to feel sad that the Queen looks so frail.

Its popped up on my newsfeed that the Queen will be missing another royal engagement. There were also pictures of her looking even more frail still. Yes I know it's understandable at her age.
And it struck me that even though I'm a a bit of a republican, I am going to really miss her when she's no longer here. I get the 'feeling' that all is not as well as we're being led to believe.
The Queen has been a big constant in all our lives for so long, that I think you'd have to be a hard hearted person not to feel saddened when she's no longer here.
She's done such a good job.

It's one of the nicest photos I've ever seen of her. smile

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 22-Apr-22 14:28:33

It was nice to see the Queen looking happy and relaxed in her birthday photo wasn’t it?

Our next hereditary head of state has brothers and a sister. The following one will have (an) aunt and uncles. He, and the next one in line, and the next one after that, will also have cousins, nieces or nephews who, if they wish, could take advantage of the fact that they are part of the RF and so they will be able to stay in palaces rent free, if they like.

I don't know about some republicans not doing facts. But I do know that some others don’t do thinking about the future.

maddyone Fri 22-Apr-22 13:34:54

I do facts. That was a strange post from StoneofDestiny.

Anniebach Fri 22-Apr-22 13:27:15

Seems some republicans don’t do facts. I didn’t know the Queen had a brother , neither does she

Callistemon21 Fri 22-Apr-22 10:12:44

Anniebach

*StoneofDestiny * can you not post facts ?

Do tell, where do the Queen’s one niece and nephew live ? how
many servants do they have and how do you know they don’t
pay any staff they may have ?

The Queen has eight grandchildren, five do not live in palaces or any state owned properties.

Nor do they get taxpayers' money.

If we're going to discuss a monarchical system -v- republicanism then factual evidence would be helpful.

And of course that includes reporters & photographs who can make a fair old sum of money out of them.

Bridgeit Thu 21-Apr-22 20:46:59

Ohh I forgot what about the 1000s of folks that they employ , ok for them to loose their jobs is it?

Bridgeit Thu 21-Apr-22 20:34:27

How privileged are we to voice our opinions on computers, from the comfort of our homes with gas & electricity etc.
Who amongst us would give up what we have for those in the world who still live substandard lives.?
Let he who is with out sin cast the first stone, a quote from the Bible I believe, just a thought.

StoneofDestiny Thu 21-Apr-22 19:14:33

Nothing wrong with what Paddyann said.
I too think monarchy is an anachronism and should be abolished. I'd prefer an elected Head of State - that way we are not forced to support their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and supply them with jobs for life, support them with palaces, servants and our taxes. Best of all, we don't not have to keep them in post for life with their children guaranteed privileged existences.

The queen has had a long, privileged and pampered life - much better than the average citizen living in the UK and commonwealth countries. She could have given up the post at any time, she has a 73 year old son waiting and a 39 year old grandson also waiting to do the same job!
Neither have held a full time job in their life and yet can live in unbelievable splendour as 'aged trainees'. However much the royals try to imply they are in a 'Firm', they are not 'working' - the occasional garden party, dinner, appearance does not equal hard graft.
True, most people are not still 'working' in their 90's - that is because many of end up dead before that from a lifetime of real work, seriously hard work and worry about how to keep a roof over our head, how to get our children into a good school, how to get to the top of the NHS waiting list, how to heat our homes and how to stay safe in retirement while hoping our children do not end up unemployed - despite their many qualifications.

StoneofDestiny Thu 21-Apr-22 18:41:00

I don’t want to see the royal family dissolved. It’s our history ignore the Scots. It is OUR history and long May it continue

Wow - ignore the Scots ??.

I imagine there are many Republicans from England, Wales and NI - just as their are Royalists in Scotland.

I’m neither in my twilight years nor geriatric. Nor do I recall seeing any poster on here with that sort of mindset.

Anniebach Thu 21-Apr-22 11:17:15

I hope you will stay ValerieF there are lovely people on
GN, you will find much of interest

volver Thu 21-Apr-22 11:14:16

These tricky posters...do they tell other posters to ignore whole swathes of people they don't agree with, based just on their nationality?

henetha Thu 21-Apr-22 11:10:46

Don't leave, ValerieF. Most people on GN are lovely. smile
Maybe just avoid certain threads, politics, monarchy, etc, where there are just a few tricky posters.

I thought there would be people in their twilight years
That's rather a nasty and cruel comment imo

Incidentally there are more gentle threads about gardening, knitting, cooking etc and quite a few about grandchildren. Perhaps they would suit more.

maddyone Wed 20-Apr-22 22:16:47

Even hospitals don’t call older people geriatric anymore. In hospitals it’s called elderly care. I’ve visited my mother in elderly care but there was no one even remotely my age in there. They really were elderly. Lots of Gransnetters are in their 50s and 60s, and some are in their 40s. Of course others are in their 80s/90s but Gransnet isn’t full of geriatrics.

volver Wed 20-Apr-22 20:48:51

Perhaps you would get a better response on GN if you didn't tell others to ignore whole nationalities and then call us geriatrics. Cruel? Nasty? Mean?

Serendipity22 Wed 20-Apr-22 20:26:48

ValerieF we're not all like that, don't leave.......
