AIBU to ask that DH shuts the back door in this weather. I’m sat here with a cold (or worse!), shivering, clutching a hot water bottle when suddenly the temperature drops.

He has only gone outside and left the @#&@£(+# back door wide open ???

And it’s me who pays the energy bills.

It's not doors in our house but lights!!!! The grandkids in particular leave lights on in empty rooms, OH sees no harm in it but it drives me nuts!

Camy Thu 27-Feb-20 12:16:36

My husband does all of the above, plus he never screws the top of a jar or bottle back on securely after he had used the contents!

We came home yesterday evening and walked into a lovely warm house. My husband followed me in and left the front door as wide open as it can go while he messed round with a bag. He doesn't leave the freezer door open now but I am still neurotic about checking it is properly closed.

The fridge door is often left open.

On the other hand, I have been ill and he was kindness itself.

Got spring hinges and watch the door hit him on the backside when he goes out ??

lefthanded Thu 27-Feb-20 11:58:36

If i go out through the front door (we rarely use the back) then I will leave it open - but our front door has no handle on the outside, it can only be opened with the key. If I go out to the bins, or to get something from the car, then I won’t have my house keys with me.

If there is an outside handle on your back door then it is reasonable to expect him to close it - if it’s key only then it is reasonable to leave it open.

Dottynan, Minnimoon, ANY door or drawer left open in our house!
I've taken photos of the kitchen with every door and drawer open (bar 2), AND the back door to the garden!!
No chance of changing him.
I wonder sometimes if he does it on purpose?

He seems to take pride in it.

Like its proof of his eccentric personality!!!

Anyway you all have my utmost sympathy, its infuriating and freezing in this weather sad Blue face for the cold not sad!!

I am genuinely amazed that so many people have the same issue with their husband. It is a continuing issue for me and yet before we retired I do not remember it being a problem??
Perhaps it’s the smaller budget.. not sure but it drives me bonkers. ?

I had a teacher in Primary school that insisted on the windows in her classroom being open , whatever the weather - years later, she claimed that she had very few pupils off sick with colds and funnily enough, I can't remember feeling cold when in her class!
If anyone left the door open , my dad used to shout out "Put wood in'toil" or ask when you came back whether you were born in a barn!
I also vote for the locking him out for 30 minutes - although that may create a worse row! I'd guess that he doesn't feel the cold as he is moving around whereas you are sitting and no doubt right in the path of the arctic blast!

Dottynan Thu 27-Feb-20 11:44:31

My husband does leave the back door open as he doesn't feel the cold but he also opens the fridge door wide and peruses every shelf and wanders of across the kitchen and back again. I have pleaded with him to close it quickly and not let the cold air but I think it has now become a battle of the wills

bunny17 Thu 27-Feb-20 11:32:46

Know what you mean about energy bills, my dh boils an (unreasonably full) kettle then walks off and leaves it?

Phloembundle Thu 27-Feb-20 11:26:22

Oh how I sympathise. My sister does the same and lets all the f-----g heat out of the house. I tell her again and again. It drives me mad.

endlessstrife Wed 26-Feb-20 18:51:07

To be honest, we have switched places the last few years. We’ve always fought over the thermostat, but now it’s menopausal me turning it down ,and he is cold!

Harris27 Wed 26-Feb-20 18:30:17

Yes same here we should form a club!

JuliaM Wed 26-Feb-20 18:28:53

Its not leaving doors wide open thats the problem here, my OH thinks if he feels warm enough everybody else should be as well, so promptly turns the thermostat down 10 degrees C!
He sits in his chair right at the side of a big radiator, my chair is near the door into the hall way,
I cannot move it as l need to use the nearby plug to operate the rise and recline function, l keep threatening to get the thermostat dial changed for one. That works via my phone, that would stop him interfering for sure, its me who pays the heating bills as well!

anniezzz09 Wed 26-Feb-20 18:21:20

Yep, same here, my husband would like to live in a field I always say. His hands are always icy but he says he hasn't noticed. He doesn't close drawers either.

MiniMoon Wed 26-Feb-20 17:45:36

YANBU!

I live with a man who doesn't know how to shut a door, any door.
I'm constantly springing up out of my comfortable seat to close the door.
Perhaps it's because he was brought up on a farm.

annep1 Wed 26-Feb-20 16:30:41

It's annoying when the door is left open in freezing cold weather no matter who pays the bill.

vampirequeen Wed 26-Feb-20 16:21:30

Today I opened all the windows to let some fresh air in. I don't feel the cold like normal people. I only realised I'd left them open for longer than I'd intended when my poor DH turned blue.

ayse Wed 26-Feb-20 16:16:11

My DH is just the same, leaving the door open in all weathers. It makes me very cross but there seems to be a totally blank look when I complain.

What is it about folk who don’t shut doors when it’s cold. I also pay the heating bill. Grrrr!??

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 26-Feb-20 16:15:30

Fit a spring loaded door closer that will close the door after him, if you’re lucky it will smack him on the backside as he goes out!

Barmeyoldbat Wed 26-Feb-20 16:12:11

I think a lot of men are missing the heat gene. Mr Barmey not only leaves the back door open when he is working outside but has tried unsuccessfully, to be controlling with the heating.

Ginny42 Wed 26-Feb-20 15:49:16

I live in a barn anyway! grin

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 15:24:42

It was the front door the other day.
The thing was - he'd come indoors again!!

SalsaQueen Wed 26-Feb-20 14:45:50

When he goes out (to his shed or wherever), shut the door and lock him out grin until he's a bit more thoughtful grin

Kalu Wed 26-Feb-20 14:27:42

Oh dear, I do this on occasion and DH does exactly the same as yours paddyanne?

I nip out the back door to do something which would only take seconds then I notice something which catches my attention, forgetting the door has been left open. I often return to a closed door and another, for goodness sake you’re letting the cold in. Must do better.
