Any words or phrases that you can't stand?

An early phrase that I loathe is "can I get" but a more recent one is the word curate which is used in place of collect, or select etc. Recent examples:

The Guardian" the BBC's failure to curate some news event responsibly"

A description of someone's collection of china pig money boxes (once given away free) as being "carefully curated"

A delicatessen which provides "a perfectly curated picnic"

To my mind the misuse of the word devalues the work of museum and gallery curators.

Moorish, it puts me off eating.

I haven’t read every comment so these may well have already been mentioned.....

People saying anti social when they mean unsociable. I hear (and read) it so often.

I also hate ‘Do one’ . What on earth does it mean?

Luckygirl Wed 04-Mar-20 14:03:32

Well - I am fed up with "fed up of"!

SalsaQueen Wed 04-Mar-20 14:49:36

"it's doing my head in"
"Can't get my head around it"
"Run that by me"
"Thinking outside of the box"

I hate all the Americanisms that have crept into the English language.

'The amount of people' has me screaming ' The number of....' at the radio or TV.

Should/could/would of instead of have, and how I loathe the word pensioner - redolent of perms, old macs and moaning.

At Sainsbury’s a couple of days ago, a very young and very new cashier asked me “and how has your day been thus far” !! It was 8.30am!!
Also hate the word ....lavatory....what’s wrong with loo??

Guineagirl Thu 05-Mar-20 11:11:29

Fags, cigs, tats, Corrie, Enders, back in the day,...............................

I dislike the term Snowflake it's just rude and unnecessary
My DS used to say go figure drove me insane and my DD would say mirror mirror when she was a teenager if I ever tried to comment on her behaviourgrin

Bellanonna Thu 05-Mar-20 17:22:58

A million percent. My hairdresser’s latest cliché.

I agree with so many already mentioned.

I do not like the word supper, especially when referring to dinner or tea.

MissAdventure Thu 05-Mar-20 17:38:12

Wow! That's a lot then. grin

Jane10 Thu 05-Mar-20 18:54:32

We have supper every evening! Dinner would be a more formal evening meal and we'd expect to have that if staying at a hotel or invited to a dinner party. Tea would be a cup of tea and a biscuit at about 4 O'clock.
There has been a thread on regional variations of names for meals. Not much agreement!

Callistemon Thu 05-Mar-20 19:41:41

We have dinner every evening.
Quite frankly, I think I will change it to supper as it is quite exhausting to lay the table with damask tablecloth, napkins, silverware and candles each evening.

Not to mention the starching, ironing of tablecloths and napkins and the cleaning of the silverware each day.

Chewbacca Thu 05-Mar-20 19:45:23

Really Callistemon? You told me that your butler did all of that sort of thing! wink

Callistemon Thu 05-Mar-20 19:48:42

I have to give him a day off occasionally, poor old chap! He's even older than me.

Jane10 Thu 05-Mar-20 19:56:39

Doesn't one of the footmen act up to cover your butler's absences? I look on it as training for one or other of them. They're obviously vieing for the top job. Sweet boys.

Callistemon Thu 05-Mar-20 19:59:31

We had to make them redundant, sadly.

Straitened times
We only live in about 10 rooms now in the castle sad

Jane10 Thu 05-Mar-20 22:07:55

Oh dear. Nevertheless, it's important to maintain standards even if you're down to a skeleton staff.

Evie64 Thu 05-Mar-20 22:24:25

Awesome! Hate it

Chewbacca Thu 05-Mar-20 22:44:45

Words I don't like:

Nutrients
Gusset
Moist
Crevice

Don't like saying or hearing them.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 06-Mar-20 09:32:57

The trouble with a skeleton staff is the way the things you throw at them fall through their ribs. Not a pretty sight. DD says it's old-fashioned to throw things at the staff, but how else do you get them to behave?

Moist is horrible, chewbacca, I agree. There are books by Terry Pratchett, whose work I normally enjoy, which I find hard to read because one of the characters is called Moist. Why? confused
