I am confused........

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???

Thank you.

There will never be equality , look around the world at the poverty & corruption .
Equality & fairness does not exist . Never has , it never will
Doesn’t make a scrap of difference if it is Communist ,socialist
or anything in between … we can only help where we can & support those who endeavour to make a difference when & where they can.

I am preparing to duck but I admire the Queen, I think she's done a great job - there are members of her family I think are a waste of space but I'm proud of her. Having said that, we won't be celebrating the jubilee or attending anything...more time in the garden for me, OH will be glued to sport on TV and my FinL will be reading...

I think the monarchy is outdated but have just watched the Queen appear on the balcony with the Duke of Kent. Felt a bit sad to see how old he looks now and wondered if he was in good health.
I wont be flag waving or going to any jubilee events. The comment about the frenzy of worship or that's my interpretation, being like Butlins in the 60s made me smile. Especially trifle served in the canteen st 10 am. Felt like we have gone back in time. Mixed feelings, wish her all the best but I feel it perpetuates the class system so beloved by all in this country but harms do many including those who love it.

Secretsquirrel1 Thu 02-Jun-22 12:29:28

I like the Queen and the monarchy for the tradition but am fine with other UK citizens who aren’t fans.
My sister has lived abroad in a republic for 30 odd years and when she off slags the Queen and goes on about the fact it should be a republic, it pisses me off a bit for some reason lol ?

“Committed republicans”

angry

Long live the queen.

Fae1 Thu 02-Jun-22 12:00:05

Agreed 100%!

Aepgirl Thu 02-Jun-22 11:54:49

Well said, toscalily. As I posted the other day - what a grumpy lot some of the GNs are.

kevincharley Thu 02-Jun-22 11:52:52

Franbern Why are you confused? Would you have preferred a BH in February?

HRH has an official birthday too. Is that also confusing? wink

kevincharley Thu 02-Jun-22 11:47:08

Whisper...

Do you think we could make this a "down with jubilees" thread without somebody coming along to tell us how miserable and ungrateful we are?

No,
How you can fail to be impressed watching the Trooping of the Colour is beyond me.
And, if people want to enjoy the celebrations, let them, without being the fly in the ointment.

Nanny27 Thu 02-Jun-22 11:44:28

I'm assuming that all those who describe themselves as republicans would celebrate the presidency of a certain Mr Johnson.
An apolitical sovereign has been a very stable influence over the years of political turmoil in this country.

Grantanow Thu 02-Jun-22 11:40:04

Bah humbug! I think she does her duty as she sees it and I've nothing against her personally but not sure about 70 years + on the public purse given her wealth. I'm not a republican - I would worry about replacing her by some second rate, superannuated politician or some celeb from the media, sport or entertainment. And it could have been Mrs Thatcher or (in another world) Mr Corbyn.

Nannina Thu 02-Jun-22 11:39:48

I won’t be celebrating the long life of a very privileged lady. Instead I shall, as I do most days, have a cup of afternoon tea with a neighbour the same age. She had a difficult life and worked very hard but has been left house bound without adequate social care. No chauffeur driven golf buggy or abundant flunkies for her

Coco51 Thu 02-Jun-22 11:31:45

The coronation

Gardner Thu 02-Jun-22 11:28:38

I would rather have a head of state who would probably prefer to do something else with their life ,than a politician who wants the job.
Our community came together during lockdown and this our
celebration that we promised ourselves during the dark days of Covid.

do wonder how many on here making their trifle and putting out the bunting etc. were amongst those howling for her blood back at the time of the death of Diane!!!!
Diana was her forename.

Yes, I agree, Maggiemaybe, a very odd thing to say indeed.

HM did the right thing at the time as a loving grandmother, trying to protect those poor boys from the media .
It was Blair who called her "The People's Princess" (!) and demanded we all share a piece of those poor boys in their grief. It was mawkish and horrendous.
Disgraceful.

What an odd thing to wonder. Perhaps you could take a headcount.

I’ll start. So far I’ve got one flag on a stick stuck in a plant pot in my front yard, and I might yet have a go at that trifle if I can find some unseasonal mixed peel, but I have never in my life howled for anyone’s blood. Or for anything else, for that matter.

What’s the AIBU, by the way?

Just looked up the definition of service. It is;

the action of helping or doing work for someone

No 0ne has yet listed even one thing that can be called Service to the Country - just vague ideas that having come quite young to the throne and been long lived and having the title 'Queen' must equal service!!!!

Thank you for agreeing with me Franbern. The service of the Queen can barely be called service. She is well paid for what she does, on top of her huge inherited wealth.
I would like a truly democratic country, with no royal family and no second house based on inheritance and nepotism. A truly modern and democratic state.
The royals could continue to live well on their personal wealth but would no longer be paid by the rest of us.

maddyone Wed 01-Jun-22 16:53:29

Sorry but I am not mixed up about service. I know exactly what service is. The Queen has been well paid for her service, unlike others. My daughter is also a doctor, and having children who are doctors has nothing to do with my opinion.

Aveline Wed 01-Jun-22 16:49:56

Does only your definition of 'service' count? There are others. ?

Good points Lovetopaint037

Go on let’s take away the colour and anything relating to what few other countries have and envy. Let’s have a President who can command obedience. Let’s get rid of Parliament. Let’s get rid of tradition. Let’s get rid of the interest and fun associated with a Royal family. We don’t want the Royal family to tour the world promoting what little we have left to be proud of. I with you in a 1984 dystopian world. Grey and miserable.
