Not fit to be prime minister

Compared to many people my disappointments during lockdown were not too bad.
Missing my golden wedding celebrations, not holding my new grandchild until he was nearly six months old. Not being able to have the other grandchildren to stay - they all live some distance away, not being able to attend a close friend’s funeral.
I, like most other UK citizens, stuck to the rules.
Boris and his cronies did not. They held drinks events and parties for pathetic, unacceptable reasons. How can they ever expect the electorate to respect them or their laws. How dare they think they still have a mandate to rule us?

Can’t argue with anyone but exactly WHO do we have to take over? Starmer? Don’t think so.

From a lay person perspective I can say the inoculations being rolled out so quickly, the help with firms paying staff. The reduction in deaths is directly attributed to getting the country inoculated so quickly. Just HOW would ANY government done it quicker?

I followed all rules yes, had close people who died before the inoculations BUT non of them died as a result of number 10 party!

So my thinking now is I am hugely grateful for the government to getting the Covid jabs out so quickly to my part of the country and I couldn’t actually give a toss who did what on what day! IF the parties affected you then yes but if not ?‍♀️

ValerieF I'm so sorry to hear that you lost loved ones to Covid.

There is a case to say that the irresponsible and illegal behaviour of our leaders e.g. parties, Matt Hancock's activities with his lover in his office caused many people to take the lockdown rules less seriously and that this may have caused many deaths.

The point is also not just that the parties happened but the torrent of lies that ensued from the PM, Chancellor and others about them after the event.

What is it with folk supporting Johnson? He is a through and through liar with no morals. I just cannot understand anyone thinking he is a suitable Prime Minister. He has been sacked numerous times for lying. He has been the same all through life even from his school days. Total embarrassment for the UK on the worldwide stage.

GillT57 Thu 14-Apr-22 19:06:17

Just how many times do we have to say that it is not just dancing the night away at no10 while the rest of us stayed at home and followed the advice, it is because he has shown contempt for Parliament by lying repeatedly. This may not concern some people, but it certainly concerns me

StoneofDestiny Thu 21-Apr-22 19:32:42

It's more than just breaking the law and being convicted of a criminal offence - it's about lying to Parliament. How can we trust a PM who cannot be truthful. Remember, this is not a 'one off', he has a history of lying to his wives/partners and in his previous jobs as a journalist - he has even been sacked for it!

vegansrock Thu 21-Apr-22 21:10:51

I’d know we’ve heard this before - but it looks like his days are numbered as Tory MPs call for him to go- he’s becoming a liability and becoming increasingly impossible to defend someone who repeatedly lies. Those pictures in India look like he’s on some sort of a royal visit. And when we will get the Sue Gray report?

Suze56 Fri 22-Apr-22 07:28:17

Personally I do not think he was ever fit to be prime minister. It saddens and alarms me that we have so many ridiculous men 'in charge'

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 22-Apr-22 07:31:17

The Sue Gray report won’t appear until the Met have finished issuing fines etc., etc. But they are having a break from that due to the forthcoming Local elections, I’m not sure that’s a good look on the Met’s part! Rather political isn’t it?

vegansrock Fri 22-Apr-22 08:26:05

Why should the elections stop them issuing fines? Surely the electorate need to know?

Daisymae Fri 22-Apr-22 08:51:53

It looks like the electorate are being asked to vote on partygate as no one else will. If you have a local election coming up I guess that it's a civic responsibility to get along and have your say.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 22-Apr-22 08:52:12

A Met spokesman said ‘…due to the restrictions around communicating…’ Page 5 of The Guardian.

DaisyAnne Fri 22-Apr-22 08:55:17

It is extremely political Ladyleftfieldover. It appears these far-right Tories now have a group not of Blackshirts or Brownshirts but Blueshirts.

However, I doubt that many of those wearing the blue uniform had a choice about becoming a political force.

Zonne Fri 22-Apr-22 09:13:15

The Met aren’t stopping investigating, and if there is cause, they will still issue fines.

What they are not doing is making any announcements about how many fines they’ve issued during purdah.

