I’m 70 in December 2020.
My husband ( quite confidently) says I’m in my 70th year now and that this is the norm. ?
I say I’m not as I’m in my 69th .
I agree I will be in my 70th year this December - God willing . I’m not touchy about age btw .
He’s 74 now and will be 75 in November and thinks he’s in his 75 th year presumably . I’ve had to drop the subject as it’s so petty . Any guidance O wise sybils of Gransnet ? He won’t argue with you .

You're in your 70th year and he is in his 75th year.

However, tell him as you are only 69 you'll be allowed out and he will have to go into isolation.

He is right. The year you were born (0 - 1) is your first. Take it from there and 69 - 70 is your 70th. I am in my 80th year now.

SirChenjin Sun 15-Mar-20 17:58:31

I’m with the others who say your husband’s right - sorry!

Daisydoes Sun 15-Mar-20 17:25:12

He may well be technically right...... But I would still be in my 69th year if I were you!
may explain why I am still 59 ??

Daisymae Sun 15-Mar-20 17:12:58

I used to have this discussion with my mum. Frequently. When you are born you are in your first year. So yes, your DH is correct you are in your 70th year.

endlessstrife Sun 15-Mar-20 17:07:14

When you were in your first year, you were a year old at the end of it. Now you are in your 70th year, and 70 years old at the end of it?.

Maggiemaybe Sun 15-Mar-20 17:02:21

So I’m 65, but in my 66th year. That’s cheered me up - it somehow sounds as if I’m so much nearer to getting my pension. smile

POGS Sun 15-Mar-20 16:36:46

Oh bugger you have, all got me thinking. ?

Patsy70 Sun 15-Mar-20 16:10:26

You are definitely in your 70th year, no argument!

Baggs Sun 15-Mar-20 15:42:21

amberdog, you have already lived for 69 years by the time of your last birthday. Think about a baby: when it reaches its first birthday it has lived for one year already. On its first birthday it enters its second year which comes to an end on its second birthday.

So you are, as you husband says, in your seventieth year.

There must be thousands of 60s, 70s and even 80's helping out with family members and very elderly parents (90s/100s). Don't quite know how to work this out. Can't really leave elderly mother without food etc? (Sorry bit off subject here).

crazyH Sun 15-Mar-20 14:54:03

You are 69, until your next Birthday.

Gummie Sun 15-Mar-20 14:50:26

He is correct. But don’t tell him ?

Oopsadaisy3 Sun 15-Mar-20 14:38:37

You are in your 70 th year, but you are still in your Sixties, you’ll be in your 70s until you are 80.
So you are both right.

Squiffy Sun 15-Mar-20 14:37:46

Thank you Monica! ?

Septimia Sun 15-Mar-20 14:34:26

Yes, in your 70th year, but you haven't completed it so you're not actually 70 (complete) years old until your birthday.

lemongrove Sun 15-Mar-20 14:31:03

Elegran you have toilet rolls?! Share them immediately.?

M0nica Sun 15-Mar-20 14:27:45

Squiffy the perfect solution, as well as being correct.

Bellanonna Sun 15-Mar-20 14:15:30

Good analogy Elegran

Squiffy Sun 15-Mar-20 14:15:19

Fence-sitting here! You’re in your 70th year, but not yet in your seventies! ???

Bellanonna Sun 15-Mar-20 14:14:23

Not as bad as being in your 80th, Nina ☹️

Elegran Sun 15-Mar-20 14:12:06

answer these questions one at a time.

1) Imagine you buy two toilet rolls, put one away in the cupboard and hang up the other to use. Until you reach the end of that one, are you on your first roll ?

2) When you were a baby of a few months, were you in your first year until you reached your birthday?

3) When you were one and a half, were you still in your first year or halfway through your second?

POGS Sun 15-Mar-20 14:11:58

amberdog.

I would say the same as you.

You will be in your 70's after your 70th birthday in December.

Funny what get's us going off on one ??

ninathenana Sun 15-Mar-20 14:10:29

Sorry Oops crossed posts.

ninathenana Sun 15-Mar-20 14:09:47

Yes 70th year.
You were drawing breath for 12 mths before your 1st birthday so after that you were in your 2nd year.
Thanks for reminding me that I'm in my 67th year grin
