Oh Miss Adventure I LOVE your posts - always make me smile - OP - KEEP THE DOSH - in your name - it's yours.
I think your hubby is a tighta**e and you deserve so much more than you get, but you clearly know that already, don't need a bunch of grans to tell you that.
HOWEVER - your question was: disclose or not - I vote for NOT
Gransnet forums
AIBU
AIBU to not disclose compensation
(215 Posts)Ok, here goes. I will TRY and condense our 30 years financial situation into this 'brief' post. My husband and myself have always held separate bank accounts, more so his instigation to do so than mine. He has a number of pensions plus state pension plus an ample amount in bank.
I dont work due to having an autoimmune disease. Because i dont work my husband gives me £100 each month as 'spends' and he pays all bills.
I have, on numerous occasions said about having access to his savings, which considering we are husband and wife, i see the savings as OUR savings but no, i am met with an angry face and the predictable announcement that the savings in his bank are HIS life savings, in other words YOU'RE NOT GETTING YOUR HANDS ON IT !
So, today in the post is a compensation cheque for a power cut we experienced a couple weeks ago, for some strange and unknown reason the cheque is in MY name despite the fact my husband pays the bill !
So, AIBU to keep and shhhhhhh ?
Surely a cheque made out to you will need to be paid into your account?
So pay it in, wait and see. If your DH is not expecting it and does not have access to that bank account, job done. It’s yours.
If it is a joint account, you can explain if and when he asks.
But if you have access to a joint account, can you not help yourself to more spending money when you need it?
But how do they have your name?
Calistemon ... yes, i was left the house when my mum passed away, ahhh i never thought that that would be the reason for the cheque being in my name, ahhh well done to you. phew that clears that query up, now getting back to the initial shall I/shan't I
Apparently everyone gets it, Urmstongran
However, if it was addressed to you, Serendipity does that mean the house is in your name?
Serendipitous!

If this is a genuine post, I cannot understand why a refund cheque has been issued in your name.
You say you have separate bank accounts and your husband pays the bill, so where do you come into it? How come the utility company can issue the refund to you? How do they even know you exist?I think I might get it now!
I was thinking it was a refund from the fuel company but it's not.
It is compensation from the Scottish? Government because Serendipity had no power for a week when the power lines were down after the gales.
Because Serendipity is in receipt of a Disability? Allowance (is that right?) she is entitled to compensation.
Is that it?
It's yours, Serendipity
Enjoy!
Oh brilliant deduction Cali.
Yes definitely keep it Serendipity I’m certain now that Cali has explained why you’ve been given it.
Now, what will you spend your little windfall on? ??
MissAdventure absolutely, yes its quite therapeutic having a moan and getting different points of view, because we dont know everything and it only takes 1 suggestion or point of view for us to sit bolt upright and realise we had never taken that into account.
Yes, i will have a zzzzz on it and see what frame of mind i wake up in haha, watch this space !
Anyone would think it was thousands and thousands im toying over ....
I think sleeping on a problem always helps in deciding what to do.
At least you've had a good moan and a bit of a chat, so that's sort of a bonus in itself.
MissAdventure
Have i decided yet? Whoaaa I've been trying to prove my innocence so no, haven't come to a conclusive decision as yet ha ha ha. People who have been kind enough to reply are drawn both ways. I think i will zzzzz on it and hope I wake with a concrete decision ( as im typing this out im leaning towards honesty is the best policy )
I suppose you could give him half - for his Christmas present?
Have you decided yet?
Are you swaying either way?
Calistemon it was a power cut a few weeks ago and because people were without electricity, we have all ( i am presuming all ) got a cheque as compensation. No its nothing to do with receivership of a form of disability allowance, its purely and simply because there was a power cut to householders.
Thank you for your reply
It is in your name, so put it in your account.
If any questions are asked, you could open up the discussion. With your positive attitude and sense of humour, it could be interesting!
Incidentally, when I first married, we operated our finances in a similar fashion. DH felt, as the main breadwinner, that it was his responsibility to finance the household, no questions asked. As our salaries increased( mine hugely, as my hours increased and promotion too) I contributed more to costs, and in the end, I am the one with savings, as DH is a spender. It can work to have separate finances.

Blimey ! This is getting way beyond the initial reasoning for my question.
Ok Germanshepherd i have no idea whatsoever why i get the amount i get in benefits, you will have to take that up with the people who set the amount. I do not chase every possible benefit going, for the ery simple reason that i would far, far, FAR rather be able-bodied than raking in every penny piece thats out there, money cant make my body work as it should do, so i get what i get because i was steered in the direction to claim it. I was a carer before i lost an awful lot of my ability to do the job that i love with a PASSION....
I am not trying to humor you or win points, if you have your sights set on i am making ANY of this up then i cant change that and i am sorry you feel this way as i said before, i THOUGHT the purpose of Gransnet was to put problems out there for feedback ! Obviously i have got THAT wrong.
No question, keep it

That is what i thought too ( cheque in my name ) i cant take a photo and post on here because obviously my name will be known nationwide hahahaha .... i know my husband pays the direct debit and the actual bills and all info comes through to my phone ( my email address that i access on my phone ) so THAT is the 1 and only time that MRS is part of this whole cheque - AIBU post do its as baffling to me as it is to everyone on here totally baffling...
It says on the letter that the cheque was attached to that they have put the cheque in the only name that they have on their records, which made ME think * but its MR who pays the direct debit not MRS*
OK if you’re not pensionable age humour me by explaining why do you only get £100 a month in benefits for being unable to work? And telling me how you received a cheque from the elec co if the account isn’t in your name, which doesn’t seem to bother you in the least? It just doesn’t add up.
£25 a week is an awful allowance
MissAdventure hahahaha... 'under the patio' THATS FUNNY...
YES I FIND IT FUNNY, if that is allowed ?
Germanshepherd you didnt need to go to the lengths of searching for the total sum of benefit allowance thinking you were exposing a liar, in the nicest way possible ( as much as words typed out on a screen can do ) i can assure you that all i wanted was feedback on all truthful explanations, i thank you for your feedback and yes i myself can be very sceptical about certain things in life but on this occasion there is absolutely nothing to be sceptical about ....
I send you a bunch of flowers to settle everything

Maggie Tulliver/Lucy Snowe/SinglePringle. I hope I'm wrong as I don't want to start distrusting everyone new, as I was a few months ago, but all the signs are there apart from the storyline. I feel I have been taken for a mug again.
The OP's name is familiar and a quick search shows she's been posting since at least last year, longer than you, and on different topics.
If you have concerns you should report to GNHQ, not speculate.
Unfortunately for her, I think her plight is genuine.
Oh I'm enjoying the thread.
You have a moan, love.
Will he fit under the patio?
Ilovecheese
Keep it. If it shows up on your utility bill, tell him "This was MY CHEQUE IN MY NAME AND YOU ARE NOT GETTING YOUR HANDS ON IT"
Exactly this!!
