To be very shocked at attitude towards finding money

I agree Beswitched as well as some really aggressive posters on MN, there are posters who are very kind and thoughtful. Personally, I just find GN a kinder place.

Jane that reminds me of when we found a (gorgeous) lost dog.

I rang the police; and the dog had indeed been reported lost.
They had the owner’s details.

I had to literally beg the duty officer to give me the phone number of the owner of the dog.

Someone on Mumsnet dubbed it the quilt of guilt.

I love Mumsnet. Even though I now agree that a great big swathe of them aren’t as upright and honest as they ought to be. A lot still are though.

How often do you ever see those? Even if you take hefty sums from a cash machine?
On reflection, it sounds more like a dodgy stash, than some old dear hiding her money away in a ‘safe place’.

I agree. Which is why taking it to police would be best imo, and telling them which shop you bought it at. The charity shop would then be helping police but wouldn't have the whole responsibility.

But I wouldn't begrudge the money to someone who really needed it, so I'd be kinda hoping its source was never found and the person who found, if poor, got it back ?

Baggs, the police wont take in money or lost property anymore. They advise you to ask on your local facebook if you find something but not put exactly what it is! I know!

I've often thought what amount of money I'd have to find before I reported it. For example if I picked up a £10 note in the street I'd keep it. Anything over £40 then I'd probably think about handing it to the police. If I found a valuable object, such as a gold ring, I couldn't possibly keep it.

Are they? I’d like to read the thread. Does anyone have a link?

The difference though is that only one poster on here can see nothing wrong with just keeping the money and saying nothing. Whereas on Mumsnet a very sizeable number are advocating this.

Nothing I read on MN now surprises me! At first I couldn't believe how rude and aggressive some of the posters are; telling each other to 'just F**k off' is pretty normal. I despair at how morals seem to have taken a dip.

I must be reading different threads on Mumsnet, Curlywhirly, as I see a lot of compassion, common sense and honesty from posters on there. It’s certainly not the norm for anyone to tell another poster to F off! They can be very open with each other though, which is no bad thing imho. I can’t find the thread in question but I’m sure there’ll be plenty of posters saying just the same things as the majority are on here.

And that, gsm, is what shocked people. But the philosophical what ifs were interesting and good for our brain cells ?

It’s always possible that if the notes were stolen there would be a record of the serial numbers. But if she’s now paid the money into her bank they will probably have become untraceable unless banks have a habit of checking serial numbers of large quantities of notes paid in. I have no idea about that, but I would think it likely that the bank would query the origin of a large amount, especially in £50 notes under money laundering regulations. So if the story is true her actions may come back to bite her. Someone considering spending the money on a holiday isn’t going to be on their uppers.

Elderly people (including myself) do hide cash in the most unlikely places. Often it has nothing to do with not trusting banks, etc. but the feeling of safety in having some cash close by.

When my Dad died (over twenty years ago), , I found a brown envelope with a hundred pounds in notes hidden in his dirty washing basket. Just pure luck that I went through that, pulling out each item separately, to decide what to wash for charity shops and what to throw away.

Yes, I keep cash hidden at home (my emergency fund), but have also made sure that my daughter who lives nearby , knows where it is.

I think I would return it to the charity shop. But I'm also aware of how poor some people are and that money will make a lot of difference to them, if they're out of work for instance, ill, struggling with bills, debts, etc, etc, so I'm not going to condemn anyone when I don't know their circumstances. I haven't walked in their shoes.

In this case the op wanted to use it to fund an expensive holiday and wSas being encouraged to do so by a sizeable number of posters.

I’ve volunteered and am now working in a charity shop and can say that I would have absolutely no idea who had donated the quilt had it come to us unless it has a gift aid ticket still attached, although most donations are not gift aided. A couple of times last week I took in over sixty bags of donations, over two hundred by the week’s end. The bags containing fabric of any kind are thrown into large pens for sorting at a later date which could be a week or two later, we also receive stock from other branches so there huge amounts to be got through.

If the (possibly nonexistent) quilt had been returned to us I’m sure the charity’s PR team would try to find the donor using all the media outlets available to them.
