Bloody football!

Evening all,

Just come through to the sitting room after supper, and find that from 7.30 until 10.00 BBC 1 are showing bloody football!

That's not what I pay my licence fee for. Fortunately Mr P isn't a football fan, so it won't be on here.

The rest of the BBC offerings for this evening aren't exactly inspiring either.........

Suppose I'd better get the tin helmet out and duck behind the sofa, and wait for those who are pro the game to start saying that there isn't enough football on tv etc.

I have no interest in football but I feel it is quite churlish to begrudge football fans a chance to watch on terrestrial tv, especially older fans who can not afford sky.
There is plenty of choice on other channels or do as I do and record favourites for when I can’t find anything to watch.
We all on here have tablets, laptops etc so bbc -player or itv hub is available to us all.

On whose side?

popsis71 Tue 07-Jan-20 10:40:19

Interesting Dumpling - I have long thought that football on the telly serves the same function as the Roman Games did -- keeps the populace contented and "on side".

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:24:32

I've just tackled Antarctica- blue and lighter blue!
I'm sure some pieces are missing even though it was still sealed.

MerylStreep Tue 07-Jan-20 10:19:39

Off topic, I know, but did anyone see Valerie Singleton on House of Games? I was slightly embarrassed for her, she didn't seem to understand what was going on. In the last round she just sat back with her arms folded ? I wonder if she understands that she has another 4 to go.

Slight change of subject, can i ask someone which Midsomer was on last night, we have had 4 new episodes here so far and I wondered if there are any more.
They were on before Christmas on Flemish 1.

Callistemon I’d love to help! My mum had a huge world jigsaw with countries capitals. My favourite bit was finding the bits of Madagascar. I still remember Antananarivo -the capital.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:08:39

Come and help with this jigsaw please, Mollygo
It's a world map, tiny pieces. There is a lot of blue!
I was helping DH with it and caught Only Connect on catch-up.

Mollygo Tue 07-Jan-20 10:06:05

Jigsaws or puzzles are my antidote to football, I can do them whilst not watching but still be there to appreciate his excitement about the goals, though to be fair my DH only watches Liverpool. Monday is my favourite night with all the quizzes especially Only Connect.

Scottiebear Tue 07-Jan-20 10:05:27

Neither DH or myself football fans. But can usually find something on Sky to watch instead. However, I will take this opportunity to say that I have never known the TV to be so poor over Christmas holidays. Apart from a Christmas Carol, which was excellent, we struggled to find anything to watch.

This discussion has been on for years.. all the BBC channels and they have to disrupt BBC1... why can`t they have a sports channel, and leave regular programmes where they are...

KatyK Tue 07-Jan-20 09:47:07

I hate football and my DH is addicted to it. Fortunately we have two TVs.

Maggiemaybe Tue 07-Jan-20 09:15:43

We watched Only Connect and University Challenge as usual last night, then DH watched the second half of the match. The wrong half for a Yorkshireman, apparently. smile

It doesn’t bother me. We’ve only one TV set but there’s plenty to do apart from watching it and we can record anything these days. And it is the FA Cup, when the small clubs and far-from-overpaid talented players get their chance to shine.

Oopsminty Tue 07-Jan-20 08:32:14

No football in this house

But there's so many channels available now one can always find something

There are many football fans who will be pleased to see a match on terrestrial TV

I love tennis and adore the Wimbledon coverage

But many complain about that

charlie2753 Tue 07-Jan-20 08:30:52

Liverpool fan so well happy at the moment. ⚽️?

NfkDumpling Tue 07-Jan-20 08:18:27

I think football is shoved down our throats to take our minds of everything else. And now the media have discovered womens’ football they seem to think that it’ll appease women who don’t usually watch. Soon we’ll all be addicted and glued to screens watching sport and not asking awkward questions.

Midsomer was good last night, the third murder was quite late in coming.

Sara65 Tue 07-Jan-20 08:06:09

Neither of us like football, I admit when it comes to the rugby tournaments you can’t get my husband away from the television!

Midsomer was good though.

sunseeker Tue 07-Jan-20 07:24:08

Why do programmers think that everyone wants to watch or listen to sport every holiday? I don't watch much TV but usually have local radio on all day but so many times I have had to switch it off because of bloody sport!

Billybob4491 Tue 07-Jan-20 06:57:28

I don't watch much TV but I do enjoy football, would not miss watching a match, to get in the mood I wear my football strip, love every minute of it.

Callistemon Mon 06-Jan-20 23:19:55

Why don't they put all sport on BBC3 instead of the absolute rubbish that is on there (does anyone watch it?).

Newquay Mon 06-Jan-20 22:59:44

I just wish there was a separate channel for all sport but not the overpriced SKY one.
I hate to see how sport is so corrupted.
Sports folk should be on basic wage IMHO!
Pity we can’t return to sports folk of old. . .

merlotgran Mon 06-Jan-20 22:58:52

I've been plugged into my laptop this evening. Watched Only Connect then Midsomer Murders. DH had the cheek to complain about me shouting out the (normally wrong) answers during his footy viewing. hmm

I'm good at the missing vowels round though. grin

Fiachna50 Mon 06-Jan-20 22:35:49

Football is a pain in the a**, as are most of the spoilt , overpaid players. Can't be bothered with any of it.

NotTooOld Mon 06-Jan-20 22:09:42

Phoenix - when you find out how Brexit will affect the students can you find out how it will affect the rest of us, please? grin

phoenix Mon 06-Jan-20 21:49:28

I would usually enjoy the quizzes, but my brain aches from being back at work after a 2 week shutdown, trying to catch up on month end reconciliation, doing a VAT return and dealing with a multitude of stuff including emails from o/seas potential students asking how Brexit will affect them!!!!
