I am confused........

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???

This year is the 70th anniversary anniversary of her accession. There was a service to mark this in February when the 'Jubilee year' began. I believe this weekend was chosen for a Jubilee bank holiday instead of the usual late May one, as it's rather better to have a bank holiday in the summer than early Feb.

Whisper...

Do you think we could make this a "down with jubilees" thread without somebody coming along to tell us how miserable and ungrateful we are?

Parsley3 Tue 31-May-22 12:54:48

Psst.... no chance.

Aveline Tue 31-May-22 12:55:18

My God you're a 'miserable ungrateful' bunch!
Hard lines volver.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 31-May-22 12:56:25

I don’t mind jubilees, just all the bloody mentions of it everywhere and the insistence that we can’t enjoy ourselves unless we go to the communal p*ss up. ?

Namsnanny Tue 31-May-22 13:00:08

You're not asking people to not comment are you volver?

Namsnanny Tue 31-May-22 13:03:49

?

Saggi Tue 31-May-22 13:04:10

Republican here. So Bah-humbug to all the piss ups! Stay home and donate to a favourite charity instead.

No, of course not. Just hoped for some peace and quiet and an escape from the fun police, that's all.

Its like being at Butlins in the sixties, isn't it?. Not that I ever went.

?Hi di Hi!! ? Trifle in the canteen at 10am!!

My understanding was that as the actual accession was the date her father died, that she wanted to spend the day quietly remembering her father. When her mother was alive, she would spend the day with her. So all Jubilees have been in the Summer when the weather is hopefully better and people can meet outside. But we are still celebrating the 70 years she has been Queen, not 70 years from the coronation.

There will never be another one, and when our road had a socially distanced party for VE day, we promised ourselves a proper party when the opportunity arose, so no humbug in our road!

Franbern Tue 31-May-22 13:18:54

No humbug here either.
But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat, are celebrating the life of a woman who owns a million pound hat, a £25 million pound chair and 30 Palaces and a £16 billion jewel collection.

Bread and circuses come to mind.

I’m not really sure what I should be doing and when I should be doing it.

I do like the Queen in the sense that she’s so iconic.
It all seems very sad to me, like we are saying goodbye to her.
And it’s nothing like the Silver Jubilee. It all belongs in the past.

On a lighter note; I do like some of the memorabilia.
I’ve got some cracking Jubilant mice.
I might post a photo of them later.

Hard to conceive that A hat can cost that amount of money….. who are the makers I wonder ? Are they just for The Queen ? if not it would be soo interesting to know who else uses the services of this company.

I couldn't care less what the event is, any excuse for apublic celebration goes down well with me. The bunting is up, not plastic, but made for the Golden Jubilee and used several times since. I have looked up the original recipe for Coronation chicken and will take it to the Picnic on the Green our village is having on Sunday. I will also be up on the hill for the lighting of the beacon on thursday (i think)

Wh cares the reason, it will just be community fun in a big and friendly village

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 14:21:12

Brigeit I think that this is the hat in question

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 14:24:14

That sounds absolutely lovely M0nica
I wish that I lived in a community such as yours
It’s at times like this I miss working at school

StarDreamer I like the purple locomotive!

Bridgeit Tue 31-May-22 14:42:58

Ohh one would need a neck-brace & and a voice -over saying something like- stand away from the Crown ?

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 31-May-22 15:41:05

I feel for the Companies who are struggling having to pay their staff to have an extra ‘Bank Holiday’ day or double time if they are working.
Which of course will come back on us as extra costs.

But I suppose it will be her last Hurrah.
I think she will be in the background from now and C&C will do most of her Public duties, helped by William and Kate.

AGAA4 Tue 31-May-22 15:53:24

I will be celebrating a very special birthday over the jubilee weekend. My GS will be 3.
No jubilee celebrations for us though but hope everyone who is partying has a good time.

toscalily Tue 31-May-22 15:53:24

I think the queen has done her duty as she saw fit and I do admire her for that and for the 70 years. For many, individuals and communities this may be the first time they have come together since before lockdown and I think that if people want to celebrate then good for them. My granddaughters had a Jubilee day at school last week, more like a sports/fun day, fortunately the rain stayed away and from the photo's & what they have told me they enjoyed themselves and will probably have fond memories of the day in later years. To be honest I am surprised at all the snide remarks made by some of the grans on here, republican or royalist some of you seem to have lost your sense of enjoyment & fun and it would seem would like to deny others too.

StarDreamer Tue 31-May-22 16:05:31

StarDreamer I like the purple locomotive!

It is a temporary repainting, renumbering and renaming of Taw Valley.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_West_Country_class_21C127_Taw_Valley

So the celebration is having both a full-size steam locomotive and an edition of models of it.
