Am I alone in being truly fed up with Prince Williams wife forever being described by her maiden name in newspapers and magazines?

eazybee Sat 29-Jan-22 13:31:27

Diana Spencer became Diana, Princess of Wales on her marriage ; she never was nor ever would be Princess Diana and I wish people would use her correct title.
Even the BBC refer to her as Princess Diana but then accuracy is the last thing which concerns them.

Anniebach Sat 29-Jan-22 14:04:47

Yes eazybee if Charles hadn’t been Prince of Wales or a duke
she would have been princess Charles ,

Kate will never be princess Catherine but she may be
Catherine princess of Wales

Sorry but really does it matter ?

Also,a poster said the D,of C speaks more “upper class”than William. She doesn’t speak “upper class “ at all. She speaks in a very “careful”way.

Lucca Sat 29-Jan-22 19:05:29

I mean does it matter about the Kate/Catherine thing.

Josieann Sat 29-Jan-22 19:43:56

I don't understand why it matters either Lucca. We all know Kate is The Duchess of Cambridge, we all know Pippa is the younger sister Philippa, we know Jamie Oliver who was christened James, Katie Price who was christened Katrina etc. Names get abbreviated and changed for different reasons.
The Queen has a dog she calls Candy, maybe it was christened Candace?
What I didn't like was the papers referring to William's girlfriend as Waity Katey. That was disrespectful.

grannyrebel7 Sat 29-Jan-22 20:12:28

I hate to see her referred to as Middleton Mallin. It really annoys me too. So rude and disrespectful. Bet she hates it too.

Iam64 Sat 29-Jan-22 20:35:19

Why would she hate being called by the name she had for most of her life

Beswitched Sat 29-Jan-22 20:43:45

Why is referring to someone by their maiden name rude and disrespectful?

Waity Katie was rude and disrespectful.
Referring to Sarah Ferguson as the Duchess of Pork was rude and disrespectful.
Calling Beatrice and Eugenie the Ugly Sisters was rude and disrespectful - and of course, as with all those stupid nicknames totally untrue).

But Kate Middleton? Rude and disrespectful? Really?

Oldnproud Sat 29-Jan-22 20:57:28

I agree with lam64 and Beswitched.

Plus, I'm not going to get all het up on someone else's behalf about something that, for all I know, they might be perfectly happy about.

MissAdventure Sat 29-Jan-22 20:59:09

Yes, but think of the poor queen, won't you?
I bet she doesnt like it! sad

Anniebach Sat 29-Jan-22 21:39:05

Doubt the Queen cares, at one time the press referred to
Randy Andy. Diana was often Princess Di , even though not a
princess and even after the divorce. The York’s were Andy and
Fergie. The Queen Mother was The Queen Mum.

With all the rubbish in the press over the years why would the
Queen care about the use of the name Kate

FannyCornforth Sun 30-Jan-22 02:20:35

Annie you’ve just reminded me, at one time (probably in Kelvin Mackenzie's The Sun) HM was known as ‘Liz’!
Seems like heresy now!

BlueSky Mon 31-Jan-22 10:08:24

I’ve never believed you give up your own surname when you marry. You are still Ms Mary Smith, known as Mrs Mary Jones for practical purposes. I’ve always seen it like that but a lot of women seem to be proud to ‘lose’ their surname!

Caleo Mon 31-Jan-22 11:40:05

I doubt if the intention is disrespect. It is actually interesting to many people that an important member of the Royal Family and future queen is a commoner by birth and upbringing.

GillT57 Mon 31-Jan-22 12:21:05

I hate sloppy journalism where members of the royal family are referred to as if they are 'our family', they are not. I hated terms like 'Queen Mum', 'Lady Di', not because I am a royalist ( I am not) but because it is all part of the myth. I wish them no harm, but I do not 'love' or 'adore' people that I have not, and never will meet.

Anniebach Mon 31-Jan-22 12:26:42

What has love and adoring to do with use of surnames

Daisend1 Mon 31-Jan-22 13:07:46

Catherine, be it spelled with a C or K became Duchess of Cambridge on the day of her marriage to Prince William. Maybe her nearest and dearest refer to her as K/Cate That is their privilege not that of the public.

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 13:11:37

I'm sorry, why is it considered a privilege to refer to someone by their name instead of a silly made up title that didn't exist for 200 years until the Queen resurrected it?

There'll be no cap-doffing in my neck of the woods.

Farzanah Mon 31-Jan-22 14:18:53

I don’t care what the press call William’s wife, and think there’s too much drivel printed about the RF of whom in truth we actually know very little because of their culture of secrecy.
I do agree with Alegria’s point about the way the press manipulate the public by the careful wording they employ in describing people and events.

Lucca Mon 31-Jan-22 14:24:54

“ That is their privilege not that of the public.”

Dear oh dear . Sorry to be blunt you do sound a bit uptight !

Goodness and another person saying it’s rude and disrespectful, i honestly can’t believe this.

And if I’m not mistaken there’s a least one royal family fan on here who doesn’t think like that !

grandtanteJE65 Mon 31-Jan-22 14:25:09

But you only need to type it once! Word and every other computer progam you can think of can store frequently used words or phrases when you type your abbreviation of them.

I have always assumed that those who persist in referring to the Duchess of Cambridge as Kate Middelton are either opposed to Royalty or the reverse, such arrants snobs that they are determined to remind us all, including the lady in question and her husband that she was not born in a royal palace, but in a home that far more nearly corresponds to most people's.

Anniebach Mon 31-Jan-22 14:27:55

Wrong on both grandtanteJE65

Absolute nonsense. On this thread you will see fervent royalists who don’t mind (or even notice possibly!) fervent anti RF who don’t mind and “them as aren’t bothered “either way about the RF who think OP is making a fuss about nothing !

I really don't think most people put that much thought into it. The title Duchess of Cambridge has just never really caught on in the public mind. Neither has Duchess of Cornwall or Duchess of Sussex. Times have just changed obviously.

Bridgeit Tue 01-Feb-22 09:39:02

Never gave it a thought until now.
Now that I have , I feel it conveys a pleasant & personal touch to an already pleasant lady.
