Spitting - what’s the legal situation?

Is it against law to spit? I was taking a walk on the local heath today and a man walking past me hawked and spat right near me. If he hadn’t been so thuggish looking I would have confronted him, but didn’t dare. Couldn’t believe someone would do that at the moment

That is disgusting but not sure it is illegal. I just wish people, mostly men I think , would stop doing it. It is anti-social.

There have been prosecutions under the anti litter legislation.
Hard to police though as it would have to be seen by authorities or CCTV.

I can remember when I was young seeing notices attached to lamp posts stating that spitting was against the bye laws.

I think footballers have a lot to answer for here! They spit constantly on the pitch and with tv coverage people see it and think it is o.k.
