Aibu to put the heating on? Have you put yours on yet? This is the first day I've felt chilly. My wall thermometer says it's 20C inside but this is an old house & my feet & hands are cold. I wanted to hold on longer before switching it on but I don't think I can.

The boiler is being serviced next week and that is me done and dusted and ready for winter. I had to wait two months for the sweep who also does stove servicing, its a new stove but I thought I would get him on board from the start

I had to go back to basics a bit this morning, never realised that I still had the summer woollen duvet on, I had a welsh wool blanket on top but kept waking last night, a bit cool. Duvet is now swapped and while at it, I did the bedding in the airing cupboard, all sets are individually packed in their pillowcase, very much easier this way. The wool blanket is now in the ottoman at the bottom of my bed, ready for colder.

I still don`t have the temperatures exactly right, lowered the living room this morning. I think it depends on grey and rain, just looking at it makes me feel cooler

Our radiators come on at 6.30 am for an hour until we’re dressed. Not yet needed it in the evening but our living room faces west and we get the last few hours of sunshine when there is some. Not needed the gas fire on in that room ..... yet.

I have switched mine on from late afternoon for nearly a week now. For some reason my gas bill is cheaper than my electricity and living on my own I am careful re switching off lights.

Must ring the chimney sweep today. It's been on the Really Must List since Lock Down finished but ....

I put the heating properly on yesterday, I have the new (complicated) electronic thermostats that control zones, 5 of them. I changd the time as they were still on winter time and this morning have woken to a warm cosy bedroom, en suite and living room. There are lots of time intervals andtemperatures to set within the thermostat/timer. Its a bit of a daunting task but I also wanted to fully check the heating before the boiler gets serviced next week.

I like an upstairs boost to come on about 5.30am and later it will go lower for the whole day. Sheer luxury and it will stay on now, it won`t come on unless needed and I can switch each zone off by a button press

I have flannelette sheets for our beds when the weather gets colder, lovely to get into. I haven't got duvet back on my bed yet, just the cover and a light bedspread and it's lovely not to be hot in bed. OH has kept his on all summer! Thank heavens we have separate rooms.
It's not too cold here, I have been out chopping back shrubs in the garden this morning, just a tshirt. The chilly wind has dropped.
The aim is if at all possible no turning on the fire until November, always make me think of my Gramph - he wouldn't light the coal fire until November. We haven't used it since March.

I'm just going to put the autumn duvet back on.

I agree Riverwalk.

Why do you stay in that big old house? Is it time to downsize to a modern, warm house or bungalow?

DH has been 'testing' our heating system. It's gone off now but it's taken the chill off the house.

We're not wasteful but we see no point in being cold and miserable in our dotage.

I dread the Winter in our house, it is sooooooo cold! In a heatwave it is ideal, just a little cool. I grew up in an enormous Victorian house where we had ice flowers etched on the windows each morning and at weekends my sister and I would wait to hear the rattle of the coal scuttle before we ventured out from under the covers. I swore when I grew up I would have heat in every room but who could have foreseen the rise in power costs. Every year around this time my DH and I have the Big Row about the Heating! When we dragged our ancient central heating into the twenty-first century DH told the builder we would turn the heat on as we needed it, which as far as he's concerned is when snow is on the ground! We've just had this year's row, I am reduced to tears (at least they're warm). And apparently I only have to ask if I want it on. But, really, it's only September you know. I have MS and when I'm in one position for any length of time and am cold (as at night)I seize up like a rusty old jalopy. Getting downstairs to put the heating on in the morning in Winter is positively hazardous.

That's about one of the saddest posts I've read in a long time.

You have MS, you're cold, and your husband reduces you to tears by dictating when the heating goes on - just why do you put up with this behaviour?

