I am confused........

Okay, I will not be taking part in any celebrations this coming week. Me and my whole family are firm and committed republicans.

However, I am still confused as exactly what we are supposed to be celebrating

The queen became such at the beginning of February 1952 - upon the death of her father. The Coronation was held 18 months later on 2nd June 1953. So......this coming weekend is five months too late for the first and a year short for the second.

what am I missing???

?
Nice idea, Nannarose

Nannarose Tue 31-May-22 17:46:06

Many communities are trying to make a nice day for people who have little to spare. Our local foodbank has picnic parcels to take to a local free open air concert.
I too am a republican, and wish that we did this all differently. But after the last 2 years, and the current state, I'm for a community celebration.

Whatever, whatever, each to their own. Celebrate or don't celebrate, to me it makes nooooo difference whatsoever.

I for 1 want to do something, whatever that something is I couldn't care less, I'm not bothered if I wave my flag about or if I throw trifle down my throat, i don't have to go the full shebang just as long as I do something....

smile

Yes, agreed.

I've not called anyone names at all.

In fact, I said:

IT'S NOT COMPULSORY

I have an Off button and a Mute button on my TV and I use them. Often.
I can also avoid threads on GN if I want to.

I am not into it but it will be the last royal jubilee for many years, Charles probably will not reign long enough for a silver Jubilee and not many on here will be around for Williams silver jubilee.

And this has become the latest saying to try to make others feel guilty if they can afford to heat and eat or want to enjoy themselves in any way at all.

I don't think anyone is trying to make others feel guilty about a sausage roll and a corgi-cake.

For me its the breathless hero-worship of someone who has been head of state for 70 years. 70 years! Some think that's an achievement but I think its unhealthy. She is the past, we're not the same country we were in 1952. And she doesn't represent the country that I think we should be. Nobody who has done the same "job" for 70 years represents the country any more.

Then we have all the extended family, Duke this and Earl that - we're not medieval Ruritania sad And the hat with its own Rolls Royce. ??‍♀️

The country is in the worst state it’s been for decades. But right now, we are being told we have to celebrate a very well off woman who hasn't done a hard day’s work in her life in order to earn enough to pay the rent. She hasn't been down the mine, she hasn't done a shift in Tesco's, she hasn't saved anyone's life in the operating theatre. She's had an easy life. Nothing wrong with that, but those who say how hard she works are, IMO, opinion, misled. The lady on the till at Lidl today told me how much she admires her, because of all the things she's done for this country. I didn't to ask her to list those things. ?

So, enjoy your trifle by all means. But don't think we all want to celebrate someone embodying a governance system we don't approve of, based on patronage and plutocracy. And I just wish people would stop calling us names…

Daisymae Tue 31-May-22 16:46:41

Just go with it. It'll soon be over???!

You mean they are ours???!!!?

Sell them. Right now. Sell them.

Yes, you can borrow it for your Jubilee party!! ?
?

Ooh, sorry, I forgot

Farzanah Tue 31-May-22 16:29:22

Yes volver we could definitely have a party then ?

Callistemon21 Tue 31-May-22 16:29:12

But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat

And this has become the latest saying to try to make others feel guilty if they can afford to heat and eat or want to enjoy themselves in any way at all.

I don't mean that to sound harsh.
I give to charity and I would change things if I could but I can't at the moment!

However, I am fed up of being beaten about the head by that particular mantra because I didn't cause that; I will try to change things when the opportunity arises and I'm not going to feel guilty if I want to chat with my neighbours and enjoy eating a sandwich and a sausage roll with them.

I expect the wrath of Gransnt to fall on my head now.

Franbern

No humbug here either.
But....do wonder at this occasion, when people who are having to choose whether to eat or heat, are celebrating the life of a woman who owns a million pound hat, a £25 million pound chair and 30 Palaces and a £16 billion jewel collection.

Bread and circuses come to mind.

She doesn't actually own any of those things, Franbern

StarDreamer I like the purple locomotive!

It is a temporary repainting, renumbering and renaming of Taw Valley.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_West_Country_class_21C127_Taw_Valley

So the celebration is having both a full-size steam locomotive and an edition of models of it.

I think the queen has done her duty as she saw fit and I do admire her for that and for the 70 years. For many, individuals and communities this may be the first time they have come together since before lockdown and I think that if people want to celebrate then good for them. My granddaughters had a Jubilee day at school last week, more like a sports/fun day, fortunately the rain stayed away and from the photo's & what they have told me they enjoyed themselves and will probably have fond memories of the day in later years. To be honest I am surprised at all the snide remarks made by some of the grans on here, republican or royalist some of you seem to have lost your sense of enjoyment & fun and it would seem would like to deny others too.

AGAA4 Tue 31-May-22 15:53:24

I will be celebrating a very special birthday over the jubilee weekend. My GS will be 3.
No jubilee celebrations for us though but hope everyone who is partying has a good time.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 31-May-22 15:41:05

I feel for the Companies who are struggling having to pay their staff to have an extra ‘Bank Holiday’ day or double time if they are working.
Which of course will come back on us as extra costs.

But I suppose it will be her last Hurrah.
I think she will be in the background from now and C&C will do most of her Public duties, helped by William and Kate.

Bridgeit Tue 31-May-22 14:42:58

Ohh one would need a neck-brace & and a voice -over saying something like- stand away from the Crown ?

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 14:24:14

That sounds absolutely lovely M0nica
I wish that I lived in a community such as yours
It’s at times like this I miss working at school

StarDreamer I like the purple locomotive!

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 14:21:12

Brigeit I think that this is the hat in question

M0nica Tue 31-May-22 14:19:10

I couldn't care less what the event is, any excuse for apublic celebration goes down well with me. The bunting is up, not plastic, but made for the Golden Jubilee and used several times since. I have looked up the original recipe for Coronation chicken and will take it to the Picnic on the Green our village is having on Sunday. I will also be up on the hill for the lighting of the beacon on thursday (i think)

Wh cares the reason, it will just be community fun in a big and friendly village

Hard to conceive that A hat can cost that amount of money….. who are the makers I wonder ? Are they just for The Queen ? if not it would be soo interesting to know who else uses the services of this company.

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 13:50:33

And YANBU

FannyCornforth Tue 31-May-22 13:48:29

I’m not really sure what I should be doing and when I should be doing it.

I do like the Queen in the sense that she’s so iconic.
It all seems very sad to me, like we are saying goodbye to her.
And it’s nothing like the Silver Jubilee. It all belongs in the past.

On a lighter note; I do like some of the memorabilia.
I’ve got some cracking Jubilant mice.
I might post a photo of them later.
