To wonder why people don’t read the thread

Ok so I probably am BU. I just don’t understand how it happens. Do posters literally read the original post and reply without reading ANY other posts ? I’ve seen some threads where OP has returned several times to say the issue is sorted but posters still keep posting ! I’ve heard the excuse of not having time to read the thread but in that case why are you spending time on GN at all ??

sodapop Sat 30-Jan-21 15:28:00

Yes that's right Maggiemaybe does make things a bit easier.

Maggiemaybe Sat 30-Jan-21 15:12:37

The OP posts are all highlighted in green for me and mine in pink/purple. Why can't this be done on both mobile and desktop sites,

So you’re seeing all Lucca’s comments highlighted, sodapop? That doesn’t happen for me on my iPhone or on my desktop. confused

Riverwalk

Never mind reading the whole thread, some people don't even read the original post properly!

For example 'my 13 year old granddaughter is blah blah'....

Someone will then ask 'how old is your GD?' grin

Some threads are very long so it's inevitable that things move on, and posters don't have time to read the whole thing.

I agree with Riverwalk and felice that it’s not just not taking time to read all posts, but original posts too. To me, it gives the impression of not being listened to, when, as well as the examples above, replies don’t reflect the original question. It’s not very helpful to someone who may be needing a wee bit of support.

Why is repeating what's been said before a bad thing? I cannot be the only gransnetter to be totally unperturbed by someone saying the same as I've said. I don't understand why that bothers people.

Couldn’t agree more. What does it matter.

Doodledog Sat 30-Jan-21 15:06:11

Of course no-one "is meant to" bring others up to speed. It's a simple choice. Bring people up to speed if you want to; don't if you don't want to.

Which is what we all do (or don't do). There is nothing stopping people thinking it's rude, though, or starting a thread to say so - as you say, you can't chair Gransnet.

Jaxjacky Sat 30-Jan-21 15:01:29

I’ve been guilty recently of not properly reading the OP, once. My own fault for speed reading, I’m trying to slow down, but I do try and skim the whole thread.

sodapop Sat 30-Jan-21 15:00:13

Then the game could be endlessly repetitive Kim19

Or it’s an abc. There’s always one. grin

Bathsheba Sat 30-Jan-21 14:53:46

It happens on all SM. I always chuckle on Facebook when someone posts a picture of something, asking "anyone know what this is? I found it when sorting out my late mother's house." Immediately someone will answer saying "it's an 'xyz' ", followed by someone else saying exactly the same. The OP will thank them, "Ah yes of course, thanks!". Which is followed by 20 or 30 people all saying "it's an 'xyz' " grin

TerriBull Sat 30-Jan-21 14:50:23

Baggs has made some good points, sometimes threads meander and digress and throw up similar problems, where posters may respond to those. I think that's the nature of public forums and it's not like a meeting where issues have to be discussed within a time frame. Although having said that I don't disagree with the OP either, of course if a thread is very long it's often too time consuming to go through the whole lot, and if you don't, sometimes salient points will be missed.

That's me though, I like to sit on the fence!

Maggiemaybe Sat 30-Jan-21 14:49:26

Me neither, Baggs. In fact I started a thread last year asking GNHQ to let us have all OP comments highlighted in green, as happens on Mumsnet. The fact that people keep repeating the request is great. Perhaps one day GNHQ might listen!

Baggs Sat 30-Jan-21 14:32:12

Elegran

The OP could be their own "chair" and close down discussion of that question once they had enough info.

How can an OP close down discussion, elegran?

I agree she can say her question has been answered or that she has got lots of good stuff out of a discussion, and stuff like that, but if people want to blether on they do and nothing except the thread's reaching its thousand post limit, or deletion by HQ, will stop them.

The number of threads I've seen over the years where people say "Let's draw a line under this" and it doesn't happen. You must have seen that too.

Atqui Sat 30-Jan-21 14:29:36

If a thread is very long and I CBA to read it all , I wouldn’t comment , as I would think I might be repeating what’s gone before, but that’s just my humble opinion, and apologies if someone has already said that?

Chewbacca Sat 30-Jan-21 14:09:32

Agree with you Lucca. And I know which thread you're referring to.

Elegran Sat 30-Jan-21 14:02:26

Elegran Sat 30-Jan-21 14:00:31

The option for an OP who has the answer to their question to be able to close it with a thankyou post is a good one. Then it would stop collecting answers and going on for ever. Of course, if someone else had the same question, they would start another identical thread, which would collect the same answers and so ad infinitum.

*Those who think 'sorted' could just leave the thread alone and, you know, stop annoying themselves by reading it.*

It's not just when a thread is 'sorted' that it's annoying, though. It's when someone comes along and ignores everything that's gone before (saying they don't have time to read it) and asks others to spend their time recapping or explaining what's happened.

They don't do it in so many words, but that's what it boils down to when a post says 'I haven't read the three page thread, but what about xyz (that was discussed at length on page 1)? Is everyone else meant to break off what they are discussing and use their own time to bring them up to speed?

Of course no-one "is meant to" bring others up to speed. It's a simple choice. Bring people up to speed if you want to; don't if you don't want to.

I expect that's what happens except for when moany-pants(es) come along and complain about being 'expected' to do somethng they don't want to do. No-one can force you to respond to an annoying post. Other people's perceived expectations are irrelevant to one's own behaviour on a GN thread.

Maggiemaybe Sat 30-Jan-21 13:52:57

Teacheranne, click on the three dots in a post, choose Bookmark, and you’ll be taken back to that place in the thread.

If the OP came back and we could see the message in green it would be so much easier.
I dont have time to read through pages and pages of the threads so I try to skim through to see if the OP has come back and replied, sometimes I expect I miss it, because I didn’t see it.

Totally agree, this option is used on other forums.

Another thing that annoys me is that when I revisit a post I have commented on, I return to the beginning of the post. On another forum I used daily, it returns me back to when I last read the thread so I only read new messages.

PamelaJ1 Sat 30-Jan-21 13:41:01

Sorry * Lucca* only read Atqui’s post......
Not yours.
Where is my corner?

cornishpatsy Sat 30-Jan-21 13:40:24

Baggs put it so well, totally agree.

Kim19 Sat 30-Jan-21 13:39:33

Perhaps should have added that I never look back in a game. It is a game, after all.

PamelaJ1 I so agree. One feels like saying “ I just said that”!
By the way what is BU?