My DH feels cold all the time, he has health issues and is very thin now, no fat to keep him warm! He has the heating on when I don't need it but it is horrible to be cold. I just have to sit in a T shirt and thin trousers! But I have had the underfloor heating on in the conservatory for a couple of nights. I sit in there in the mornings with my coffee and my dogs. Lovely.

oh dear, Bathsheba I hope I am not a bad influence re spending on sheets. I am thinking about lighting my stove soon, I can regulate it now to a gentle warm heat that lasts for hours. There is no sun today and it is going to be grey later

Ooh merlotgran that is a nice fire. I learnt how to light a fire to stop the plug of dense cold air sending smoke into the room. Simple, heat the flu first ie make a pyramid and put a firelighter on the top. I use an electric firelighter and warm the flu with that first

Bathsheba Sun 27-Sept-20 19:39:52

Heating's been on for a couple of days now, washed the bedding today and the winter duvet is now on. Looking forward to snuggling up in bed later with a hot water bottle and my Kindle.

I see flannelette sheets mentioned on this thread - I haven't had them since I was a child (don't ask me why!!), but I now have a strong yearning for them! I couldn't swap my Egyptian cotton duvet covers, but I can just imagine the comfort of a cotton flannelette bottom sheet.

Right, that's it, I'm off to do a bit of online shopping therapy wink

Winter is on its way, I always know when DH screams at my cold feet touching him when I get into bed.

Heating on, candles lit as psychologically I think they might add an extra degree of heat!

EllanVannin Sun 27-Sept-20 19:10:10

Clear sky over the Mersey----damn cold too, sod the bill the heating's on !

merlotgran Sun 27-Sept-20 19:02:58

Woodburner lit for the first time this evening.

Jim-Jams on!

I am surprised how many people play with their heating controls. Our system works entirely on the thermostat all year round, no switching on or off. The thermostat is set at 18 degrees and the heating comes on morning and evening. Very occasionally in really cold weather(temperature below 0) we might put it on for an hour at lunchtime, but usally we do not look at it or adjust it from one years end to another.

glammanana Sat 26-Sept-20 09:17:31

This last week I have put mine on between 5-7pm it warms the bungalow quickly and keeps things toasty for the night, during the afternoon the sun has been flooding the lounge before switching its self off about 4pm then you can notice the difference and need a little boost from the CH.

craftyone Sat 26-Sept-20 09:03:00

I am adapting, yay, enough to go cycling later. The sun is blazing in and will keep the house at a good temperature. Its 6 degrees out but not in my sunny walled garden which is a lot warmer

Grannybuy, these new houses are wonerfully insulated, even between the floors. It sounds as though you are the same as me, underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs and different zones downstairs. Bedroom was 19.7 this morning so there is a definite welcome cooling in the bedrooms, I like it at 18

Missiseff Sat 26-Sept-20 07:37:42

Never understood this. I never turn mine off for any length of time. If I'm cold, whether it's February or June, I put it on. Always found it odd that people don't.

grannybuy Fri 25-Sept-20 23:42:05

My living room and hall is set at 22deg all year, bedrooms 18. The hall floor was warm this morning, so the heating would have come on whenever the temp dropped to 21 during the night. It's a new build, so well insulated. The sun mostly stops the living room from dropping during the day, but overnight is different in winter. I would definitely be switching it on if it wasn't thermostatically controlled though.

I categorically deny any and all allegations that necessary dusting of said thermostat could have changed the temperature setting in any meaningful way
Starblaze you are an inspiration to us all!

Shizam Fri 25-Sept-20 20:43:56

I’m holding off. House is in that mid, it’s definitely not warm, but not yet freezing mode. So saving on bills. And my pathetic gesture to environment. Sure I’ll give in soon though.

NfkDumpling Fri 25-Sept-20 19:16:51

Starblaze

I have noticed perchance, an occasional warming of the house at times I have felt a bit chilly. I do not change the thermostat, the thermostat retains all heating responsibilities and I am innocent of any wrongdoing.

With that in mind:

Good one Starblaze. I shall reserve polishing our thermostat until an opportune (really cold) time.

Lulubelle perhaps it's time to refuse to get out of bed in the mornings until DH has gone downstairs, put the heating on and brought you a nice hot cup of tea.

BlueBelle Fri 25-Sept-20 18:52:38

I live in a big old Victorian house with no heating bar two gas fires one in each main room I can’t put them on yet way too early (money wise) so it’s a jumper hot water bottle and a blanket for me when I sit down in the evenings and a nice high tog duvet and hottie bottle at night
