On my daily walks I can't help noticing that about two out of three male runners are wearing little skimpy shorts with woolly tights. Why not wear joggers or leggings? When did this start and WHY?

I’m not sure why you are bothered what runners are wearing. I bet they don’t care what you wear!

Greyduster Sun 31-Jan-21 11:17:21

He also wears shorts over his ‘skins’.

Greyduster Sun 31-Jan-21 11:15:43

Sorry Blossoming crossed post - me on the wrong page!!

Greyduster Sun 31-Jan-21 11:15:00

ShropshireLass Under Armour is a brand of sportswear. My GS wears some of their stuff, along with a few other brands. He’s a cross country runner.

Madwoman11 Sun 31-Jan-21 11:11:40

I believe they are called Skins, and worn by many sports people to keep warm.

Damdee Sun 31-Jan-21 11:10:42

Don't look at them if you don't like it. I see all sorts of get-ups round here. The runners probably think I look ridiculous in all the stuff I wear to keep warm when out walking - though I doubt they'd care enough about it to put a post up!

Tights under shorts? What's wrong with that? You'd have something to complain about if you saw a workman in a skirt over his tights as I have. He apologised when I commented and said he preferred wearing women's clothing but was not a transvestite, just a man who likes skirts. So long as he does his work properly and well, why worry? Its a free country, I told him.

Lynnabelle

They are called ‘base layers or skins’ and are thermal so keep them warm. My grandchildren wear them for football to keep them warm. They give more freedom of movement than wearing track suits and keep the muscles warm. Better to have shorts over the top than not I would think for modesty’s sake. ?

Thank you Lynnabelle
I made the same point on Thursday and was very surprised that no other Grans of football or rugby-playing GC seemed to share my opinion.
Reassuring to know there’s two of us! ⚽️??

Even worse is the Lycra-leggings-with-no-shorts option. We have many 'older' cyclists round here who opt for this. Not so bad when they are in the saddle, but then they pop into the local shops and pubs (well they did before lockdown) proudly displaying their lunch boxes to the public blush !!!

At this stage we are allowed to find everything and anything irritating.
Lol.
I find OPs post uplifting because its given a good read.

UnderArmour is a brand name. Running tights are footless but never seen them called leggings. I used to run a lot when I was still able to, fond memories.

GrammaH Sun 31-Jan-21 10:33:30

What's the problem? What others wear is never anyone else's business. I must say it sounds incredibly sensible to me.

My husband was racing cyclist in the 60s. Wearing tights was common practice then.

I noticed this fashion in a North American film I watched recently. In the film it was young women wearing the skimpy shorts and what looked like warm, thigh high leg-warmers. There was a small gap between he top of the leg-warmers and the bottom of the skimpy shorts which only just covered the bottom.

My reaction was a smile, same as it is for most fashions.

As others have no doubt already said, does it matter?

Shropshirelass Sun 31-Jan-21 10:11:12

I think they call them under armour, sounds more acceptable than tights or leggings I suppose.

Forestflame Sun 31-Jan-21 09:48:39

A couple of years ago at our local Parkrun, we had a male runner turn up wearing tight lycra leggings. It left nothing to the imagination and it wasn't pretty!

IMO all sports clothes look ghastly, so surely it doesn't matter if men wear tights under their shorts.

^He must be a softie, Winter or Summer, Rain, Snow and Ice, our postie wears shorts and a bush hat^.
Is that all?? Blimey!?

Fabulous ???

Nemesia Thu 28-Jan-21 12:14:51

I understand these are called "skins" . My grandsons wear them for rugby and football training.
I got a very hard look when I referred to them as leggings

Rufus2 Thu 28-Jan-21 11:56:30

ones with shorts on over the tights, I would definitely go for the latter. Just tights can leave nothing to the imagination

Wheniwasyour age I imagine you're having a job keeping up these days! grin
So you'll have to rely on a fertile memory needing lots of fertilizer! shock

Each to his own. It's harmless.

Hetty58 Thu 28-Jan-21 10:11:32

'Base layer' leggings, rather than tights around here. It's to keep the leg muscles warm, and yes, the shorts are needed for modesty!
