Are we all really not having our hair done?

I am going to colour my roots today with Nice N'Easy - My friend, who is a hairdresser, usually does it for me and I haven't done it myself for years! I've been using a brown root spray but I can't put it off any longer. I am strangely nervous

Just seen on BBC Breakfast that some Barbers are still cutting hair and charging double.
I think that those who dictate fashion should advocate the 70s long hair look. We already have the midi dresses!

I've always found Nice n Easy to be a good one. Very simp!e to use. Good luck if you decide to go ahead with this.

I’m torn between seeing what my natural grey / dark Hair looks like (so admired on others) and going to a big supermarket for a box dye. If I could find a good one For ash blonde it would save me a small fortune in time and money at the hairdressers

All my life I have moaned about how slowly my hair grows.
In 2017, I did 'Shave for a Cure' and went bald.

It took a year before it was long enough to be described as 'a Judi Dench'.

I've been locked down in isolation since 20th March and for some reason my diabolical follicles have decided to speed up so that now it's necessary to wear my silly, wispy hair in a ponytail on top of my head.

Grrrr

Joanna Lumley made me laugh on one of her travel programmes.
She had obviously had to have a medical before she set off and said that the doctor had written on the report:
'Can cut own toe nails'


And own hair too, then. Very impressive.

I had a phone call from the chap who comes and cuts my hair yesterday. Just checking that I was OK and saying he isn't likely to be round for a couple of months. I promised I would try not to make too much of a mess of it before he sees me again!

I'm sure other ladies saw Joanna Lumley on with Hollie and Phillip this morning ? I already liked her but now I not only like her more, but have such a respect for her. (She mentioned how much we should appreciate our actors now, especially the new and younger ones as they struggle to find work. On a personal note, my son is a trained actor and I'm afraid these reality shows have slowed down his chances of auditioning for any parts. Anyway, he gave it a go, appeared in a couple of adverts, toured for a week and still has an agent (he has to pay for) but sadly "resting" at the moment. At least he has given it a go).
But what I want to add to this Hair thread is that JL said she has cut her own hair for years and demonstrated how to use scissors successfully. She also said if she can't stand her dark roots growing darker, she just buys a box of colour -dah-dah!!
My husband's hair is actually better now that the skin-head style has grown out and the sticky-up bit at his crown now lies flat! His eye-brows - well, that's another matter

See my name. Says it all (grey stripe, now going on for an inch long, each side of my parting!) I'm not even wearing makeup - have decided to "let it all go"! DH says he hasn't noticed any difference!!!

We noticed yesterday Thomas Schaffer thingy, the lovely weather man , is not looking quite so well shorn. His hair is definitely longer. As for Owain who does the north west weather, he still has an amazing quiff but it is looking decidedly longer and must need tons of hair spray. My own DH has a full head of white hair which grows at a phenomenal speed. He is heading for the Michael Mansfield look, which is ok as he works in the legal sector. He reckons it won't be long before all the men look like they did in the 60s and 70s

Our Prime Minister here in France announced today that if everything goes well, lockdown will end on 11th May.
My hairdresser rang to offer me an appointment on the 12th. (Bring your own mask. ?)
I was originally booked in for the day lockdown started.
It will be lovely to go out without filling in a form.

Soon after I retired I decided to go aux naturelle with regard to colour, and now it is a nice shade of silver grey nearly all over, so no problems about that.
However, I keep my hair short for ease - just brush into shape each morning after shower and that is it. My hair grows (like a week according to one hairdresser I used to go to). Not to complain at my age, so many women are more worried about thinning hair.
Anyway despite regular and often hairdressing visits, I usually 'trim' the top and sides between those visits. I say 'trim' - hairdresser always accuse me of chopping my hair (they are so complimentary, these hairdressers!!).
So, now I am happily trimming or chopping every week or so all over, even the back of my hair and am doing so without any feelings of guilt or worries about comments when I do manage to get it all done professionally again.

You can do everything at home! I wont cut my hair as that's my hairdresser of 20 years job. However as it is long and doesn't need shaping its o.k.

Colour wise I can do that myself! Though I am just sticking to a root smudger at the moment. If this goes on too long I will buy a box on my hairdresser guidance.

Facials, waxing etc. Can will be done at home which I am. Saving some money that way as I will continue it on.

YouTube and Google will give you all the help you need to do it yourself

I’ve been letting the dye grow out for the last couple of years and I’m almost there now. My shoulder length hair is thick, coarse, wavy, has a tendency to frizz, and is the bain of my life at times however it turns out that it’s fairly easy to cut. I sectioned it into four bunches and chopped off about an inch using pinking shears which were the closest to hand when the notion came over me.

I have to say it doesn’t look any worse than when I’ve paid a significant amount of money in a salon although I’m sure a hairdresser would be horrified.

Mine was long to start with and is now even longer - I am quite happy with it. I have always cut the fringe myself.

I used to cut OH's hair, as it was getting very thin and hairdressers always made him look bald. The nice thing about DIY is that you can cut little and often.

I think he does already cut it himself!

I wonder if Boris is managing to cut his own hair?
Will he have darker roots?

I remember in the sixties using a beer shampoo for shiny hair.

Can anyone recommend good thinning scissors please. Mine aren't working very well.

Callistemon I have seen pics of NS from years ago, she has naturally very dark hair, and it wasn’t the short ‘cap’ it is now, and suited her much better.

I thought it probably was.

everyones idea of whats important is different ,I never leave my roots any longer than 3 weeks .I also put makeup on first thing every day.I know its not important in the scheme of things but it is to me .Apart from that just imagine the comments if Nicola Sturgeon had turned up with grey roots ...someone on here was making remarks about her having a moustache last week .She's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't .At least she's on that podium every day and can answer every question asked of her .
