Ten thirty p.m. is a peculiar time for an important announcement.
AIBU to ask you to predict the reason?

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 14:23:49

I haven’t failed to grasp anything and I’ve certainly grasped that you’ve no idea at all about the worth, the number, the
value of the people that you fundamentally want to lock away.

MaggieTulliver Wed 09-Sept-20 14:21:13

If that’s what you think Suzie sobeit. You have failed to grasp the enormous damage that’s being caused to young people, cancer patients (my terminally ill SIL has been denied treatment), the state of the nation’s mental health, our school age children.....the list is endless.

All I’m saying is that the vulnerable should continue to shield and stop blaming other people for being selfish. Covid is not going away.

pollyanna1962 Wed 09-Sept-20 14:19:14

I think its awful, all over again, I'm sensible the whole time but one daughter has 3 kids so in theory me and hubby cant see her, she lives away from us, I'm disabled and he needs to drive me.

Where did I say that people in the shielded group don’t matter? I haven’t for one moment suggested that and there are members of my family in this group. So everyone else should suffer, the economy be brought to its knees and our entire way of be ruined because a small minority are not selfless enough to stay home until this god awful mess has been sorted out?

Have you heard the word community?

It is where people care for and consider others.

So the old do their bit by looking after the very young whilst parents work, the middle aged look after their parents as they age, the young give consideration to those who love and care for them which includes the old who are often a good banking source.

We are all in this together ( who said that?) we should all expect others to act like it.

sparklingsilver28 Wed 09-Sept-20 14:14:46

yes surely major civil unrest is on the cards if the government impose further draconian measures.

The very old, obese etc need to shield and let the rest of us get on with living.

Well no illusions Maggie Tullever - euthanasia via Covid! I certainly would not want to live with your outlook on the sanctity of life. Selfish and horrible.

I think it was to take the sting out of the government proposing to break international law over Northern Ireland that the announcement was made when it was. Matt Hancock got it in the neck from the speaker today for not telling Parliament first. They knew the papers would pick up on group gatherings to hide the news about breaking international law.

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 14:08:07

Read your posts again MT. They are horrible

MaggieTulliver Wed 09-Sept-20 14:05:44

I think people would be less likely to be out spreading it if we had a testing system that worked. Hancock just told everyone that too many well people are having tests - well people are the ones you NEED to have tests. If you’re ill you’re at home not spreading it.

I can’t believe someone so useless without the basic grasp of public health is in charge during a pandemic

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 14:02:08

There are also millions of people ( you know as in human beings) in the group you would so callously deny the right to get on with living MaggieT. Nice

Iam64 Wed 09-Sept-20 13:56:19

Well, that's me told. I don't matter, I'm old and take immune suppressants to control RA. If I get the virus because some selfish B doesn't isolate when they should, goes into my local store and spreads the virus and I die that's ok. I'm old and no doubt the phrase "underlying health conditions" could be used. The fact I've been living with it since my 20's can just be disregarded.

MaggieTulliver Wed 09-Sept-20 13:53:57

The etc includes those with the underlying health conditions we’ve all been told about. The definition of very old is obvious. Denying millions of people essential freedoms is inhumane, untenable and a huge risk to health (not Covid). Those who need to shield should continue to do so but of course if they choose not to that’s their decision.

Lucca Wed 09-Sept-20 13:53:33

Who has relatives coming from all over the world ???

Lucca Wed 09-Sept-20 13:52:15

I get annoyed at the “wellof course they died they had underlying conditions” remark too. Some of those people might have lived for many many years with their underling condition.

sparklingsilver28 Wed 09-Sept-20 13:52:07

Saggi Why Monday MawB2..... would you like your celebration cancelled at the drop of a hat...I’m thinking... wedding...50th anniversary ...25th anniversary...christening....70th, 60th,50th birthdays..... all of which could have relations coming from all over the country or even world!!! How selfish ! Any damage that could be done, has been done. For goodness sake let people hold celebrations that have been a long time planning!

This idiocy the problem! In my village, tourists arriving on our doorstep with no regard for what they bring to the community. The government needs to ban all holiday makers/lets and families travelling to second homes until the virus is under control. Stay at away!

MawB2 Wed 09-Sept-20 13:45:14

Ate you on the right thread Isabel ?

MissAdventure Wed 09-Sept-20 13:44:27

Who decides what is very old?

MawB2 Wed 09-Sept-20 13:44:10

You are hoping for civil unrest are you?

Well be careful what you wish for.
Riots, shootings, looting, food shortages, energy outages, yobs roaming the streets, burning and destroying?

I remember the Brixton riots - not a lot of fun for those living along the route of some of the marchers converging on Brixton.
I remember also trying to drive through Central Birmingham -9(?) years ago, and feeling very afraid.
Be careful what you wish for.

suziewoozie Wed 09-Sept-20 13:41:02

‘The very old, obese etc need to shield and let the rest of us get on with living‘

Well MaggieT that’s told a lot of us - no more living for us. Love the ‘etc‘ btw - includes people of all ages

Sarnia Wed 09-Sept-20 13:40:50

I agree with those who have asked 'Why Monday?' The poor Mayor of Doncaster is pulling her hair out as thousands converge on that area for a few days of horse racing spreading goodness knows what.

Isabel46 Wed 09-Sept-20 13:39:45

Quote Riverwalk - Riverwalk is totally right. The UK government is proposing to break international law - this would be a disaster and would lose any credibility the UK has in the eyes of the world. The government is turning into a bunch of fascists - the Brexiteers among them will be very happy with a No Deal Brexit - the cabinet is a bunch of millionaire Yes-men who will lose nothing. We should all be Very Aware!!

MaggieTulliver Wed 09-Sept-20 13:32:41

Posted before I’d finished....yes surely major civil unrest is on the cards if the government impose further draconian measures. It’s not possible to have zero risk from Covid, just as it’s not possible to have zero risk from dying of cancer or in a car accident.

The very old, obese etc need to shield and let the rest of us get on with living. We all need to continue to be careful but there simply can’t be another lockdown or we’ll never recover from this. And I wish people would stop blaming the young, whose futures have already been blighted.

MaggieTulliver Wed 09-Sept-20 13:27:03

I am hoping for ncivil unrest which will surely

Lucca Wed 09-Sept-20 13:26:53

Id just Like to apologise for all my “quote abuse”

Lucca Wed 09-Sept-20 13:26:09

Ellianne

I'm not surprised. It was surely coming.
I wish pubs had never opened, I wish gatherings had not been allowed, I wish all holidays abroad had been banned etc. etc.
But we have a generation here who would have revolted because they feel they are so entitled. Very few under 35s are going to do as they are told, that doesn't exist any more and the government knows it.
It is what it is, I shall continue to be careful, but I'm not sure I could do Chritsmas without our family together.

Some of us never have that luxury
