Who is Kate Middleton?

Am I alone in being truly fed up with Prince Williams wife forever being described by her maiden name in newspapers and magazines?

Beswitched Sat 29-Jan-22 20:43:45

Why is referring to someone by their maiden name rude and disrespectful?

Waity Katie was rude and disrespectful.
Referring to Sarah Ferguson as the Duchess of Pork was rude and disrespectful.
Calling Beatrice and Eugenie the Ugly Sisters was rude and disrespectful - and of course, as with all those stupid nicknames totally untrue).

But Kate Middleton? Rude and disrespectful? Really?

Iam64 Sat 29-Jan-22 20:35:19

Why would she hate being called by the name she had for most of her life

grannyrebel7 Sat 29-Jan-22 20:12:28

I hate to see her referred to as Middleton Mallin. It really annoys me too. So rude and disrespectful. Bet she hates it too.

I don't understand why it matters either Lucca. We all know Kate is The Duchess of Cambridge, we all know Pippa is the younger sister Philippa, we know Jamie Oliver who was christened James, Katie Price who was christened Katrina etc. Names get abbreviated and changed for different reasons.
The Queen has a dog she calls Candy, maybe it was christened Candace?
What I didn't like was the papers referring to William's girlfriend as Waity Katey. That was disrespectful.

Lucca Sat 29-Jan-22 19:05:29

I mean does it matter about the Kate/Catherine thing.

Lucca Sat 29-Jan-22 19:04:43

Sorry but really does it matter ?

Also,a poster said the D,of C speaks more “upper class”than William. She doesn’t speak “upper class “ at all. She speaks in a very “careful”way.

Anniebach Sat 29-Jan-22 14:04:47

Yes eazybee if Charles hadn’t been Prince of Wales or a duke
she would have been princess Charles ,

Kate will never be princess Catherine but she may be
Catherine princess of Wales

eazybee Sat 29-Jan-22 13:31:27

Diana Spencer became Diana, Princess of Wales on her marriage ; she never was nor ever would be Princess Diana and I wish people would use her correct title.
Even the BBC refer to her as Princess Diana but then accuracy is the last thing which concerns them.

Iam64 Sat 29-Jan-22 13:20:51

She was Kate at uni and school. I’ve read it’s what her family call her, including william

Beswitched Sat 29-Jan-22 13:18:48

I think she was generally known as Kate at University. I know a man called Eddie, everyone calls him that except his wife who calls him Edward. We're not being disrespectful, it's how he introduces himself to people.

I know lots of women who go by both their maiden and married name depending on the situation. So at their children's school and when dealing with the bank they are Jane Greene but at work or with old friends they are Jane Lewis.

Anniebach Sat 29-Jan-22 11:24:57

Was she not Kate at university? The press didn’t decide that.

maddyone Sat 29-Jan-22 11:14:18

Her name is Catherine. As the mother of a daughter named Catherine I think it’s disrespectful to call her Kate. Clearly she hasn’t asked them to do that, it’s the press who have decided to call her Kate. I have no idea what William and her family call her and neither has anyone else, and so she should be called Catherine.

Princess Diana was often called Lady Di in the press and as someone has pointed out Sarah Ferguson as Fergie and Meghan Markle still is. They seem to use the quickest name they know.
I don't think the press are trying to remind us that she is just one of us. Her elocuted way of speaking is the give away. Her speech is not natural it sounds like she has had lessons at sometime. In fact she speaks more upperclass than Prince William who seems to have brought his speech to a more colloquial level as he grows older.
Who knows what they all call each other and does it matter ?We all know her back ground what her parents were and her grandparents.

Lucca Sat 29-Jan-22 10:58:31

Anniebach

Many generations of Catherine in my family, in South Wales
shortened to Kate in North Wales shortened to Cadi.

Agree !

TerriBull Sat 29-Jan-22 10:42:30

I agree, Catherine is a beautiful name, my maternal grandmother was one and it was one of my mother's names and one of mine, not my first, I wish it had been, I'd have stayed a Catherine there are a plethora of Kates. I had it lined up for a prospective daughter, but she didn't arrive!

On the subject of maiden names, I was happy to offload mine, too foreign and given I was mispronounced much of my school life I felt I stood out when I wanted to blend in, it made me self conscious and I hated drawing attention to myself.

henetha Sat 29-Jan-22 10:13:20

I find it strange that newspapers persist with this, I think of her as Catherine, as it's such a beautiful name. (a close relative of mine is called it).
I think she's wonderful, a real breath of fresh air in the royal family, and I fervently hope she becomes Queen one day.

grumppa Sat 29-Jan-22 09:25:55

Unless I've misremembered my Debrett, Catherine Duchess of Cambridge would mean that she's divorced.

Kalu I think that it’s the Middleton part that some posters think is disrespectful, I could be wrong

Must pay more attention Fanny. ?

You might be.

I'm not sure why the media do it. Maybe to emphasise her 'ordinariness' whilst sycophantly telling us in minute detail about her every move and gesture. Especially when she wears the same outfit more than once.

They like to present the aristocracy, royalty and politicians in familiar terminology so we see them as human, "just like us, really".

Hence "Kate", "Boris", "Maggie" (back in the 70s)... though they haven't yet 'humanised' Jacob Rees-Mogg - he hasn't (as far as I know) become our "Jacob". Although he has been referred to as "Moggy" by some. grin

Maggiemaybe Sat 29-Jan-22 08:50:38

Good point, Josieann.

Josieann Sat 29-Jan-22 08:43:56

So why do we say Anne Boleyn or Lady Jane Grey, using their maiden names?

Anniebach Sat 29-Jan-22 08:00:15

Maiden name - now, there’s a thread all its own

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 29-Jan-22 07:57:51

Sophie Rhys Jones is never called by her maiden name she is usually Sophie Wessex.
