Why do womens clothes designers do this?

I went to buy a jumper online today and the size choices given were 12/14 or 16/18 why do so many manufactures leave out the 14/16 size
A 12 would be too small for me but an 18 huge is it too much to ask for a 14/16 size ?

Absolutely agree. Seasalt do this and M& S used to;( don't know if they still do as store here has closed).

Kate1949 Thu 31-Mar-22 19:39:15

That drives mad.

JaneJudge Thu 31-Mar-22 19:40:31

i completely agree

Marydoll Thu 31-Mar-22 19:41:19

Me too, because I think I identify as a size 15! grin

And the variation in sizes is crazy too. I am wearing a size 14 jumper today, but I have others labelled 16 & 18..they all appear to be the same size...

I'm sure I used to buy jeans in a size 9 or 11 when I was in my twenties .My daughter tells me I'm havering but I'm quite sure .It was a specialist jeans shop in Glasgow

paddyann54 Thu 31-Mar-22 19:48:57

Sizing is all over the place nowadays though I have from size 8 to size 14 in my wardrobe and they all fit

I find the 14/16 size too big and need a 12/14. I suspect that many of these "joint" sizes are too big or too small for people, regardless of how they are paired up.

What's wrong with single sizes, 12, 14, 16 etc? Probably just as many would be sold and would fit better.

I often see clothes that I like, but when I find they come in 10/12 or 14/16 I don't buy them because they're no use.

But even single sizes are all over the place! I have five M and S jumpers same style, two are too small and one one is massive. All are marked size 16.

True, midgey !

DGDs uniform supplier does this. Age 5/6 then 7/8. When she grew out of 5-6 the 7-8 was huge on her.
It is very annoying

paddyann, I used to buy size 13 jeans in a little boutique inn Carlisle. That was years ago when Carlisle actually had some decent clothes shops.

I'm normally a size 12 or 14 but have clothes sized from 10 to 20, none of them oversized.

Oh for the days of Bulloughs and Clara Cullens and the lovely one the crescent opposite the train station. my mother bought her clothes for my wedding there . I shopped in Carlisle as a teenager as well and my wedding dress in a specialist shop.
All the independent shoe shops up little alleyways.
Nothing there now even House of Frazer has gone friends have told me.

Lands End jeans cross the sizes.

Next do the in between odd sizes , I noticed when I was buying trousers online that they did 13, 15, 17, Sometimes you don’t fit the standard sizes so this is good, let’s hope other retailers follow the idea ,

Margiknot Thu 31-Mar-22 23:12:35

I wondered if it’s instead of sizes small/ medium and large, in clothing where fit is less critical such as sweaters. ‘Small’ might mean 6-8 in one shop and 10-12 in another, so giving a dress size banding is less confusing perhaps?

Kittye Thu 31-Mar-22 23:51:02

I too find this annoying as I’m 14/16 depending on brand

I've bought two identical t-shirts from the same company in different colours, one was a good fit the other felt two sizes too small.
M&S are solving the problem though this week I received a pair of ballet pumps one was a 4 the other was a 4 and a half ,I think you choose the one that fits and hop.smile

Mollygo Fri 01-Apr-22 18:37:42

Bugs me, particularly with trousers.- 12-14 jumper may fit closely or be a bit loose. Mixed size trousers fall off!

AreWeThereYet Fri 01-Apr-22 19:20:30

Bugs me too. I need a 12-14, but most seem to be 10-12 or 14-16.

Something has definitely happened to M&S sizing - I found a pair of size 14 M&S straight jeans in a cupboard last week while I was sorting the room out. I don't know when I bought them, they don't look like they were worn much but they fit beautifully. I've been buying size 16 from M&S for the last three years.

Antonia Fri 01-Apr-22 19:36:43

This thread reminds me of a Victoria Wood sketch, where she said she was a 16 in one shop, an 18 in another shop, and a 10 in M&S because they don't want to upset anyone.

Susie42 Fri 01-Apr-22 19:41:45

Vanity sizing, the more expensive the garment the smaller the size indicated. Also poor quality control if made overseas.

Casdon Fri 01-Apr-22 19:48:04

What drives me mad about M&S at the moment is the length of the jeans and trousers. I’m regular length, but now some are too short, some are too long, some are perfect. I even picked up three pairs of identical design jeans yesterday in three different colours, put them on one rail to decide which to have - and there was a two inch length difference between the pairs. I’m taking a tape measure with me next time..
