld Thu 12-Dec-19 18:54:12

I feel pity for the child. Pushed out seemingly as the puppet of others, without any apparent chaperone or mentor. It’ll end badly, I fear, with a mental health crisis.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 18:51:52

marjgran, no you don`t know my qualifications. Would geophysics and oceanography do?

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 18:31:40

Phloembundle (that is quite a handle!) you are so right!

Phloembundle Thu 12-Dec-19 18:26:32

The aim has been achieved regardless of anyone's suspicions about her, because more people are talking about climate change.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 18:01:29

People are more important. That's my stance. But we can try to look after both! smile

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 17:58:05

hmm
If we're causing all this we should be concerned about the animal world who are at our mercy.

Yes, I was right next to some of the fires

Marjgran Thu 12-Dec-19 17:56:54

Leyburn - another “scientist”. What an expert lot you are. Greta’s appeal is that she highlights the science, she does not make it her opinion. All power to her stirring things up. If she does nothing else for the rest of her life she has been a catalyst and a force for good.
