To think William Morris and Gransnet are poles apart

A recent thread was deleted because "it brought nothing useful of beautiful to the site". A reference of course to Morris's advice Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.
I can't see what on earth this has to do with threads on GN. Many of which are just ways to pass the time, gossip or games. So can anyone find a connection between the two or am I right in thinking William Morris is now turning in his grave? Or is this perhaps a new turning for GNHQ and will all posts now be looked at for beauty and usefulness? (Possibly though the new moderator is an intern who has just finished an art degree grin)

If any of you are traveling through northern France and have the time, there is an Arts and Crafts house by Edwin Lutyens with the garden by Getrude Jekyll. It's called Bois des Moutiers at Varengeville and is well worth a visit. I mention it because it has William Morris textiles in at least one of the bedrooms.

It used to have a large Morris tapestry designed by Burne Jones. During WW2 the house was occupied by the Germans who drove a tank up the middle of Jekyll's walled garden, thereby destroying it. After the war the family decided to sell the tapestry in order to fund renovations to the house and gardens.

On one of our visits we saw an elderly lady in the garden pushing an empty pram and taking cuttings or possibly dead heading. She started talking to us and it turned out that she was the lady of the house. It's future is uncertain because on the death of its owner a few years ago it was left to 4 people and they can't afford the upkeep.

For lovers of the Arts and Crafts movement it is an essential visit. One of Lutyens' first houses and very beautiful with its interiors with all the English fittings pretty much intact.

varian, please do educate us grin as I know a bit but not enough....

In December 1884, Morris founded the Socialist League (SL) with other SDF defectors. He composed the SL's manifesto with Bax, describing their position as that of "Revolutionary International Socialism", advocating proletarian internationalism and world revolution while rejecting the concept of socialism in one country.[

In this, he committed himself to "making Socialists" by educating, organising, and agitating to establish a strong socialist movement; calling on activists to boycott elections, he hoped that socialists would take part in a proletariat revolution and help to establish a socialist society.[

Bax taught Morris more about Marxism, and introduced him to Marx's collaborator, Friedrich Engels; Engels thought Morris honest but lacking in practical skills to aid the proletariat revolution.

Morris remained in contact with other sectors of London's far left community, being a regular at the socialist International Club in Shoreditch, East London, however he avoided the recently created Fabian Society, deeming it too middle-class.

Although a Marxist, he befriended prominent anarchist activists Stepniak and Peter Kropotkin, and came to be influenced by their anarchist views, to the extent that biographer Fiona MacCarthy described his approach as being "Marxism with visionary libertarianism".

My great grandfather, a radical activist in the late 19th century, knew William Morris.

I often wonder how the middle class ladies who chose his wallpaper and curtain designs in the 1970's and 80's, might have felt about his politics.

fairfraise Sun 20-Feb-22 17:54:52

I just love all William Morris designs. Made some curtains once but passed them on, when they didn't fit the next house.

Farzanah

I blame Jane Morris. She’s got wind of you posting FannyC and trying to sabotage wink

As "not in the spirit of GN" is now old hat maybe they are looking for new suggestions.
I like your idea Farzanah perhaps they could use"Jane Morris doesn't like it"

But, to paraphrase - "She has no authority here, that Jane Morris" grin

Just looked on Next for the PJs and shirt. DH says if we buy those and sit on the sofa, we won’t be able to find each other. That should be fun ?

French and Saunders did a sketch on Giles and Mary off gogglebox where they were camouflaged into the wall/chairs.... also William Morris smile

William Morris designs has dog poo bag holders. The poor man would be turning in his grave!

Perhaps I'll change my mind about cushions then.

Blossoming Sun 20-Feb-22 16:42:27

Q. Why do GNHQ delete threads with no artistic merit?

A. Because they can.

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Feb-22 16:35:25

I do fancy a William Morris face mask.

Our decor, in the early 80’s, was a mix of Sanderson/Morris, Liberty and Laura Ashley.
Wallpaper and matching curtains! De rigueur once upon a time. ??‍♀️
Loved it then but my taste has changed completely from busy to a more calming effect.
