My xhusband is Japanese. Our younger daughter and her family moved to Tokyo about a month ago as she has a 4 year contract there with her job.
They all had a covid test on arrival at Tokyo airport, results back in an hour. They then travelled to their accommodation and quarantined for 2 weeks although they were allowed to go out to buy food.
We have discussed many times over the last few months why Japan seems to have faired so much better than the UK, 2,000 deaths since the pandemic started.
It is undoubtedly mainly down to culture, as has been mentioned, the Japanese are basically a well behaved race and do what the government tells them. They are not 'touchy feely' and do not hug and kiss when they meet friends and family but keep a respectful distance and give a little bow or nod of the head. Shortly after meeting my then husband to be I spend 18 months living in Japan, this is going back 40 years and everyone wore a mask if they had a cold.
Having said all this, last week my little GS age 13 months had a temperature, my daughter informed work she would be working from home until he had had a covid test and kept their other son age 4 home from school. Apparently the school expressed surprise that they were keeping him home just because his brother had a temperature. |The test proved negative luckily. Also she said they don't seem to have the 2 metre rule there, more like 1 metre if that!
Unfortunately the numbers seem to now be going up, due to the onset of colder weather perhaps.
The Japanese are also apparently extremely good at treating people with pneumonia, maybe another reason for fewer deaths.
Baby Reindeer - anyone watched it?
If I had to choose.....just one day
