Why do womens clothes designers do this?

I went to buy a jumper online today and the size choices given were 12/14 or 16/18 why do so many manufactures leave out the 14/16 size
A 12 would be too small for me but an 18 huge is it too much to ask for a 14/16 size ?

I'm sure I used to buy jeans in a size 9 or 11 when I was in my twenties .My daughter tells me I'm havering but I'm quite sure .It was a specialist jeans shop in Glasgow

No, I remember buying a size 11.

Trouble is - you can't always try things on in the shop these days, so end up buying- go home to fit on - return to shop. It's so time consuming! On the positive side - does make you think more than twice about buying, which has got to be good for your bank balance - and the planet!

Many foreign companies use stolen designs which are printed on substandard fabrics that are cheap and nasty. A lot sell at Amazon.
I won't blame the Chinese, because I recently read about an Indian company that was using stolen designs for its curtains. I know this type of thing happens across the board.
Amused by Shein, for the strange and awful things they sell made from really nasty fabrics. I've never bought from them, but I look for amusement purposes.

Not all Chinese companies are dreadful. Having had the problem with lengths that so many of you have mentioned, I ordered 4 dresses from China a couple of years ago and they all fitted. Of course they were all different sizes (ranging from 1XL to 5XL), but they all gave measurements which I checked carefully beforehand, and I was prepared to wait four weeks for them to arrive. I expected they would be very screwed up, but they were nicely packed and didn't even need ironing. It seems I am an average height for a Chinese woman! That must be where I've been going wrong all these years.

But how to you afford ordering two sizes online Audio it costs money to send one back it shouldn’t have to be like this

I bought some pyjamas from debenhams online. Described as crop. They reached 5inches …yes inches…beyond my feet!! If I had worn them with the waist band above my bust they would have fitted fine ?. I’m not excessively short

They also offered 8-10. Or 12-14. Annoying.

I have worked in retail clothes boutiques when young and bigger outlets and the sizes are crazy. , I have so many different sizes in my wardrobe, I just try and if fits buy! I really don’t take any notice of sizing nowadays but if buying online of course I order two dif sizes, even then some come up the same size

Marks and Spencer seems to have lost the plot with sizing. There are only food shops in my area so no chance of trying things on. It makes me so cross when I send for several items online and trousers especially, are all different lengths and certainly not the quality that they used to be. Years ago M and S could always be relied upon and I think that is sad. I have had their high rise shorts for years. Washed and washed and still great. Have just ordered more and am hoping not to be disappointed. I love comfort in my underwear. Let's be honest, I like comfort in everything now that I am 76.

Yes, I remember buying size 11, can't recall where though

I agree nexus , designers assume that the lager people are the longer their arms ! Drives me mad. Have given up taking much notice of if size labels. If a garment fits that’s fine if not it’s back on the rack. M and S sizing is very inconsistent.

I've lost a lot of weight through illness, but my size 14 'Roman' stretch trousers are still tight!!

Snowedunder Sun 03-Apr-22 00:06:09

I used to buy size 11 jeans in Glasgow. Many moons ago.

dogsmother Sat 02-Apr-22 23:15:40

Absolutely amazing I’m sure I’m a 13.

glammagran Sat 02-Apr-22 23:13:41

In M&S I have exchanged products I have liked from my usual size 14 to both a size 12 or a size 16 (recently) I just wish clothing sizes could be consistent.

I am AMAZED that Gransnet still carry adverts for Chinese branded clothing. My experience was so bad I only got my money back after complaining, from my credit card company.

This thread reminds me of a Victoria Wood sketch, where she said she was a 16 in one shop, an 18 in another shop, and a 10 in M&S because they don't want to upset anyone.

M&s and also next are ridiculous for their vanity sizing....I got a size 6 dress from next and I am an 8 to 10 in reality

Finding new knickers is hard these days too! grin

Is it me or is the High street dead? Last few times I've even had to buy underwear online. Mind you, after my yukky experience trying to buy an M&S bra, I wouldn't go bra shopping there again. (someone put their manky old bra in a new box during the pandemic and I thought it was a new one, so went to try it on) ?

Nannashirlz Sat 02-Apr-22 18:28:09

Funny thing I was looking for some new knickers other day and I also noticed they did that with them too. I used to buy 12-14 now it’s 14-16

harold Sat 02-Apr-22 18:24:42

I think that M&S trousers are too long because they have a delusion that we all go around wearing 3 - 5 inch high heels.

Wendy Sat 02-Apr-22 18:21:38

I find 10/12 and 14/18 when I want 12/14 a pain.

Caleo Sat 02-Apr-22 17:28:07

I have given up about getting the right leg length and always keep iron-on hemming web in the house.

Caleo Sat 02-Apr-22 17:24:44

They should enter the sizes in inches or cms as do more helpful sellers on Ebay. For instance, armpit to armpit is very useful to know. Also crotch to waist seam.

Kathmaggie Sat 02-Apr-22 16:14:22

I bought jeans from next 2 years ago in a size 11 they were perfect!

fluttERBY123 Sat 02-Apr-22 16:08:28

Size 18/20 and proud. I am only 7 lbs overweight. Puzzled by pictures of obese people who bemoan being a size.22. It's all very confusing. I have lost 3 stone but have only gone from being a 20/22 to an 18/20. Cotton Traders, used to get M n S.

What drives me mad about M&S at the moment is the length of the jeans and trousers. I’m regular length, but now some are too short, some are too long, some are perfect. I even picked up three pairs of identical design jeans yesterday in three different colours, put them on one rail to decide which to have - and there was a two inch length difference between the pairs. I’m taking a tape measure with me next time..

Yes! M& S jeans!!
It’s driving me mad, have several old pairs of M&S jeans, size 8 regular length, all fit perfectly. Any new jeans I have tried on from M&S, size 8 too small, and far too long even the short length. Size 10 tends to be loose, and of course, far too long. I haven’t shrunk!! Must check the lengths when I go to M&S next time!

Musicgirl Sat 02-Apr-22 15:46:30

Also, why are M&S trousers so long? Do they think we are all about 6 feet tall? Previously regular length was generally fine for my average height and my mother had short. Now we need short and extra short respectively.