I think it’s a misinterpretation of the rules, (because one could argue they are influencing the result of the election either way) but I can see why their legal team have made this decision.

What will be much more interesting is whether Downing Street sticks to its commitment to publicly announce if Johnson or Sunak get fines.

Tony Blair lied about far more serious stuff and thousands died; not forgetting Dr Kelly. He didn’t resign even though he has blood on his hands. It’s just one more thing for political opponents to jump on. I’m not over enamoured of BJ but I don’t believe he should resign. What he’s had to contend with since becoming PM is more than anyone should have to contend with.

volver Fri 22-Apr-22 09:27:53

Johnson hasn't had anything more to contend with than any other world leader and at least he hasn't had to deal with foreign powers invading his country.

Par for the course when you want to lead a country I'm afraid. You've got to take the rough with the smooth and if you're not up to it and make a mess of it, then saying "it was really hard and he did his best" isn't a get out of jail free card that allows you to keep your job.

OakDryad Fri 22-Apr-22 09:37:14

We have been down a similar road before over his affair with Jennifer Arcuri. In 2013, her company was awarded £10,000 from a mayoral fund followed by £15,000 from a government programme. Johnson intervened to allow her onto three trade mission trips. He failed to declare his personal relationship as a conflict of interest.

In 2019, the Independent Office for Police Conduct delayed its announcement on whether Johnson should face an investigation into possible criminal misconduct until after the General Election.

tickingbird Fri 22-Apr-22 10:05:05

BJ has had a hell of a lot to contend with and didn’t start a phoney war whilst cosying up to the POTUS. The resulting fallout is the reason we have the Invictus games. The birth and horrors of ISIS, death and destruction in Iraq.

Talk about there’s none so blind…

volver Fri 22-Apr-22 10:11:22

What has Johnson had to contend with that the other heads of government of the world haven't?

Brexit doesn't count as he chose that and he told us it was all going to be easy and fine.

That occurred to me too!

OakDryad Fri 22-Apr-22 10:40:53

I think there’s a very real danger of some people believing that Johnson is some kind of world saviour.

I see news sources reporting that amid rumours of ministerial reshuffle, Johnson has promised Rishi Sunak will still be chancellor in the autumn, but refused to guarantee a job for the home secretary, Priti Patel.

Good morning everyone ?.
@metpoliceuk
can you now issue the remaining FPN’s so that we, the British public, can make informed decisions about who we choose to vote for. We have every right to know prior to the forthcoming elections.

Agree with you tickingbird.
He had Covid, was poorly, no visitors.
His mother died - couldn’t visit (hospital rules).
Brexit, Covid & supporting Ukraine (a damn sight better than some of our European friends and neighbours I may say!).

Look I do get what some of the fuss is about. But in the bigger picture -really?

I think most of the country come a GE will think ‘birthday cake and some fizz - who cares’?

‘Oh no’ say some ... ‘it’s because he’s a rule maker so he shouldn’t break the rules’.

“Okay - he’s apologised (like Nicola Sturgeon did) and got slapped with a FPN”

“AHA!” (if that hasn't wound up us red wall voters enough) ... it’s ‘he lied to Parliament’.

I think the majority of the voting public aren’t that engaged. Sorry but I don’t think the ordinary wo/man in the street are politically that minded. I know I wasn’t in say, my 30’s.

What will be will be. It will be interesting to see how this actually unfolds.

Can somebody who knows these things explain this to me?

Is him wearing a turban yesterday a sign of respect to or from the people he is visiting, or a religious requirement for the location, or something? Or was he just raiding the dress up box again?

It looked very disrespectful and like cultural appropriation, but I don't know enough about what is expected of visitors.

My thoughts also. But do you remember Denis Thatcher looking equally ridiculous?

I suspect it is penchant for dressing up tbh but I don’t know.

maddyone Fri 22-Apr-22 11:42:17

A citizen of the country put the turban on him volver so I assumed they wanted him to wear it. They also put a garland of flowers round his neck. I think it’s done to most or all important visitors.
