I am confused........

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???

No humbug here either.
But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat, are celebrating the life of a woman who owns a million pound hat, a £25 million pound chair and 30 Palaces and a £16 billion jewel collection.

Bread and circuses come to mind.

Abso-blooming-lutely,,, and I am being as polite as I can.

The BBC are not even showing the 'celebrations' the parades etc... and yet we had a full day coverage of Diana's funeral? What is the BBC doing? they can pay Zoe Ball £1.13 million!! a year and not put the celebrations on TV for the majority of people who can't get there and are royalists ... I am not a royalist but this is insulting to the majority that are.

I haven't read all the thread, my blood pressure won't let me!

I totally agree. They have chosen the day and month of the coronation 69 years ago. And as you say she took on the responsibility when her father died on 6 feb . And they keep saying it is 70 years since she was crowned.just irritating do they think we can’t count?

i like the queen, but in principal not a royalist. They are the biggest dole dodgers with property/ land everwhere. we have all been and continue to be duped.

From where I sit it looks like an excuse for a dress-up party. They are always fun.

I wonder how much the jubilee will cost the tax payer? Care to hazard a guess anyone?

No equality anywhere in the world

Ach, we'll just give up then.

I live in one of the most deprived areas of London, and looking at the queues of shoppers with their trollies piled high with food and booze, I don't see much belt-tightening here. We are having a very low-key family Jubilee celebration in the garden tomorrow. No bah humbug here.

Your comment - Sorry love is just so condescending ?

Aye.

And telling us to give up on equality is not?

I see that the usual suspects are out and about on a thread which mentions the Platinum Jubilee...
No point in offering an opinion here, there's no true sense of debate.

As this appeared right after my posts I'll assume you mean me. If you want to debate things, this is where to do it.

If you want to chat about how lovely everything is, there's the "enjoying the Jubilee" thread, which republicans et al seem to be avoiding so you can all have a lovely time there. Because we have manners, unlike the rampant royalists who will brook no disagreement with their opinions.

There will never be equality , look around the world at the poverty & corruption .
Equality & fairness does not exist . Never has , it never will
Doesn’t make a scrap of difference if it is Communist ,socialist
or anything in between … we can only help where we can & support those who endeavour to make a difference when & where they can.

Sorry love, you can give up on equality of opportunity if you like but some of us think it's something worth standing up for.

I'm assuming that all those who describe themselves as republicans would celebrate the presidency of a certain Mr Johnson.
An apolitical sovereign has been a very stable influence over the years of political turmoil in this country.

How many times?

If this is the standard of debate among monarchists, bring on a republic, pdq.

Whisper...

Do you think we could make this a "down with jubilees" thread without somebody coming along to tell us how miserable and ungrateful we are?

No,
How you can fail to be impressed watching the Trooping of the Colour is beyond me.
And, if people want to enjoy the celebrations, let them, without being the fly in the ointment.

Why do you think I'm not impressed by Trooping the Colour?

If people want to enjoy the celebrations, let them.

Perhaps those enjoying the celebrations can stop slagging off those who dont?

Franbern Why are you confused? Would you have preferred a BH in February?

HRH has an official birthday too. Is that also confusing? wink

Of course it is.

Who needs two birthdays?

Longest reigning current monarch but, at the moment she is only third longest in history. She will be second longest in under a fortnight when her reign becomes longer than that of the late King Bhumibol of Thailand (1946-2016).

The longest reigning monarch anywhere, any time is King Louis IV of France, 1643-1715, who reigned for 72 years and three months.

Our Queen has to live just under two more years to be the longest serving monarch ever, I hope she does! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest-reigning_monarchs

i am not a royalist but I can't see the problem with the celebrations. As far as i know she has worked well past what many would call retirement age. She has never been on strike nor has she had maternity leave etc. She has had to make small talk with some horrible people and attend functions that would make my brain curl. Yet always with a smile. The 4 kids have caused problems and then there is the turmoils of some of the grandkids. Surely you can see the celebration of the woman that was not born to her role but has always done it. I am told she is the longest reigning monarch in the world . So surely even a republican can see the reason for celebrations ?

Gwenisgreat1 Thu 02-Jun-22 13:46:22

I am a royalist and love the pomp and ceremony that goes with the Royal Family. I would have loved a street party, but apparently there isn't going to be one - Boo-hoo!

Bridgeit Thu 02-Jun-22 13:45:48

Lovely post Hilz,
Hope you too have a good weekend ???

hilz Thu 02-Jun-22 13:42:13

We won't be going to any large celebrations, still concerned about mixing but I think its fantastic that a 96 year old woman can command such attention. The revenue earnt by businesses after leaner times is to be applauded. I love the pagentry the pomp and the ceremony and have huge respect for the Queen and her long reign. My grandaughter has no interest at all and is looking forward to just enjoying the bank holiday. Each to their own but what ever our thoughts or opinions history is being made and once this reign is over we may never ever have a Monarch who reigns this long and thats a mind blowing fact.
Have a lovely bank holiday everyone.x

sazz1 Thu 02-Jun-22 13:39:03

I'm definitely a republican but the parades can stay as they are part of our history. The sooner we get rid of the royal family the better. Why should anyone bow and curtsey to anyone else? Or pay tax to support them? Benefit scroungers all of them and not a great example to the people. Just look at Andrew, Charles and Camilla for a start. And what kind of mother pays to keep their son out of court on underage sex charges? He was also a great friend to Jimmy Saville too. No respect for the queen anymore after that.

Bridgeit Thu 02-Jun-22 13:27:58

I must have missed comments about being ‘ grateful’
Can you enlighten me please .

Bankhurst Thu 02-Jun-22 13:19:29

What are we supposed to be grateful for?

Pantglas2 Thu 02-Jun-22 13:17:28

It must be galling beyond belief to the antis to see the celebrating crowds in London today, real craw sticking stuff - fair cheers the hearts of those of us enjoying it all ??

Never mind, it’ll be all done and dusted by Sunday evening- as you were folks!
