Well deserved IMO, we need more & more people to get on board with this.

I for one am not as aware & as active as I should be with regard to what I buy & what I throw away , recycle etc ,etc

Listening to her speeches & efforts helps me to remind me that I could to do better.

Think about it GG

sarahellenwhitney Thu 12-Dec-19 16:41:20

Why no mention and notably absent from Miss Thunbergs speech was reference to the ever increasing growth of the worlds population estimated by 2030 to be 8 billion. As one journalist pointed out on listening to this speech 'Until we control this population growth anything else we do will make any difference'.

JenniferEccles - didn’t realise you are a climate scientist! Craftyone is, too! Excuse the sarcasm but it is likely you know diddly squat. Greta has mobilised interest and a movement. Good for her. Unusual people do unusual things. It is her following that gives her the power, want to snipe at all of them, too?

Yehbutnobut Thu 12-Dec-19 16:39:54

Apparently she is being pilloried in some sections of the media as a picture has emerged of her wearing one...at 14 months.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:39:44

It's the use of oil that is the main reason for the danger to the planet. Petrol, diesel and suchlike.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:37:28

Don't understand the link between Greta T and Shemima Begin. confused

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 16:37:22

It would be a start in cleaning up the planet!

They either go into landfill or are burnt which produces fuel but also greenhouse gases.

Add wet wipes to disposable nappies.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:35:24

How would banning disposable nappies help rescue the planet? confused

Yehbutnobut Thu 12-Dec-19 16:34:31

Yes, it must also have been an enormous decision for a 15-year to leave her family and join ISIS. I wonder if those who are so ‘concerned’ for this young girl/woman show the same ‘concern’ for Shamina Begum.

Either both were old enough to make their own decisions or neither are.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 16:33:45

I don't expect there was a huge amount of food available on those boats, and the round of events she is undertaking must be demanding.

Bet she will make up for it once she is home. (Hope she's gonna be home for Christmas. I know she is joining a Friday school strike in Italy on the way back)

Yehbutnobut Thu 12-Dec-19 16:28:12

This thread will say so much about posters and where they stand on 1) the environmental and 2) young activists.

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 16:26:38

faux concern for Gref's wellbeing

My concern was not false, I was quite shocked at how thin and strained she looked. This has been an enormous thing for a 16 year old to undertake and I think it is all taking its toll on her.

I understand about the trolling too as my DD agrees with Greta absolutely and has received her share of ridicule for her views.

4allweknow Thu 12-Dec-19 16:25:41

I think there can be a lot of us shouting about global warming and good for GT. Apart from sailing using wind power all the time the real problem is how to stop/reverse the damage and as far as I know GT hadn't come up with the solutions. I would live her to talk about banning disposable nappies. Her popularity may take a plummet!

Callistemon Thu 12-Dec-19 16:21:45

GrannyGravy
Yes, I had heard of Boyan Slat and his work but I must admit his name didn't spring instantly to mind.

There are many 'Boyan Slats' out there, working tirelessly and using their inventive brains and scientific knowledge to try to improve the situation.

However, with the expected demand for electric vehicles requiring batteries, the expectation is that the oceans will be plundered for minerals.
Who know what damage this could cause?

Chardy Thu 12-Dec-19 16:18:51

Like quite a few people on here, I'm shocked by the vitriol shown towards this girl, and by the ignorance about her disability. After a lifetime teaching teenagers, my knowledge of Asperger's and other forms of autism only relates to those I've met, they all seemed so different; but all found communication, especially eye contact, even more of a struggle than their peers.
Getting any teenager to do what you want them to is well nigh impossible (personally I think that's even more true of autistic kids) so I don't think she's been manipulated, but then I've never met her.

craftyone Thu 12-Dec-19 15:33:04

she is a manipulated puppet, she has no answers, her eyes are dead and she is dressed to look like 12 when she is almost 17. Her parents should be prosecuted for child abuse

Yes the climate has been changing since the earth was formed. Nothing new now but yet again people getting ever richer by scare mongering . Try not to confuse pollution with climate change

Greciangirl Thu 12-Dec-19 15:25:18

Maybe a trip to China would be a good idea.

Has she not noticed or heard about the noxious gases polluting their atmosphere.

Also, how is she keeping up with her school work I wonder.

Sorry, I’m not a fan, and yes, I do recycle.

JenniferEccles Thu 12-Dec-19 15:11:14

SaraHellen is absolutely correct.

The climate has been changing for thousands of years, We have had periods of warming and cooling, long before humans were even around , let alone be blamed for it.

I’m not denying we are in a period of change now .

What I do question is how much of the change is due to human activity when clearly as we have seen ,it has happened before .

Ellianne Thu 12-Dec-19 15:01:10

Beg your pardon, she is 16 almost 17.

Ellianne Thu 12-Dec-19 14:59:45

I thought rosecarmel made some valid points and didn't bitch about the girl at all.

None of us could have achieved this at 17 precisely because there was no internet and the media weren't as hungry for stories about celebrities or young people in those days. In fact most of our schools and teachers would for many reasons have put a stop to such precocious flaunting of a message. She is a product of her Time .... no pun intended.

lizzypopbottle Thu 12-Dec-19 14:37:27

Isn't she already at least 16 years old? Compulsory schooling in Sweden is age 7 - 16 years.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 14:31:19

rosecarmel argue with her message if you like, but don't bitch about the girl herself.

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 14:30:02

that to nannyme

Gonegirl Thu 12-Dec-19 14:29:45

Oh God! Are you seriously suggesting we do without paper now? grin

rosecarmel Thu 12-Dec-19 14:25:18

Since when are people who offer critiques trolls? And since when is anyone who steps into the global limelight exempt from being disagreed with? Child or not? Whose future is she stealing with her shame and blame method of communication? There's a climate crisis- But the smugness is counterproductive and psychologically toxic-
